I didn't ask for good X songs, I said what makes him good. If I like a track by an artist no matter who it is, I can admit it unlike alot of people who just d!ckride certain artists and hate others. Musically, DMX CAN make good music, but it's not something that I would like to listen to. And I was like 16 when DMX came out, so it's not an 'era' thing.
For me.. what makes X good is the subtleties in his music. Even on a song like Get At Me Dog you can get a gist of what he is... and that's a troubled dude. The opening line.. " what must I go through to show you sh*t is real? " speaks volumes to me. It's almost like he's asking " how far do I have to take it to prove my point? " Then later on his the song he says " I got a lot of dreams, but I'm not really chasing mine. " He sounds hopeless as hell.
He also has a way with phrases. One that always stuck out to me was how he took the old saying " It's better to give than receive ", but he flipped it and made it fit for robbery. " I'm gon' get you either way so it's better to live. Let me get what's in your sock 'cause it's better to give... than receive.. " Another one I always liked was " Respect is not expected, but it's given 'cause it's real.. " It's simple yet effective. One of his strong points (in my opinion) is how conservative he is with his words and phrasing.
X was agressive and brash, but he was also very human at the same time. But it's subtle.. most people (like you said) get caught up in his voice and energy and they miss the undertones. That bi-polar, schizophrenic way of thinking is what makes X special to me. I'm not trying to convert you into a DMX fan or anything... just saying why I like him. Peace.
