Peyton Manning Wants To Become Unrestricted Free Agent As Part Of NFL Settlement

When it comes to NFL big names, no one wields more cachet than Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning. With the owners and players about to strike a deal for a new collective bargaining agreement, Manning, a named plaintiff in the lawsuit against the league, is reportedly making a power play.

According to a report from the Boston Globe, and later confirmed by CBSSports.com, Manning is looking to hit the open market when the lawsuit is settled. Manning would like his current franchise tag from the Colts removed and to never have that designation again.

That would take Manning from being locked with Indianapolis for one year at about $23.7 million to an unrestricted free agent, making him a high priority to re-sign for a lucrative long-term deal. The same case would apply in advance to fellow named plaintiff and Super Bowl-winning quarterback Drew Brees, who might receive the tag from the Saints as a pending free agent for 2012.

Although this development — which follows a Yahoo! Sports report that Chargers wide receiver Vincent Jackson and Patriots guard Logan Mankins either want their current tags removed or get $10 million in back compensation for 2010 season as part of the settlement — is a concern because it's coming from arguably the league's most popular player, is just another thing that needs to be addressed in order for the lockout to be lifted.

Even if the owners and players agree upon a new CBA, it will take the lawsuit to be settled for the league to officially go back to business.

No one expects the Colts and Saints to let Manning and Brees find other teams. Having been included in the lawsuit, they are simply using that fact to gain leverage with their teams to get the money and long-term security they deserve for sharing a special quarterback stratosphere with Tom Brady.

Brady, the lead-named plaintiff, doesn't need to make similar demands. Last September, he signed a four-year contract extension worth $72 million — including $48.5 million guaranteed that wouldn't make him a free agent until 2015.

I don't believe for a second he will sign with another team but it would be interesting to see how much some teams would offer. All this is his way of trying to get his contract and be secured for the next few years.

He's just doing this to show the Colts what he is worth. I cant be mad at that because he nor them have ever had to negotiate with competition so thats all this is. They wont let him leave and he wont leave.

confused because only Colts fans from Baltimore would have been bothered by the Mayflower vans move. If they were for the Colts as a franchise then they didnt lose their team.

Vikings punter Chris Kluwe has posted the following message on his Twitter page: “Sigh, and once again greed is the operative byword. Congrats Brees, Manning, Mankins, and Jackson for being ‘that guy’. #douchebags.“

if I was the Skins, Raiders, or any team that needs a QB, I'd offer him a 100 million dollar contract just to make it look like we're trying to get better...it's no way he leaves Indy

I think they all have valid point. Especially Vincent Jackson, he a dominate receiver that the charges are trying to avoid paying the big bucks, and don't want to let his talent go to another team. The Bears will pay you if the chargers won't (hopefully )

He's right if this will be the only reason the lockout is continued. But, we knew all along that this lockout was all about players wanting to get paid.

Jackson isnt as dominant as you think. System, QB and coaching make a difference. He is one of the WRs if available I would stay away from. The Bears would be better served going for Sidney Rice or if they just want a guy for the next year or two, Randy Moss.

Maybe even see what the price for Fitzgerald is and go after him if the Cards would trade him at the deadline or just wait until this time next year and throw everything you have at him.
