Jay-Z & Kanye West’s Anti-Leak Methods Revealed

[pic - click to view]

Last Monday (August 8), XXLMag.com investigated how Jay-Z and Kanye West managed to keep their highly-anticipated collaboration album, Watch the Throne, from leaking. Since then more details on the awe-inspiring feat have been revealed.

Billboard magazine spoke to one of the LP’s main engineers, Anthony Kilhoffer, to get the low down on how they were able to keep the project on lockdown. In addition to having a no-email policy when working with outside producers (as XXL previously reported, everyone who collaborated on the disc had to record in-person), Kilhoffer told Billboard that all of the sessions were saved to offsite hard drives, stored in a locked Pelican briefcase that were only accessible using his fingerprints. Kilhoffer and fellow WTT engineer, Mike Dean were the only men that had access to those files.

Along with those precautions, the duo didn’t send the CD to get pressed up until days after it already debuted on iTunes.

“I think there are a lot of people looking at this and saying, ‘Wow, maybe these guys are onto something,” an anonymous Roc Nation executive told Billboard. “I’d be surprised if many other artists don’t use this strategy as well.” —Elan Mancini

I had a strong feeling they weren't playing but I didn't think they'd be using fingerprint scanners.

Not surprised by any of this but wow

Y'all are easily impressed, folks. Subtract all that nonsense about the fingerprints and 007 f-ckery and take in the key part: they did a digital release before a physical release.

I've said this like 3 times before in WTT related threads: when you do a digital iTunes release, you're cutting out a lot of middle men and x-factors. Digital release = artist sends master tracks to iTunes.. done. Physical release = artist sends masters to recording studios, printing presses, packaging factories, distributions, retail stores (a day or 2 before release), and a bunch of other outlets that include HUNDREDS (if not thousands) of unknown people getting their hands on the album.

Kendrick Lamar did the exact same thing and his album didn't leak unto a couple of hours before release date. And not to be technical, but I had a copy of WTT like an hour before August 8th so it's not 100% fool proof

I applaud them both for this feat. They revolutionized the anti-leak game more than they have hip hop in their careers. Respect.
