GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) Reacts to “Gay” Lil B Album

Never one to shy away from controversy, Lil B continues to turn heads with the title of his new, forthcoming album, I’m Gay. While revealing the disc’s name during his performance over the weekend at Coachella, he explained that the statement doesn’t refer to his lifestyle; instead it has to do with the power – or lack thereof – of words. XXLMag.com reached out to GLAAD, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, to get their opinion.

GLAAD immediately disagreed. “As a lyricist, Lil B knows that words matter,” a spokesperson for the organization said. “Slurs have the power to fuel intolerance. We hope that Lil B’s album title is not just a gimmick, and is really a sincere attempt to be an ally. He has the platform and the voice. We hope he uses it in a positive way.”

Earlier today (April 17), we spoke to other artists to find out their reactions to the news. Despite B’s intention (which is still not completely clear), Talib Kweli pointed out that this signifies one aspect of rap culture that is moving in the right direction: “I’m happy to see young hip-hop heads move [away from] homophobia. “Regardless of what your stance is on gay people, homophobia or the act and practice of it is extra wack.” —Jesse Gissen

words dont mean sh*t..

but by lookin at the controversy... they obviously do..

but then again, words have been stripped of their substance.. people are so very jaded.. that really they dont..

its an argument in itself...

its not what you say.. its how u say it?

its whats intended?...

words are funny.. because we as individuals use words differently..

lil homey, u didnt do anything right there. you went left, you went right, you stayed in the middle, you did not say anything. are you feeling ok? for real...
lol..

i never say anything...
cuz theres too much...

-hip-hop-hypocrisy-

so

-get used to usage of a backwards euphemism-

based god never says anything either... or rather.. he says everything..

you figure whatever u want something to mean for yourself..

this message board if full is miss communication, and people going out of their way to hate (on artists or fans).. so, i post in a such an unbiased way to see who attacks my posts which usually hardly mean anything..

By saying that words mean nothing, i think B is actually pointing out that they mean everything.

everything and nothing are the same thing.

Well it's good to know that GLAAD has pride and dignity. I think they said the right thing considering that Lil B is making a mockery of gays. An organization could loose credibility by siding with someone who does something like that.

However, I also think Lil B's mockery of gays is doing a good thing for the gay community in general. He's making it cool to be gay and that helps gays gain more respect. If he names his album that it will be a huge victory for the gay community imo.
yeah thats just what america needs...a homos3xuality trend

Words do have meaning, and power. Its just that some words can have different meanings, and depending on the intended use or meaning, the power of said word can be stronger or weaker. I think the proper statement would be a word's power is not definite, it can fluctuate depending on the variables involved. In the 40's "Gay" was used to convey happiness. However, as times changed, as well as the development of more complex slang, and word usage, the word's meaning changed to something that would describe a person who is not socially acceptable. sh*t happens. You never know what power a word can have in the next ten or twenty years. ie "swagger. It took america, less than a year to sap the life out of that word. Now people just say "swag", and it too sucks now.
