2008, he played 157 games, hit 33 HR's and 90 RBI with 38 steals.

Dude is a beast when healthy. If he's actually 100% healthy, i'd take him. We'd have a real leadoff hitter.

RF-Sizemore
CF-Granderson
2B-Cano
3B-A-Rod
1B-Tex
SS-Jeter
DH-Montero
C-Martin
LF-Gardner

Swisher traded for a starter

That short porch could revive his career along with playing a small RF.
That's what I'm saying, let's take a flyer on Grady.

• has a combined batting average of .227 the last three seasons

• can no longer throw from even medium-deep center field

• is no longer a serious threat on the base paths, and

• has a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 227 to 87 … as a leadoff hitter.

Sizemore ^^ the last 3 years

We could gamble on him as a 4th outfielder and see if he has anything left. I think any team that signs him banking on starting 150+ games is foolish.

Updated: Giants more likely to spend on CF than SS

In a post to Twitter, Danny Knobler of CBS Sports says it sounds like the Giants are more likely to spend their few available dollars on a center fielder rather than a shortstop, such as free agents Jose Reyes or Jimmy Rollins

The Giants had a $98 million payroll in 2010 when they won a World Series. Last season, they spent $118 million and finished four games short of the Wild Card. Tim Lincecum, Pablo Sandoval and Jonathan Sanchez could end up earning close to $30 million next year in arbitration, thus pushing the team’s payroll close to $120 million before making any other acquisitions this winter.

Cubs fired manager Mike Quade.
Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times broke the news on Twitter, which was quickly confirmed by the team. Quade has one year remaining on his contract and a club option for 2013, but most expected the new Cubs' front office would make a change in the dugout. Many have already speculated that Ryne Sandberg could be his replacement, but team president Theo Epstein released a statement Wednesday saying that he wants someone who has coaching or managerial experience at the major league level. That would seem to rule Sandberg out as a candidate.

Joe Nathan‘s top priority is to pitch for a winning team next season, ‘preferably as the closer,’ reports ESPN 1500′s Jim Mackey, who says money will not be the driving force in Nathan’s decision.

The Nationals are closing in on a new contract with RHP Chien-Ming Wang

Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune says the Cubs could be interested in signing free-agent LHP Mark Buehrle, “if the price tag and years aren’t astronomical.”*Buehrle, a Type-B free agent, could also garner interest from the Nationals, writes Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post.

The Orioles claimed relief pitcher Darren O’Day off waivers from the Rangers.

“The Red Sox, Twins, Athletics, Cubs, Pirates, Cardinals, Rockies, Padres, and Giants could explore the market for right fielders this year,” according to MLB Trade Rumors.

The Marlins will raise their payroll to at least $85 milliom in 2012, writes Joe Capozzi of the Palm Beach Post, which, according to MLB Trade Rumors, could mean they’ll have $20 million to spend in acquisitions

This afternoon, Peter Gammons was a guest of Mike Francesa on WFAN and said he believes there is a strong possibility the Mets will look to trade David Wright this winter regardless of whether or not they retain Jose Reyes

In addition, Gammons said:

It’s good for the Mets that the Dodgers aren’t in the mix for Reyes, since he’d be the kind of a player a new owner would likely want to sign.

Eventually, he thinks Reyes will re-sign with the Mets.

Reyes could sign by the Winter Meetings in early December, whereas Prince Fielder and Albert Pujols might not sign until mid-December.

If the Mets can’t re-sign Reyes, they might think they need a three- to four-year rebuilding phase and so Wright could be available.

Texas is “an early favorite” to sign Prince Fielder.

Joey Votto could possible be a trade candidate if another team offers enough pitching.

Andre Ethier could emerge as a trade candidate as well.

According to MLB.com's Mark Bowman, the Braves are taking trade offers for Jair Jurrjens and Martin Prado.

Atlanta will be looking to add power and open up salary for a free agent shortstop through the moves. The Royals have already expressed interest in obtaining Jurrjens, who registered a 2.96 ERA in 23 starts this year. And many clubs will have interest in Prado, who boasts a .293/.341/.434 career batting line and can play a variety of defensive positions. This offseason could see one or two blockbuster trades.
Call me nuts, but I think dealing Jurrjens NOW is a smart move.

You're not nuts. They're trying to sell high like the Rockies did with ubaldo.

They'll most likely swindle the royals. Dayton Moore loves bending over for Atlanta.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post spoke with someone in the Mets front office and that someone thinks the team has “no shot” to re-sign Jose Reyes:

“My instinct is no shot. I think if [GM] Sandy [Alderson] asked for it, ownership would follow his recommendations. But where the money is going to go it is not going to be the best way to spend the money, not on one player and not one player with this hamstring thing.”

“No shot” seems kind of extreme, but it doesn’t seem all that wrong.

There are a lot of teams who could use an elite shortstop and who are willing to take the risk on “this hamstring thing.” I really have a hard time on Reyes having to take the discount that Sherman suggests the Mets would need him to give them in order to sign him. And Alderson’s m.o. has never been to be top-heavy in terms of salary and star power. He’s probably far more content to use the money earmarked for Reyes for other things.
