Sony's Latest Update On PSN Status Doesn't Sound Good. "We Were Unaware Of The Extent Of The Attack"

If you’re expecting to go online with your PlayStation 3 or PSP this weekend, you might want to make other plans. In the latest update from Sony Computer Entertainment on the status of the currently offline PlayStation Network it sounds like we’re in for a longer wait than we (or Sony) expected.

Sony said on Sunday that it planned to bring some of its PlayStation Network and Qriocity systems back online by end of week. But a new message from SCEA’s senior director of corporate communications Patrick Seybold provides little hope that will happen.

“We’re still working to confirm the security of the network infrastructure, as well as working with a variety of outside entities to confirm with them of the security of the system,” Seybold wrote this evening on the company’s blog. “Verifying the system security is vital for the process of restoration. Additional comprehensive system checks and testing are still required, and we must complete that process before bringing the systems online.”

Sony stressed in the past that it wouldn’t bring its PlayStation Network services back online unless it was confident in the strength and security of its system. Based on the following statement, it sounds like Sony may not have been aware of the scope and severity of its problems when it made promises to bring PSN back online in the timeframe provided.

“When we held the press conference in Japan last week, based on what we knew, we expected to have the services online within a week,” Seybold wrote. “We were unaware of the extent of the attack on Sony Online Entertainment servers, and we are taking this opportunity to conduct further testing of the incredibly complex system. We know many of you are wanting to play games online, chat with your friends and enjoy all of the services PlayStation Network and Qriocity services have to offer, and trust me when I say we’re doing everything we can to make it happen.”

So, exercise more patience, PlayStation owners. It sounds like we’re going to be waiting even longer to see each other back online anytime soon.

Sony Removes Info Stolen From PSN Hack

TOKYO, May 7 (Reuters) - Sony said on Saturday it had removed from the Internet the names and partial addresses of 2,500 sweepstakes contestants that had been stolen by hackers and posted on a website, and said it did not know when it could restart its PlayStation video games network. The company, under fire since hackers accessed personal data from about 100 million user accounts of its PlayStation Network and PC-based online gaming services, said in a statement details posted on the inactive website also included three unconfirmed e-mail addresses.

The data came from customers who entered a 2001 product sweepstakes contest. The list did not include information on credit cards, social security numbers or passwords.

"The website was out of date and inactive when discovered as part of the continued attacks on Sony," Sony said, adding that the company took the website down shortly after finding out about the postings on Thursday. Sony Chief Executive Officer Howard Stringer apologised on Friday to users of the firm's PlayStation Network and other online services, breaking his silence on the massive data breach. The company said last Sunday that it would begin restoring services within the week but a spokeswoman said on Saturday this would not be possible, and that no date had been fixed for when services would resume.

EDIT:

Sony provides a $1 million insurance policy to PSN users

[pic - click to view]

After the recent cyber attacks that compromised Playstation Network user's personal data (including addresses, passwords, and in some cases credit card info) Sony president and CEO Howard Stringer has announced that Sony will be offering an identitiy theft policy worth one million dollars to each customer.

This is part of many appology incentives that Sony is offering to customers who haven't been able to access the Playstation Network for over two weeks now icluding the "Welcome Back" package that will give all users a free month of PSN once the network is able to be brought back online.

Stringer stated, "As a company we — and I — apologize for the inconvenience and concern caused by this attack. Under the leadership of Kazuo Hirai, we have teams working around the clock and around the world to restore your access to those services as quickly, and as safely, as possible."

The identity theft package offered to users will contain:

Cyber monitoring and surveillance of the Internet to detect exposure of an AllClear ID Plus customer’s personal information, including monitoring of criminal web sites and data recovered by law enforcement. If his/her personal information is found, the customer will be alerted by phone and/or email and will be provided advice and support regarding protective steps to take. The customer will also receive monthly identity status reports. Debix works with an alliance of cyber-crime experts from the government, academia and industry to provide these services.

Priority access to licensed private investigators and identity restoration specialists. If an AllClear ID Plus customer receives an alert, or otherwise suspects that he/she may be the victim of identity theft, the customer can speak directly, on a priority basis, with an on-staff licensed private investigator, who will conduct a comprehensive inquiry. In the case of an identity theft, the customer can work with an identity restoration specialist to contact creditors and others, and take necessary steps to restore the customer’s identity.

A $1 million identity theft insurance policy per user to provide additional protection in the event that an AllClear ID Plus customer becomes a victim of identity theft. This insurance would provide financial relief of up to $1 million for covered identity restoration costs, legal defense expenses, and lost wages that occur within 12 months after the stolen identity event.

Luckily I'm busy to the extent that I wouldn't be able to play even if it were up, but to take Sony's word on any of this non-sense is ridiculous. I figure when it comes up, it comes up.
