I have very mixed feelings about Jay. I respect what he has been able to do and an undeniable legend in the game, I am not always a fan of how he does it. I have been listening to a lot of catalogs recently. I finally got around to making all the "best of" playlists I had been meaning to make and get to rock them. I realized that in comparison I find the cream of Jays catalog personally less appealing than others like Nas, Tupac and Ghostface. But that is just personal preference, I am looking forward to this new stuff but I will say I have been underwhelmed by Jigga over the last 4 years. Its not that I think he is wack, its just that the last Jay verse that really blew me away was the Diamonds remix. Its the curse the greats have though because the set the bar so high.
Since everyone is ranking their Jay albums, guess I'll do the same. I think Black Album is his best and most consistent album, followed by RD then Blueprint 1. I am personally a big fan of Vol 3, even though many hate it and I put it ahead of Vol 1. Next comes AG (which I believe to be hugely overated) then comes Kingdom Come. At the bottom of the pile are the albums that make me question his legacy, Vol 2 which I think is hot garbage other than Hard Knock Life. Bluperint 2 is better but as with all hip hop double albums should have been a single album, I guess that is what 2.1 was supposed to be. The U dont know remix and Watcher pt 2 are real highlights though, as are a few other joints and the slick Nas disses. BP3 though is a low IMO.
