Red Sox exercised a $6 million club option on shortstop Marco Scutaro for next season.
They did so on his 35th birthday. The move seemed like a no-brainer, especially when considering that the buy-out was $1.5 million. Scutaro caught fire down the stretch and finished with a solid .299/.358/.423 line in 445 plate appearances, arguably his best offensive season. He also provides above-average shortstop defense. Prospect Jose Iglesias is the shortstop of the future in Boston but Scutaro will keep the position warm for one more season.

Makes sense when you consider Iglesias is coming up. I despise Scutaro, but that was a good move instead of paying another 4-10 Mil more for a rental.

K-Rod a free agent after option declined

Francisco Rodriguez's $17.5 million mutual option has been declined, and the Milwaukee Brewers reliever was among 148 players who become free agents Sunday.

K-Rod's deal was reworked when he was traded from the New York Mets during the All-Star break, changing it from an option that would have become guaranteed had he finished 55 games. Rodriguez, used as a setup man by the Brewers, gets a $4 million buyout, up from the original $3.5 million.

In addition, the Brewers declined a $6 million club option on shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt, who gets a $2 million buyout.

Others whose options were declined included Atlanta outfielder Nate McLouth; Colorado right-hander Aaron Cook; and the San Diego trio of right-handers Aaron Harang and Chad Qualls, and outfielder Brad Hawpe.

I just hope Iglesias is a bust. Remember Hanley sucked in the minors, which is what Iglesias is doing right now. That team has been cursed as SS since Nomar

The Indians acquired Derek Lowe from the Braves, tweets John Kreger. The Braves will pay all but $5MM of Lowe's $15MM salary, tweets ESPN's Buster Olney. Olney says the Braves will receive a second-line player in return.

Lowe, 38, posted a 5.05 ERA, 6.6 K/9, 3.4 BB/9, 0.67 HR/9, and 59% groundball rate in 187 innings this year for Atlanta. Lowe's Braves career ended on a sour note, as his 8.75 September ERA contributed to their collapse. Still, his groundball rate ranked second in all of baseball. Lowe signed a four-year, $60MM deal with the Braves in January of 2009.

With Lowe, Justin Masterson, and Fausto Carmona, the Indians' rotation now has three of the top seven in 2011 groundball rate. Ubaldo Jimenez and Josh Tomlin are also penciled in, with Carlos Carrasco down for Tommy John surgery.

For the Braves, the benefit is $5MM in much-needed salary relief for a pitcher otherwise projected for middle relief on their 2012 club.

Jimenez is finished. Indians traded for the 15-1 guy at the 2010 allstar break. Dude will never be the same again. As for Lowe, atleast he can eat innings for them. Don't forget garbage a.ss Fausto Carmona.

If the Dodgers don't get an extension done with Matt Kemp before ST, people will be lining up to try and pry him away from LA.

Better get your #1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 prospects ready to pack their bags, though (and that might not even be enough).
Only place Kemp is going in 2012 is to the Free Agent market. Even if someone was to trade for him, no way he would sign an extension without going to the market, especially with the Yankees and Red Sox needing an OF/RF. He would have to have the dumbest agent ever to let that happen or get offered an ungodly amount of money by the team trading for him.

For Mets fans :

AdamRubinESPN: Alderson still projected a $100 million to $110 million payroll in 2012, but said you start lower and get there during year.

AdamRubinESPN: If you understand that Santana, Wright, Bay, d!ckey & Pelfrey get about $65 million, you do math and tell me if Jose Reyes is coming back.

The Yankees considered courting Carlos Beltran as a free agent until they learned that his agent Scott Boras was looking for a three-year deal, according to a source.

The development led New York to pick up the 2012 option on the contract of Nick Swisher. The option is worth $10.25 million.

Sounds like a bump in salary for each of the 4 years and the additional year at 25 milly in 2016. I wonder what the terms of the vesting option are. It could be a slam dunk depending on what it is. Contract probably looks like this:

2012 - 24 mil
2013 - 24 mil
2014 - 24 mil
2015 - 25 mil
2016 - 25 mil

That gives you 122 million. Makes him highest paid pitcher basically.

Cliff Lee has an option in 2016 worth 27.5 million (12.5 million buyout) so that is pretty much guaranteed. But CC's base contract is worth more than Lee's 5 yr 120 from last year.

3 years for Beltran is a pipe dream. He will be lucky to get two years. If he does manage to get the years, he won't get high dollars, that is for sure.
