Breaking (Rumor): Adobe Calling It Quits On Flash For Android And All Other Mobile Platforms

According to ZDNet, Adobe is throwing in the towel on Flash for all mobile platforms (Android included), and will encourage developers to use AIR and HTML5 in the future as alternatives to the company's iconic web plugin. This follows hot on the heels of news that Adobe is cutting 750 jobs at its North American and European arms. The announcement regarding Flash is expected to come at a financial analyst meeting tomorrow.
Flash for Android has a storied history, and often served as the cornerstone for arguments that only Android allows mobile users to experience the "full" web on their smartphone and tablet devices. While Adobe will continue providing security updates to the Flash for Android platform, its development as a product will effectively end.
The lackluster performance of flash in mobile (and, let's face it, any) applications and the increasing hype around HTML5, as well as Adobe's financial circumstances, are likely to blame.
The supposed announcement was leaked to ZDNet, below:
Our future work with Flash on mobile devices will be focused on enabling Flash developers to package native apps with Adobe AIR for all the major app stores. We will no longer adapt Flash Player for mobile devices to new browser, OS version or device configurations. Some of our source code licensees may opt to continue working on and releasing their own implementations. We will continue to support the current Android and PlayBook configurations with critical bug fixes and security updates.
whoa....

I saw that picture and it had me Android and RIM won't be hurt because they both support HTML5, however it's going to take a lot of these sites some time to reencode all of their videos, animations, games, etc to HTML5. It was only a matter of time before this transition happened. It's still jarring just because of how sudden this went down.

A lightweight, faster open source standard that runs natively through the browser than through a plugin.

Everything mobile. I'm sure XDA would work on a port, but at this point content providers will be making a mass exodus from Flash to HTML5 video.

Let's stay on topic though I know you have a thing against Jobs and Apple, but that has nothing to do with Adobe ending the development (and support I a.ssume) of it's mobile plugin.

Adobe is about to release Adobe Edge which is a programming HTML 5 tool that is going to be as powerful as their Flash tools. People who creates flash website will tell you its much easier to code for flash than HTML 5 at this moment. And guess what Adobe Edge is close to full release and Adobe is about to announce to k!ll off flash mobile.

The reason jobs attacked adobe over flash because he wants adobe to create a powerful HTML 5 programming tool that is equal to their flash animation tool.
