Geohot Releases dePKG - Firmware Package Decrypter

Last chance for the doubters to retrack their words. Geohot just released an app to decrypt PUP files. These are the files that contain the firmware updates. Now the hackers can modify the files and make the update do whatever they want, ie CUSTOM FIRMWARE. With the ability to sign the PUP file coming soon, anybody with a current PS3 will be able to upgrade to a CFW and have full access to homebrew, backups, etc.

The most logical step for Sony next is to release a firmware update that does not allow you to update your PS3 through USB. Look for that next. Unfortunately if they do that and you update, you will most likely need a modchip from there on to be able to hack your PS3.
couldnt you just update the custom firmware OTA i know its possible with wii

Why would you waste money on MS certifications if you already had a degree?

Sounds cool. If it messes with my online capabilities then I'm not in but if I can run homebrew AND still play online then I'm good. Games....ehh I don't know I'll still cop games.

Certain jobs require certs instead of just a degree unless you have a masters. Times change and certs are a way to tell an employer you're keeping up with the times

That would be true if you were 40+ years old and needed to brush up on your skills. No recent college graduate would need a MS certification on top of their bachelors degree.

Ill One, unless you're 47 years old still posting on boxden.com, stop the shenanigans.

Same sh*t. Why would you waste money on 4 years of tuition if you already had your MS certification? Having both will not you much of a salary increase.

I've got about 8 certs ranging from fiber optic installation to cisco to a+ and mcse to electronic integration... And I'm working on a degree in cyber security. Certs are for specializations, and they are a benefit more than detriment.

So basically, the stock is high, buy now.

just for kicks, somebody list the current firmware PS3 is at now. Will most likely be the cut off for all these hacks now.

if you guys want this stuff, i suggest you dont update your system anytime soon.

Uh, yeah you do. When you're certified, it shows that you have knowledge in the latest software, operating systems, kernels, etc. That's why a lot of certs expire after a certain amount of time. I think Comptia requires you to re-certify after 5 years. So, sorry, there's a damn good point to go ahead and have certs while having a bachelor's. Even if he graduated just 10 years ago, it rains true.

Boxden can't be this dumb.

And for the record, I don't agree with everything DaIll says, especially in this thread, but unless you're in Information Systems, or Computer Engineering, I don't think you have an idea of what employers are looking for. Many times, these employers pay for you to get certified even after a degree.

Actually 3.55 is the current firmware. At worse case, you would need a modchip to modify future firmware. That is the worst case. But all firmware versions will be exploitable either through software or hardware. Past, Present, and Future firmware versions. Sony can only patch up new PS3 consoles. This cannot be plugged with a software update. As much as people do not want to believe it, it is fact.

And those asking for proof. They already showed on the next day the PS3 booting linux instead of GameOS without using any kind of jailbreak. They used the hardware modification method that cannot be patched up. They will release the software modification next month. The video is on all the PS3 sites. Go find the proof you want if you can understand it. Just because they are not showing videos playing a Gran Turismo 5 backup, does not mean that there is no proof out there.

It is funny how people who do not understand any of this stuff are saying there is no proof.
