I just watched "Un Chien Andalou"....the short film smokeweed101 has in his avatar and I didn't like it. First time watching a surrealist film.
Are all surrealist films like this? No logical storyline with meaning...?
Read up on surrealism , an art movement, it deals more with automatism and the subconscious, not a linear narrative but more of images invoking emotions from the viewer, you shouldn't watch a surrealist film with a cerebral mindset, or by trying to find a meaning.
If you want something more coherent try David Lynch or Bunuel's later works. If that is even too much for you move down to maybe Terry Gilliam who uses a lighter amount of surrealism. Personally Un Chien Andalou is Bunuel's masterpiece and the best example of surrealism in film available, there never has been anything like it before or after, the fact that he worked with the great surrealist painter Salvador Dali made it something special.
To answer your question though yes that is what TRUE surrealism really is, but not all surrealistic films are pure surrealism, most have characters and story lines, just not as linear as the average film. This is why I mention Lynch and post 30s Bunuel.
