There's nothing to trade, NY Media hype is a disease
Idiot... Trading for him won't be the only to get him

“Extend and trade and sign and trade are both available,” says one prominent player agent, “then it should help Chris Paul, Deron Williams and Dwight Howard all be able to have leverage to move teams this year if they so choose.”

Also a way that a trade can happen (I don't see it happening but can if a team is in love with getting that contract) is a 3 team trade involving Chauncey Billups contracts which indeed is something a lot of teams want. We get talent/picks from the 3rd team to send to Hornets. Anything is possible in the trade market. But for the Knicks, I doubt they do a trade.

Any deal for Paul would likely include incumbent point guard Chauncey Billups, whose $14.2 million option was picked up by the Knicks in late April. Billups’ expiring contract is an a.sset that many teams will covet which makes him a prime candidate to be traded before the deadline.

knicks dont have anything to trade. i doubt the hornets are gonna go crazy over a deal centered around a half-season of chauncey billups, and if they're lucky, an average player like landry fields. knicks would probably have better luck in free agency

The countdown to Chris Paul has begun.

The tentative agreement between NBA owners and players paves the way for Paul, the Hornets All-Star point guard, to potentially join the Knicks via a sign-and-trade, the same way his good friend Carmelo Anthony joined the Knicks nine months ago.

“Extend and trade and sign and trade are both available,” says one prominent player agent, “then it should help Chris Paul, Deron Williams and Dwight Howard all be able to have leverage to move teams this year if they so choose.”

The labor agreement, that still must be ratified by the players, does not include the so-called “Melo Rule” which would have prohibited players from signing Bird rights extensions with teams that acquired them via trade after July 1st and in advance of their final season under contract.

For example, if the rule had been in place last season, Anthony would not have been allowed to sign a Bird rights extension with the Knicks upon being traded by the Denver Nuggets.

During a personal appearance last month in Manhattan, Anthony laughed when he heard about the proposed “Melo Rule.”

“I’m just glad I can be part of something,” Anthony said. “When I’m dead and gone, the Melo Rule will still be here. I’m just excited that they named a rule after me.”

Instead, the Melo Rule is dead and gone which was one of the concessions by owners. The elimination of the Melo Rule is beneficial to the Knicks who have targeted Paul for nearly two years. It was at Carmelo Anthony’s wedding in July 2010 when Paul made a toast that he, Anthony and Amar’e Stoudemire would “form our own Big 3” in New York. That was seven months prior to Anthony forcing his way out of Denver and onto the Knicks roster.

Coincidentally, it was LeBron James, fresh off of leaving Cleveland in order to join Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in Miami who put the idea in Paul’s head. James, who is also close to the young point guard, told Paul that his best chance to compete for an NBA title would be to partner with Anthony and Stoudemire.

As strange as it may seem, LeBron is turning out to be a strong ally for the Knicks. He was responsible for picking the teams for the South Florida All-Star Classic last month, and as fate would have it, he made sure that Paul, Anthony and Stoudemire were on the same roster.

“Do you think Knick fans liked that” Anthony said at the time. “I’m sure they did. I liked it.”

When the NBA schedule was released over the summer, the Knicks were slated to play host to the Boston Celtics at noon on Christmas Day. That match-up will likely remain on the schedule which would make the Knicks-Celtics the first game of the 2010-11 NBA season. NBA Commissioner David Stern said early Saturday that three games will be played Christmas Day.

The possibility of Paul being on the roster by Dec. 25th is remote. If the Hornets decide to trade Paul — who will be a free agent in July — during the season, that would likely happen closer to the trading deadline. It is unclear if the league, which intends to play a 66-game season, will move the trading deadline back a week or two.

Any deal for Paul would likely include incumbent point guard Chauncey Billups, whose $14.2 million option was picked up by the Knicks in late April. Billups’ expiring contract is an a.sset that many teams will covet which makes him a prime candidate to be traded before the deadline.

Between now and Dec. 9, the start of training camp and free agency, acting general manager Glen Grunwald has several roster decisions to make. Anthony Carter, Jared Jeffries, Roger Mason, Shawne Williams and Shelden Williams are all free agents and it is likely that Jeffries and Shawne Williams will return.

