LeBron to NBA owners : "What did you think you were getting into?"

LeBron James took a vocal role in Friday's collective bargaining meeting in Los Angeles, according to sources that spoke to Ken Berger.

The main argument from James came against hard-line owners who recently bought NBA teams and are now trying to create a dramatic financial shift to the system.

“This has been a 57 percent system for years,” said a person who was in the meeting, paraphrasing James’ message. “This has been a system with guaranteed contracts forever. What did you guys expect? What did you think you were getting into?”

Good to see LeBron speaking up at the owners meeting, players union need a player of his magnitude to be vocal in the meetings.

^Its not about Lebron making decisions, it's about being united in the players union, and getting the support from the games largest attraction moving forward.. And LeBron made a very good point in asking the owners, what did they expect... They knew coming into the NBA and well before purchasing those teams that the players command high salaries, it's been like that for years now.. They think the players will willingly agree to accept major cut backs and pushing for a hard cap is crazy..

this. a non guaranteed contract doesn't even make sense especially in their business with all the injuries.

just because the league been like that for years doesnt mean its wrong or needs changing...

joakim noah making 13 million a year...

dudes worth maybe 6...
Yes because Joakim Noah signed his own deal, and it wasn't the owners who set the price for a player of his skill set.

u telling me noah didnt go to them n ask for say 18 million n the team came back n said 8 or 9 n then negotiating began...come on man, u smarter than that...although u are semi-chicago homerish, ur one of the best NBA dudes on BX...
18million a year? You think his agent went in there and asked for a max contract? Really? What they did do, is find a center at his position who is getting paid similar, and putting up comparable stats so he can earn his market value. Thats how it works usually, getting paid by what you are worth on the market.

both sides are wrong but many teams are in huge debt because of dumb contracts all over the place n if both sides give n take a lil it will make for better NBA..
Lets say you are an investment banker for Goldmen Sachs, one of their top 3 employee's someone who's invested and generated millions into the company.. Are you saying it's wrong for you to try and negotiate a deal with Golden Sachs too increase your salary compared to what some of the other investment bankers at Merrill Lynch,JP Morgen etc.. are making.. Is it wrong for a man trying to get the absolute value of what he is currently worth on the market in HIS PROFFESION? Because this IS in fact their job and lively hood. This blame falls strictly on the owners.. Owners have to pay out the a.ss for players who arent worth because why? There's always ONE other owner who is more than willing to over pay for said player..
There for it's an on going cycle.. So who's fault is that? If all the owners in the league actually had the balls to not offer crazy deals to these players and stand up for themselves then none of this s**t wouldn't happen. NONE.

You think players will start Latrell Spreewelling themselves and say "I can't feed my family with this" and not play anymore? I highly doubt it. Blame falls on the owners, not a player trying to get his current market value.

.something i would truly love to see again...the league has played into it with rule changes n bulls**t reffing n favoritism, the owners played into it in signing ridiculous lucrative deals to ensure keeping players out of the hands of other teams n players have played into it by being spoiled selfish douchebags all about their money...meanwhile the only people to suffer is us--the fans...
Players have to get paid and have to get paid their value.. Do you come to see an owner or a players? It's the top teams that are spending the most money, and the Knicks who were spending alot in the past were top 4 in franchise worth and revenues every year.. Fans are buying appearall with these players names on them.. The day I see a fan walk in the United Center with a Reinsdorf or a Laker fan with Buss, or a Knick fan with Dolan written on the back of his jersey is the day I take sides with the owners.

Even the Bulls ownership said it best, alot of teams and GM's around the league simply do not know how to manage their cap.. Simply do not know how to a.ssemble teams or scout properly to keep themselves at a moderate cap size with still being competitive(bulls did this for years, being in the playoffs and had cap space for damn near every big FA summer).. Yes we've never won a championship but we still, went to the playoffs for a lot of years while maintaining flexibility to sign Free Agents and continue to improve..

It falls on ownership, managing the cap and your financials.. Not the players trying to get paid what the market says they are worth.

It is still up to owners to sign the checks. The teams that are having huge problems are due to attendance, which has many factors(economy, low performing teams). Teams traditionally have relied on public funding for arenas but now live in cities that have much bigger things to worry about than how to pay for a stadium.

The fact is you have some dumb a.ss owners and GM's in the league who make it worse for the good ones.

Good for Lebron to come out strong like that. It shows a lot to have one of the biggest names in sports and entertainment come out for the players. They have a definite advantage this time around in comparison to the last labor struggle with guys like Fisher at the top and more business savvy players in the league.

but the market has been f**ked up by both sides...if u cant see that, then i dont know what to say to u...walter mccarty back in the day got a ridiculous amount of money from the celtics for what he was worth n inflation n s**t has just kept it getting steadily worse...n owners have to sign the deals to try n win...both sides are wrong n need to say u know what kobe aint worth no 20 million a year, scal aint worth his 8, rashard lewis aint worth his 18...lets fix it now, forget how f**ked up it has gotten over the past 20 years or so, lets fix it n do it right...
good points..

I've been hearing that the owners want a ridiculous hard cap though like, 55million.. and you're right players have been taking advantage of a situation over getting overpaid, but they are only doing what the owners allow.. Hopefully they can reach at a common ground where they start implementing more "incentive based" contracts where a player has to make a certain amount of all-star appearances/ average certain amount of points/ all while the team remains a certain amount of wins over .500(so it wont completely start promoting individual play where players are out there trying to reach contract incentives and going on on one to get their money..)

Basketball is just so hard to determine values because it's only 5 men on the court(where starters are playing 32+minutes in a 48minute game), and everyone of those players are important to their team in their own way.. Baseball/Football feilds whats 10-13 players at a time, so it's more so not dependent on five individuals getting hot and carrying a team like basketball.. Everyone needs to do their part in the other sports.. Probably why individuals are marketed in basketball more so than the actual "team"..
