Not sure why? If Indiana, Detroit, Memphis, the Bucks, The 76's can all pull them why couldn't we? If our money spends and you want to play and we can spend more than the next man, it wont be hard. Just because you wouldn't doesn't mean someone with a brain wouldn't too. If a job offered you $50,000 more than what you make now but you had to move to a cold climate for 6 months out of the year but you can travel you wouldn't go? Guess not - closed minded people usually don't.

Plus there are only 8 teams who have one a title in the NBA the last 30 years so you think that if the FA don't sign to one of those teams they'll just quit right? No. They have this tallent for a few short years, they'll do whatever thay can to make sure they get the most out of that tallent.

So one act makes you a bad owner? Not only that have you noticed how many Nike commercials you have seen with Lebron this year? One. Start farm just released it's 1'st commercial with him and they no longer feature his friends, and sprite also just released their 1st with him of the year. what's my point? People who have broken bread with him have actually taken a step back until hi reputation is repaired. The move he made had effect that reach far outside of cleveland and that was proven this year with the trade deadline. Not only that he did his teammates wrong, and the fan so he felt he needed to step up and say something...any owner that does that deserves credit - hold people accountible for their words. You feel most players will only focus on what he said bad about Lebron but a person with focus and a desire to play for a winner will hear the most important part of the letter to THE FANS (rememeber the letter was to the fans, not Lebron) that he'll do whatever to bring a championship to Cleveland. Now other than Rex Ryan in football who everyone loves for saying that who else is talking and putting up the cash to make it happen?

Yo also might be too young to rememeber when Dallas was not a place you wqanted to play but then Cuban got down there and not many people knew what to think of him and now player really think about playing for the man. Player will still go to the Raiders and to the Clippers (a team where the owner actually heckles his players during games) and where ever else they will had out a check for their tallents. One letter, you really think one letter to a former player who left, is going to stop someone from signing?

So you probably don't think Carmelo forced NY hand when he said if he isn't moved he'll resign in Denver? $40 mil on the table is a lot to walk from but he made NY give Denver what they wanted and made Denver feel uneasy about FA so they pulled the trigger.

Think outside emotion, and think about having enough to take care of you and your kids kid's - you'll walk to the end of earth and back so if owner who spends on his players and does as much as he can for them can get anyone to sign with them, the leauge should go back to 8 teams 4 east 4 west and call it a day

I don't hate the Cavs but that was probably the worst post-Lebron statement I've heard on this site. Best owner in sports by what measure?? Because he had the best player in basketball and wasn't able to put a legitimate star next to him for 7-8 years OR win a single game in the finals.

He is actually #5 on the SI/Forbes list

Five Best NBA Owners

5 Dan Gilbert Cleveland Cavaliers
Purchased 2005
Purchase Price Current Value W-L Winning % Playoffs Championships
$375M $477M 211-117 .643 4 0
In 2005, Gilbert inherited a woeful franchise. The lottery-doomed Cavs were riding a six-year playoff drought, but they did have a draw in a rookie named LeBron James from nearby Akron. After a rough start to his tenure, Gilbert began a process that included surrounding his marquee star with complementary talent, adding an able GM in former Cavalier Danny Ferry and installing a players' coach in Mike Brown. Cleveland made the playoffs in 2006 and hasn't looked back since. A year later, Gilbert funded a state-of-the-art $25 million practice facility for King James & Co. that is among the best in the NBA.

4 Les Alexander Houston Rockets
Purchased 1993
Purchase Price Current Value W-L Winning % Playoffs Championships
$85M $469M 722-558 .564 11 2
Alexander's reign in Houston is noted for two championships and a perennial playoff squad that has had only three losing seasons in his 16 years. And while most owners are more or less content to fill their stadiums, Alexander is driven by the desire for hardware, and he's willing to take big Wall Street-like gambles to get there. Not many owners would have gambled so heavily to bring in high-maintenance stars like Ron Artest or Tracy McGrady, trading away key players to get them. Alexander now runs the epitome of a streamlined organization as well: a star-driven team that just clocks in under the luxury-tax threshold, and a financial envy of a franchise that prompted Forbes to name Alexander as the NBA's best owner in December.

3 Mark Cuban Dallas Mavericks
Purchased 2000
Purchase Price Current Value W-L Winning % Playoffs Championships
$285M $466M 508-230 .688 9 0
Cuban rubs plenty of people the wrong way with his outspokenness and need to be the center of attention. But then you realize, if you suddenly struck it rich and bought your own NBA team, you'd probably be as giddy and fun-loving as he is. The dot-com billionaire has never been shy with his checkbook, gladly paying over the luxury tax to keep the Mavs competitive -- and for the luxury of letting his own mouth flap despite countless fines for criticizing officials. He tends to put his foot in his mouth (his comment to Kenyon Martin's mother that her son was a thug after Game 3 of the Mavs-Nuggets playoff series was deplorable), but he's a player's owner as much as he is a fan's owner and has generally been a breath of fresh air.

