Jadakiss And Kendrick Lamar Debate Jay-Z and Nas' Infamous Battle: 'Takeover' Vs. 'Ether'

JADAKISS SAYS: I didn’t really like the “Takeover” beat. But the words—you know what the words are! It’s like the Declaration of Independence on the battle tip. What he’s saying is crazy. I like the laaaaayyyyymmmmme part. It was heavy, but Nas’ “Ether” sits on the mantle when it comes to battle songs. From the production, to the way he formatted it, to what he was saying—he touched everything. It was an A-Plus grade. —As told to Shaheem Reid

KENDRICK LAMAR SAYS: Truthfully, I felt like everybody wanted to go against Jay-Z because Nas was the underdog. But I was riding with Jay because he was saying more facts. “Ether” was powerful, but I always thought Jay had the upper hand. Nas is an incredible artist, but Nas was the cool thing to say at the time. He was the underdog, so everybody was riding for him. —As told to John Kennedy

I was like a freshman and was a haaaard Jay fan when Takeover came out. When Nas dropped ether I was in denial, like no this can't Ether was too powerful. I knew it was a L

like Kiss said I never really felt the takeover beat...and for me it was a mobb deep diss rather than a nas dis because i never heard the last verse till way after summerjam.

Jay shouldve come harder and used an original beat for his response to ether...he had far more ammo than Nas but just didn't use it effecively with superugly...something he's probably always regretted.

I always felt like that whole beef happened at the time where the internet/ message boards took off. Most people on any hip hop message board HATE Jay-Z. Wrong time for Jay

I like Takeover better than Ether and Blueprint 2 >> both.

Jay's reaction to Ether on the radio is what sealed it though. He just reacted too ... unlike himself.

To this day I can't believe Nas got a pass for trying to act like Jay-Z was getting down on the same sh*t R. Kelly was w/ the underage girls. That was a hoe a.ss move from Nas.

Takeover beat was dope IMO. It was Jay screaming Lame on the track that really took away something for me though. I always thought it was corny. Both are great tracks though overall.

You don't hear Rapper X "tookover" Rapper Y.

What you hear is "Damn, Joe Budden 'ethered' Esther Baxter".

Isnt it funny how that if it were 94-97', Jay wouldve have def been the underdog instead of Nas???

Nas back was on the ropes but the one thing that kept me from doubting him????

ILLMATIC................

I knew Nas was sleeping during the whole I Am, Nastradamus era.

You just cant lose potential like that. like Nas said recently, he tucked it to try different things too. He was uncomfortable doing the commercial sh*t even though he sold millions off it
