SI.com's Jon Heyman reports that the Red Sox and Adrian Gonzalez could not agree to a contract extension and the deal has fallen through.

Boston reportedly couldn't come to an agreement with Gonzalez on a contract extension by Sunday afternoon's deadline. Heyman reported that Gonzalez asked for an eight-year extension while Boston didn't want to go beyond six. Earlier reports said the Red Sox might go through with the trade without an extension, but Heyman believes the trade has fallen through. Boston and San Diego agreed to a trade on Thursday that sent Gonzalez to the Red Sox and prospects Casey Kelly, Anthony Rizzo, Reymond Fuentes and a PTBNL to the Padres. The Padres said Thursday that they wouldn't field more offers for Gonzalez if this trade fell through. Meanwhile, FoxSports.com's Ken Rosenthal tweeted that the deal with Boston is "is far from over." Stay tuned.

SI.com's Jon Heyman hears that the Rangers are in on free agent Carl Crawford and that Crawford has them high on his list.

Heyman indicates that the Angels and Yankees might be the favorites but that Texas is also in the mix. The Rangers desperately want to retain Cliff Lee, but if they're unable to, which seems likely, it appears they're prepared to spend a lot of money elsewhere. They've also been linked to Zack Greinke but reportedly are "not even close" to meeting the Royals' demands

A source told FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal that Adrian Gonzalez originally asked the Red Sox for a six-year, $150 million extension, while Boston proposed $120 million for five years.

All indications were that Gonzalez wanted something longer than that. If the Red Sox were willing to offer $24 million per year for five years, then $25 million per year for six years doesn't sound bad at all. Odds are that the extension will get done, though the announcement may not come until after Opening Day.

Greinke, 27, has 15 teams on his no-trade list. The Rangers, Braves, Reds are among the clubs with possible interest in him that are not on the list, sources say. Those teams would face no such obstacle in trading for the Royals' ace.

SI_JonHeyman i like #rangers, #braves for greinke. atlanta a real nice fit.

I would've taken either honestly. Werth would've brought more pop, Crawford gets on base and f**ks teams up. Crawford is awesome defensively, Werth is at least good.

The problem is, while the Sox have the ability to overpay, the fact is they won't. And Theo won't go 8 years with ANYBODY

see what your saying, but TBH werth has showed no signs of being a distraction, or taking plays off... while crawford has had some motivation and mental issues.. that's a lot to invest in a cat for that long... crawford is an animal when he gets on base though... you'se addressed your power issues more, obviously by your signings though... I would say that werth is above good, as far as fielding his ground... wish they would show on SC some of the s**t cat does in RF... he fakes getting bad reads on balls, and fakes fumbleing ground balls around to get runners to bite... doesn't have the speed of some outfielders, but plays
more shallow then most, and can still run down deep fly outs

Brett Lawrie, who starred for the Canadian Junior National Team and played for Team Canada in the 2008 Olympics, will join the Toronto Blue Jays Monday morning.

The Blue Jays have traded for Lawrie, a former No. 1 pick, with the Milwaukee Brewers for right-hander Shaun Marcum.

The second baseman from Langley, B.C. was a first-round pick in 2008, chosen 16th overall in North America and is the Brewers' top prospect.

He hit .285 this year with eight homers, 63 RBIs and a .797 OPS in 135 games this season at double-A Huntsville, his second season of pro ball.

After missing all of 2009 after coming off Tommy John surgery, Marcum was 13-8 with a 3.64 earned run average in 31 starts.

Brewers owner Mark Attanasio, general manager Doug Melvin and a.ssistant GM Gord Ash celebrated the deal with a steak dinner at the Waldorf Astoria.

Lawrie is a pugnacious player, who plays like a hockey puck. For example, last season he and Chris Dennis of Amherstburg got into a pre-game scrap around the batting cage at class-A Wisconsin.

They were wearing the same uniform ... as teammates.

