exactly.

if these other countries like China decide they don't want US dollars to pay off our debts... Wells Fargo, Bank of America, Credit Union, or whatever.... Your money is officially toilet paper.

I can already imagine ppl trading their NBA 2K12 for a bag of redbeans.

cd's have contract lengths on them... you can't just sign a contract with the bank for a 2 year cd at x.xx% interest and expect them to give it back to you in 1 year, on demand. that 5000 will be looking like 3800 after the fees that the bank has on the transaction are factored in. it does not work that way when you enter into a contractual agreement like that.. you don't know what the fu*k was included in those two pages of "terms and conditions."

Credit Unions are the ONLY way to go if you like to store your money with a financial institution. I would recommend anyone who can get a credit union account DO IT!
Explain to me why credit unions are better than banks. I'm not asking to be a douche, this is a serious question. All my friends and peers that are in the financial industry give me different answers. At their core, aren't they the same (don't they have the same goals)? I am myself in the financial industry, but I don't deal with things at the retail level. The "higher-ups" with whom I regularly speak that work at credit unions consider it a cardinal sin to refer to their institution as a "bank".

Credit Unions are an investment of all the "members" of the union. So basically, all depositors at a CU own a stake in the company. Every individual that is invested in a CU gets 1 vote to elect the board of directors. CU's invest their "profits" in more community based aspects than corporate banks.

Its called a CD dude. You can't just take it out early without paying the early withdraw fee first.

Exactly. My understanding is yes you can take it out before maturity, but you better believe they are charging you a penalty.
