Plaxico Burress preferred the Giants but agreed to deal with New York Jets for the money: source

Plaxico Burress signed a five-year $35 million contract with the Giants right before the start of the 2008 season, seven months after catching the winning touchdown pass to beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl. Less than three months later, he shot himself in the leg, but the real self-inflicted damage was to his career and bank account.

It cost him the final month of the season and the playoffs in 2008. It cost him the 2009 and 2010 seasons.

And it cost him $25 million.

That's a lot of money. They don't pay that kind of money for sitting in prison for 21 months. That's how much of the contract he left on the table after the Giants cut him and it's the main reason why Monday he's a Jet instead of being a Giant again.

Burress' decision to sign with the Jets Sunday was all about the "$," one source texted. The receiver's call came down to the Giants vs. the Jets and the Jets blew away the Giants with their offer.

One well-placed source said Sunday that all things being equal, which means the money, "no doubt he would have rather gone to the Giants because of his history with them and he has friends there. Really, this was about the money."

The Steelers also made an offer, but the Jets significantly outbid both of them. After initially not wanting to resume his career in the New York area, Burress embraced the idea of staying in his New Jersey home. Providing stability for his wife and two young children became very appealing.

He also was intrigued by the idea of becoming the first player to win a Super Bowl for the Giants and Jets.

So, when the Jets, who pressured him into making a quick decision, offered a 1-year, $3.017 million guaranteed contract and the Giants' 1-year offer had no signing bonus, a $1 million base salary, a $500,000 bonus if he was active for all 16 games and an additional $2.5 million in incentives, it became an easy financial decision.

The Giants didn't guarantee a penny of the $4 million package. His $1 million base would not be guaranteed until he made the team. He took the sure money and it's hard to blame him. If the Giants really wanted him, they would have made a much more competitive offer with at least some of the money guaranteed.

Burress didn't even speak to any member of the Jets' organization during the process. Rex Ryan left him a couple of messages, but they didn't connect before Burress made his decision. "There was no sales pitch needed," Burress said. The deal was hammered out with Burress' agent, Drew Rosenhaus.

Funny part is if Plax would have performed got through Giants he would have made more money then he's gonna get with through Jets. Guess he doesn't feel he can fully return to form & I feel any teams contract should have been heavily incentive based for a player that many years removed.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

The Giants contract was worth a Million more... He just would have had to earn it by playing well.

Apparently he wasn't sure he could.

You see a lot of Jets fans staying classy with us?

Fukk them...

It's the truth... And it's clearly reinforced by the way they run that team. Fat Man with the Foot fetish as a coach. Santonio a.ssulting women in a bar... Braylon, the club f!ghter and drunk driver... Cromatie with more kids than the Octomom.

And now they sign a guy who just got outta prison and don't even talk to him first?

Fukk kinda sh*t is that?

The Owner is a irresponsible fool... As can be seen by what happened to his child.

jets lost more than we did on that plax deal. It's gonna take him a year to get back to form, then we can sign him then. and at least plax is honest about going for the money.