Like Adam Loewen, Lawrie is a legend on the international stage: In the spring of 2008 when he hit five homers in a doubleheader against Dominican first- and second-year pros, not one pitch he hit was below 90 m.p.h. Two were to left, two to right and the final homer to centre.

How does this move fit into the big picture ... moving Marcum the opening day starter?

Before anyone gets into a huge snit over dealing an established starter for a pup out of his teens, let's wait and see what the rest of the week brings.

Perhaps there is an inbound starter from the Central Time Zone.

For an obstacle has been removed from the path of Zack Greinke joining the Jays.

The Jays are one of 15 clubs on Greinke's no-trade list.

However, the former Cy Young award winner has told the Royals that he is willing "to go anywhere," according to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal, who has a career .621 average at being accurate.

Talk is, that the Royals would move Greinke if they could obtain a package of right-hander Kyle Drabek, outfielder Travis Snider and some minor leaguers.

Too steep?

The Boston Red Sox moved three prized prospects - Casey Kelly, Anthony Rizzo and Reymond Fuentes - to the San Diego Padres for first baseman Adrian Gonzalez.

Roy Halladay went to the Philadelphia Phillies for three prospects, including Drabek.

Gonzalez was entering his walk year, as Halladay was when dealt to the Philadelphia Phillies a year ago.

Greinke is signed for two more years at $13.5 million per season.

And if what we're hearing that the Jays is true - that after their 85-win season they now think "they are one piece away" from contending in the American League East, - well there are only two starting pitchers: Free-agent Cliff Lee. Or Greinke.

Do the Jays move Drabek, who dominated at double-A New Hampshire, made three September starts for the Jays and could start next season at triple-A Las Vegas with the potential to be an ace?

And how do the close-mouthed Jays view Greinke?

Another Halladay, as he was when he went 16-8 with a 2.16 ERA in 33 starts logging 229 innings in 2009 to win the Cy Young award?

Or, is he going to be like this season, when he was 10-14 with a 4.17 ERA in 33 starts and 222 innings?

The next few days at the annual meetings will decide whether Greinke is staying in K.C. or moving to Toronto or elsewhere.
Take it for what it is...pretty interesting.

Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports that the Diamondbacks are set to acquire David Hernandez and Kam Mickolio from the Orioles for Mark Reynolds.

That's quite a haul for the D'Backs. Hernandez, 25, turned in a 1.05 WHIP and 79/18 K/BB ratio over 57 1/3 innings this year at the Triple-A level and could be used as either a starter or reliever in Arizona. Mickolio has faded a bit since his impressive early years in the minors, but he might flourish with a change of scenery and he certainly isn't just a throw-in. ESPN.com's Buster Olney says that the deal is only pending physicals.

Padres general manager Jed Hoyer indicated Monday that closer Heath Bell will not be traded this offseason.

Hoyer told reporters that the Padres still intend to chase the NL West crown next season despite losing slugger Adrian Gonzalez to the Red Sox. Bell won the 2010 Delivery Man of the Year Award with a stellar 1.93 ERA and 86/28 K/BB ratio over 70 innings of relief. He would draw major interest if shopped, but he was a big part of San Diego's success this past season and will again play a major role in 2011. Bell remains one of the top fantasy closers.
Red Sox acquired 1B Adrian Gonzalez from the Padres for RHP Casey Kelly, 1B Anthony Rizzo, OF Reymond Fuentes and a PTBNL.

The deal was held up for a while this weekend because the Red Sox were trying to sign Gonzalez to a contract extension. The two sides never reached a deal, but Boston GM Theo Epstein has expressed confidence that something will be worked out eventually. Gonzalez has posted some rather gaudy numbers in the vast confines of PETCO Park and should do very well with a move to the smaller ballparks of the AL East. He finished the 2010 season with a .298/.393/.511 batting line, 31 home runs and 101 RBI over 591 at-bats.