2 Peter Holt San Antonio Spurs
Purchased 1993
Purchase Price Current Value W-L Winning % Playoffs Championships
$75M $415M 865-415 .676 15 4
No NBA owner has done more with less. Holt maintains a fiscally responsible franchise that keeps its payroll in the middle of the pack with a cast of team-first, contract-second style players, led by an unwavering coach in Gregg Popovich. The Spurs zeitgeist is one that values hard work, sacrifice and lack of ego, and everyone in the organization has bought into it, thanks in no small part to the cues of steady-as-a-rock franchise cornerstone Tim Duncan. Holt is also one of the few NBA owners who are extremely respected in their communities as the consummate class act. The result is a team that has won four championships and has made the playoffs in 15 years of Holt's 16 as owner.

1 Jerry Buss Los Angeles Lakers
Purchased 1979
Purchase Price Current Value W-L Winning % Playoffs Championships
$67.5M $584M 1,606-822 .661 28 8
In retrospect, Lakers fans almost feel silly for calling Buss onto the carpet for dealing Shaquille O'Neal and putting up with Kobe Bryant's repeated trade requests. All is well in Lakerland again, as the organization has rebuilt itself into what may be the third dynasty of Buss' tenure. The Lakers made the postseason for the 28th time during Buss' 31 years. They've also won more than 60 games eight times, not to mention eight championships in 14 NBA Finals appearances. Beneath all that glitz and glamour is an organization that clings fast to its tradition: Magic Johnson is a part-owner, Mitch Kupchak is the GM and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Kurt Rambis and Brian Shaw are a.ssistant coaches.

a passion to win? it's all about the dollar, exposure and media market you wind up in right now man, and if you can't see that you need to open your eyes. superteams are forming everywhere. its just going to seem more prevalent in coming yrs. and it will not happen in Cleveland I can tell you that much.

Raiders and Clippers? That's your example? What BIG free agents have gone to the Clippers recently? Baron Davis? 5-year, $65 million dollar deal and he's traded 3 yrs into the deal to the worst team in the league and he didn't even wanna play there. People go to the Raiders because they hand out some of the biggest contracts to anyone who wants to play there.

Actually New Jersey made New York give Denver what they wanted but he did force their hand to ante up to get him to New York. This was random and irrelevant to throw in the middle here as well.

Gilbert is a good owner.. He's not afraid to spend to build a contender. Last year the Cavs' payroll was $90m. With the recession going on and everything, teams were trying to unload contracts and he was trying to pick up players to put his team over the top.

As for his letter to Lebron.. It was well deserved. Gilbert let him have his pick of the litter in terms of people in the organization to keep him happy. Spent over $60m out of his own profits (~$60m cap + $30m dollar for dollar luxury tax) to build him the best team. Was willing to trade for Bosh & Amare but they didn't want to go to Cleveland.

Then fired Mike Brown when it was reported that Lebron lost confidence in him and hired Scott.

There's not much more he could have done.

Well Cavs got picks and growing cap space, hopefully they can get rid of Jaminson and Parker, and keep Hickson happy, if they draft wisely during the next 2-3 years, they might be back in the picture, but trading Mo and Jamario were 2 good moves, flushing out the old, and preparing for the new.

Rumors of Baron Davis' unhappiness with joining the Cavaliers might not be entirely true. At least not according to Davis, himself.

The newest Cavaliers point guard posted a message on his Facebook page (facebook/barondavis) saying he "can't wait to join (his) new team," and that "The Beard is on its way!"

Davis is expected to arrive in Cleveland on Saturday, and be available for Sunday's home game against Philadelphia.

The message, in its entirety:

First and foremost, I want to say thank you to the fans in LA and all of Clipper Nation. Not many guys get the chance to play at home in front of their family and friends the way I have been able to the past couple seasons, and I am grateful for that opportunity. My former teammates will always be my family, and I wish them and the organization nothing but the best.

I can't wait to join my new team, bring good energy and help us win games. I'm ready to call The Q home and bring some excitement!!!

See you soon Ohio! The Beard is on its way!

BD

so if the Baron Davis experiment works and he goes back to his old self (because he'll want to play his best becuase he has one more contract in him) that they couldn't? A player will go overseas to get paid so why not stay in the US?

LOL at this point they don't have nothing to lose, they unloaded two big contracts, all they need to do is unload Parker and Jaminson to get more space to sign a couple of free agents and they got a top 3 draft pick, tear down and rebuild at this point. They got first round picks from Miami in 2013 and 2014, so they have the right building blocks to rebuild a franchise. Most likely by the time they are back, Bron will at least have 1 ring

The problem is, is that everyone is bandwagon fan anymore.. All the people that say the Cavs suck are "fans" of top teams.. Watch how many people jump on the Knicks bandwagon now... When they have Marbury running point, everyone would laugh at them, unless you live in NY. Now everyone is all about them and always have been. Timberwolves were the s**t back in the late 90's, early 2000's with Garnett.. How many people like them now?
Do the Cavs suck? Yeah 10 will put you in that category. If Detroit can have a good solid team for a few years, Cleveland can as well.
Just wait till your hometeam loses a franchise player/best player in the league and your owner sells right after. At least Gilbert is sticking up for the fans and sticking with the team.
