Just to clear it up, Ronaldo is white. Native Portuguese and Spanish(from Spain) are white. The term Spanish really just refers to the Iberian Peninsula, and they are white. The moors, from North Africa invaded and their heritage blended in. This is where some of the 'darker' Spanish(Spain) people come from. Sadly, there is racial problems for them that stems in part from The Moors invading and controlling Spain in the past.
However, Spanish/Hispanic culture in America really refer Latin American culture. To radically simplify it, Latin culture is south of us, and Spanish culture is across the pond. In Latin America there are actually white Latin Americans. They have close tries to their Spanish/Portuguese ancestors.
In America (because of the narrow and uneducated view we had with demographics at first) we only had white, hispanic, black, asian etc. Very simple, broadly cut groupings. They just don't work. This is why you see "White / Non Hispanic" on forms now. We've started to realize that there are people in Latin America and Spain/Portugal who are Hispanic and not Latin American. People in their own countries think of them as White, and they identify themselves as such.
Fun note that makes you think a little,
Native Spanish people have strong ties to Germans, and the Celts/Irish as well. So there are Hispanic Irish if you will.
So yes, even 'irish' which is a country and not a race btw lol, isn't as clear as we might think either. Ironically they are referred to as "Black Irish" in many circles.
In a nutshell, if you are going to try to tell people wtf someones race is, STEP YO GAME UP. Or risk looking ignorant, uneducated, and foolish.
