The Mariners re-signed Erik Bedard to a one-year, non-guaranteed contract, the team announced. The 31-year-old left-hander did not pitch in the Majors in 2010 and has had season-ending shoulder surgery in each of the last two seasons.

Yankees, who tried to trade for Russell Martin this week, are one of six teams interested in the 27-year-old free agent, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Michael S. Schmidt of the New York Times reports that the Yankees nearly sent Francisco Cervelli to the Dodgers for Martin (Twitter links). In fact, the Yankees and Dodgers even exchanged medical records on Wednesday.

Dont need him, Montero and Cervelli are already better than Martin and his mediocre bat doesn't belong anywhere in an AL lineup.

vladimir guerrero wants a three-year contract but is willing to accept a two-year deal from the rangers, according to mlb.com's t.r. Sullivan.

There's no way guerrero, who turns 36 in february, will get a three-year deal from anyone. He might not even get two, as the rangers are reluctant to commit more than one year to him. Paul konerko is a fallback option if a deal with guerrero can't be worked out, though it sounds as if konerko will likely stay in chicago. Vlad is pretty much relegated to a dh role at this point, which obviously limits the number of teams that could have interest in him.

hisanori takahashi's two-year contract with the angels is actually for $8 million, not the $5.5 million as originally reported.

That's a hefty chunk of change for a guy who is likely to serve as a long reliever. Takahashi pitched well in a swing role with the mets in 2010, but he'll be 36 at the beginning of next season, and we can't imagine he'll contribute enough to earn his contract.
.....

according to the san diego union-tribune's bill center, the padres are close to signing aaron harang.

It's a perfect fit for the big right-hander. His results have declined the last few years in cincinnati, but his peripherals remain strong and his flyball tendencies would be neutralized in petco park. a.ssuming the deal does get completed, we could see a big bounce-back year from the two-time 200-strikeout man.

IDK why the Phillies being so cheap. Werth is a great fit for them. Backload the contract so that it fits the budget this year and then let Ibanez walk and you'd have solid OF of Brown, Victorino and Werth for a long time.

Rumors on Manny Ramirez are DEAD. I seriously doubt that Boras is making his employment a priority of his at the Winter Meetings.

What’s the right price for Manny Ramirez?

D.J. Short

We’re not sure where Cliff Lee or Carl Crawford will end up just yet, but most of us can agree that both will likely cross the $100 million threshold. As for the future of Manny Ramirez, you’ll get a different take from just about everybody.

One day after suggesting that Ramirez may have to accept a base salary of $800,000 with incentives, Buster Olney of ESPN.com sought opinions from a host of talent evaluators, scouts, executives and general managers. Here’s what one “NL evaluator” had to say:

“I could see him getting $2-3 million base with incentives that could earn him between $5-10 million. The other thing is, this is a guy who is so obstinate and kooky, he may decide if he doesn’t get the deal he likes he just won’t play.”

If a bunch of teams are only offering him $800,000 guaranteed, I wouldn’t blame him. The thing is, it would be their loss. Sure, Ramirez turns 39 next May, was hurt an awful lot this past season and his bat looked pretty slow during his time with the White Sox, but he still managed to hit .298/.409/.460 with an 870 OPS. Not too shabby.

Considering that the average American League DH hit a modest .252/.332/.426 in 2010, Ramirez looks like a potential bargain, even in the midst of his decline.

i don't think they're being cheap at all, amaro's already said he has an offer on the table that will compete with everyone else's. it's just boras being boras thinking he can milk more money out of the other teams....that's why i'm wondering if all the other teams are making these other moves and drying up the free agent money, he would have no choice but to take the phillies' offer

Jayson Werth is nearing a deal with the Nationals, reports Todd Zolecki of MLB.com.

This certainly comes out of left field, though the Nationals do have money to spend and a hole in the middle of the lineup created by Adam Dunn's departure to the White Sox. The Red Sox and Tigers reportedly had the most interest in Werth, but Washington has apparently swooped in and wowed Werth's agent Scott Boras. Werth batted .296/.388/.532 with 27 home runs in 554 at-bats this past season. He's thought to be seeking a contract similar to the seven-year, $120 million pact that Matt Holliday signed last winter.

Zack Greinke has told the Royals that he will accept a trade to any team, according to FoxSports.com's Ken Rosenthal.

The Blue Jays are on Greinke's no-trade list -- which contains 15 teams -- but Greinke will apparently waive his right of refusal if Kansas City wants to trade him. Toronto contacted Kansas City about Greinke and the Royals are interested, reports Rosenthal. The Jays could potentially land Greinke if they're willing to part with Kyle Drabek, Travis Snider and a minor leaguer or two. Greinke is under contract for two more years at $13.5 million per season. The 27-year-old has a 3.82 career ERA and 1.26 WHIP. Dec. 5 - 4:28 pm et
Buster Olney of ESPN.com reports that the A's "appear to be out" of the Adrian Beltre bidding.

Quite the turn of events after Oakland appeared to be the frontrunner for Beltre, but it does make sense in light of Boston's failed trade for Adrian Gonzalez. Now, there is a much bigger need for Beltre to return to the Red Sox and the veteran third baseman has always maintained he wants to go back. Olney writes that Oakland is focused on other players at this point.
SI.com's Jon Heyman reports that the Red Sox and Adrian Gonzalez could not agree to a contract extension and the deal has fallen through.

Boston reportedly couldn't come to an agreement with Gonzalez on a contract extension by Sunday afternoon's deadline. Heyman reported that Gonzalez asked for an eight-year extension while Boston didn't want to go beyond six. Earlier reports said the Red Sox might go through with the trade without an extension, but Heyman believes the trade has fallen through. Boston and San Diego agreed to a trade on Thursday that sent Gonzalez to the Red Sox and prospects Casey Kelly, Anthony Rizzo, Reymond Fuentes and a PTBNL to the Padres. The Padres said Thursday that they wouldn't field more offers for Gonzalez if this trade fell through. Meanwhile, FoxSports.com's Ken Rosenthal tweeted that the deal with Boston is "is far from over." Stay tuned.

Cardinals signed first baseman-outfielder Lance Berkman, who had been with the Yankees, to a one-year contract.

This was a hot rumor all of a sudden, but Berkman still seemed like a more natural fit with the Athletics or Rockies. He figures to play right field for the Cardinals, with Allen Craig starting against the occasional lefty. That'll hurt the team's outfield defense, but if Berkman bounces back as hoped, he'll be a great fit in the lineup
SI.com's Jon Heyman hears that the Rangers are in on free agent Carl Crawford and that Crawford has them high on his list.

Heyman indicates that the Angels and Yankees might be the favorites but that Texas is also in the mix. The Rangers desperately want to retain Cliff Lee, but if they're unable to, which seems likely, it appears they're prepared to spend a lot of money elsewhere. They've also been linked to Zack Greinke but reportedly are "not even close" to meeting the Royals' demands

Werth to Nats? dumb, should have just kept Dunn, better production and better protection for Zimmy.
Gonzo to Red Sox. No way they were going to get an extension in that window. They probably will go ahead with the deal and take their chances. I see Adrian going to the FA market even though Red Sox probably could pay him the highest.
Crawford and Lee will be Yankees, 2008 offseason all over again
