My dad died when he was 50 from a life time of booze and drugs, he was in and out of jail up until the last year of his life and I saw first hand that no matter what I said or threated he couldn't stop.He died alone in a vacant house in Taylor Michigan.
Damm son. No one should die alone. Just my personal thoughts.

Addiction is a neurologically based disease. For many years recovery specialists have compared alcoholism or addictions to a physical disease: like diabetes. In reality addictions are more closely related to a neurological disorder like Tourette's Syndrome* than they are to diabetes.

Feel the way you want, I'd go with fact though - actually study the dusease. You may not know anyone (and thats good for you) that has this, but just incase you every come acrosss someone you learn to care for that has it, make sure you know not to say what you are saying.

And usually the people who shoot it down the most are people with the issue. I hope you dont though real talk.
tourettes is a disorder, not a disease.

im not against calling addiction a disorder, but it is not a disease.

you could have save yourself the time of writing this if you would have read my first sentence.....

and no i dont have this problem but yes i do know addicts, and guess what, it was there choice to start this sh*t...its not like you try it once and you are all of a sudden addicted..you have to want to do it multiple times so i dont buy into that bs about it being a disease.

however i do agree with Brand about us helping ppl that have this "problem" instead of jailing them..thats realtalk

Let's see I know what heroin, coke, basically all that sh*t can do to me but I still try and now I can use the excuse I have an addiction? When does one take responsibility for their own actions? I'm sorry not buying it

im not getting into the technical aspect of it just my thoughts personally....

i dont see addiction as a disease, moreso a condition. I have smoked cigarettes and still smoke weed every once in a while and drink on the weekends or have a beer at dinner or watching a sporting event with friends but thru all of that i have never once been addicted to it, but to each his own i guess. Ppl respond differently i guess.

i dont necessarily feel bad for ppl that struggle with drugs do to the fact that it was because of their willingness to to try them that got them addicted, but on the other hand i dont wish death upon anyone or the struggles that drug addiction brings to many.

friends and family can only do so much, it boils down to the willingness and the f!ght in someone to actually want to quit themselves.

rip to amy and 7 words pops...like i said i dont feel sorry for them but it is still a tradgedy that no one should have to go thru no matter what end of it you are on.
you dont have an understanding of addiction or drug use homie

just because there are people on bx who are close to someone who did/does drugs, doesnt make addiction any more of a disease.

sorry.

i have a really good understanding of what addiction and drug use is but thats not what this was about it was about whether or not it was a disease, in which i dont think it is.

i see a disease as something you have that you didnt cause by your own actions...cancer, schizophrenia, etc are diseases. being a drug addict isnt a disease...you didnt have something that caused this, you had to be willing to try and like the drugs to continue use which inturn caused you to be addicted.(most cases)

how is addiction not a disease?
people that stop doing drugs for 10+ years relapse because they really can't help themselves. they know what happens when they do drugs but they don't care they always think it will change. just like people that are addicted to gambling.

that may be true but it doesnt mean its a disease...they caused the addiction by trying this sh*t...i get black out drunk sometimes but i have never tried coke, speed, lsd none of that crazy sh*t and i have been around it and with ppl who have done it. people just dont wanna own up to sh*t and their own failures so all of a sudden its something they couldnt control(a disease).

lsd really isn't crazy sh*t, very hard to get addicted to somethin like that (i've never done it)

addiction + major drug use aren't the same though which is where i think the confusion is coming from in this thread.

it's easy for someone to say "just stop doing drugs"
but even if u get an addict to stop... who know's what happens the next time something goes bad in their life.

im sure we've all been at work on a friday and someone says "fu*k it i've had a long week time to get drunk" - addict behavior, although a small form of addiction still is addiction.
