Jay-Z Says Weed Has Mellowed Hip Hop Out

[pic - click to view]

Jay Z thinks marijuana has made hip-hop more 'mellow'.

The '99 Problems' hitmaker believes the genre has changed over the years to become less intense, and thinks that is due to the drug consumption of some of his peers.

He said: 'Public Enemy were a great force in the 80s. Chuck D was a powerful speaker and a great thinker. The intensity of life on the street in the 80s is right there in that mix. Hip hop sounds get mellower in the 90s, when people started smoking more weed.'

The 40-year-old star also admitted movies have been a huge influence on his music as they helped him make sense of the crime-ridden area of New York he grew up in.

He told Q magazine: 'I think films are a major influence on any rapper. One of the ways you deal with your surroundings is almost to imagine you are in a drama on the big screen. It sounds crazy but it can help you survive to see yourself in terms of a story.

'You could write a whole book on what hip hop has taken from 'The Godfather' and 'Scarface' and all those gangster films.'

So is he saying he prefers the cocaine ridden style of the 80's....let's remember that this dude's idols (BIG, PAC, and Nas) are known for their weed consumption and are artists who took Hip Hop to the next level....money mellowed out Hip Hop, not weed. Chuck D rapped for his people not for a Bentley.

I think you're missing the point entirely.

Artists now don't really have an agenda to push or an audience to convince of their argument. They're all happy, chill, and promoting their lifestyle. Mainstream artists to say the least.

Even though the majority of rappers in the history of Hip-Hop smoke weed, this era seems to be in which we actually guys glorifying it. Pac smoked weed, but his music had a purpose against White America. Big smoked, but he just wanted to show how difficult it is to attain the American Dream as a black kid from the ghetto.

Artists these days don't have that backstory to their songs. It's very straight and narrow. Weed may spark creativity with some artists, but others may just be sounding a little too relaxed on their sh*t.

I guess he means everyone was politically active , then weed came along and everyone became real mellow like hippies , kinda how things switched from the 60's to the 70s.

it's a cut produced by Apollo brown on "The Left - gas mask" lp where 1 kat say's something in reference to no one battle's no more so "There's no need for rhyme fitness" or something.

this is true, now that rappers dont battle/war (im talking strictly wax skill vs skill) majority of these main stream act's don't have their pen games as sharp as it should be

You can't compare Big, Pac, and Nas' weed consumption vs the artists who talk about it now. For example, seems like ever other day Curren$y releases a song about weed.

Big, Pac, and Nas didn't have entire songs dedicated to smoking like that. They said in in some of their songs, but these n*ggas talk about that sh*t ALL THE TIME.

yeah you are exactly on point its the money and the success, Pac was probably the biggest pothead you could imagine and he was anything but mellow.