On the open market, former Knick Jamal Crawford is available, but he would cost the Knicks too much. The same is true of Memphis center Marc Gasol, who is a restricted free agent. Two players that Mike D’Antoni coached in Phoenix, Kurt Thomas and Grant Hill, are more likely free-agent candidates.

It will be a hectic 28 days for the Knicks and fast-paced season, but the goal of acquiring Chris Paul is very much in the crosshairs. Good things come to those who wait. Or as Anthony tweeted on Saturday: “SHOWTIME!!!!”

Everyone is saying how the Knicks don't have that trade bait but in reality they do if the players they have preform at a good level by the trade deadline.

Knicks can strike a deal with the Hornets if Fields becomes the Fields of before the Melo trade. Also if Iman Shumpert, and Toney Douglas play at a high level. Add in Billups expring contract that many teams want, which the Hornets can turn around and trade off for picks or young talent.

A trade of
Iman
Toney
Billups
Fields
Draft Picks

For
Paul

This trade can work but all depends on how well those 3 certain players preform early this season. Some of you people are quick to shut down the Knicks talent without having a in-depth look at the players. Getting Paul is hard but it won't cost a team a lot of talent considering all the talk of him wanting to become a Knick. Teams will shy away from him unless he signs a contract extension and I don't see him doing that....

Don't compare this to the Melo drama because in reality Paul has way more leverage now than Melo. The reason why is because Melo was forced to sign a extension in season because of the pending CBA. While now Paul knows all the information and can wait till the FA to get the same contract with no worries about the CBA. He can choose the team he wants with no CBA problems over his head.

yall are missin the point..billups has a huge contract that is also expiring this season, along with cp3 who is gonna be a free agent..if a team does pick up billups half way thru the season thats cap space they gonna free up for the following season

and only reason fields didnt look so good is because he is still a young player who got used to playing with danilo, chandler, felton etc. then things switched up reallll quick and he had to adjust to playin with 2, some say 3, superstars..he was all out of it for the 2nd half of the season and the playoffs the chemistry wasnt there

Knicks ain't going to have a 1st round pick until 2020
If we got CP3 and a future championship in the next 3 years, I would GLADY take that trade-off. I'm sure my other fellow Knick fans would take that as well. We just went through the worst decade in Knicks history. Fukk a first round pick if we still contending for a 'chip.

It's NY baby, people will always want to come play in the Mecca!

On a side note, Im not missing Chandler, Dano, or Mozgov. I'd gladly take that trade again. Felton is a moot point because the Knicks have all along wanted CP3. To those saying we should go after D12 over CP3, I agree and disagree at the same time. Yes his defensive presence would change the Knicks (and boy does it need to be changed) but I'm concerned how he would fit offensively, especially with no solid PG (like Paul) to keep the Big 3 happy. Either way, I would gladly take either one and figure it out later. Someone made a great point earlier, Deron, CP3 and D12 have all the leverage now that the new CBA is in place. They know they still getting paid. I think all 3 are going to Free Agency. Welcome to Summer 2010 again. All they have to do is go through the motions for 6 months until July 1st, 2012 and not get a serious injury. $$$$$$$$

How can you tell if that is his ceiling? Every rookie hits a wall early on. That's why they are considered ROOKIES.

I've followed his game all year; i take pride in evaluating players process. I can't see him improving his skill set anymore because its limited. He is what he is a smart role player.

I have to disagree with you there. I see him has a Shane Battier type player more like ur saying "smart role player" but the difference with him is his athletic ability. He can run the floor and find open spaces for put backs. A lil bit too early to judge a rookie I must say, give it till next year at least to give ur final report.

There is no reason the Hornets have to deal Paul to New York for scraps. Landry Fields is a solid role player, but there is a guy like him available almost every year. Paul is a once in a generation PG. Come on.

Plus the Hornets are still looking for a buyer. Can't imagine buying a franchise then immediately dumping your best a.sset. It's bad business.

Yeah and let him go without getting at least picks or talent? The Hornets know they are in a corner here with him most likely leaving. I'm not saying he's going to New York but I'm saying every media outlet is pointing towards him leaving.
