He wouldn't sign with the Red Sox if they offered him 30MM per year. Think of when the Sox offered Pettitte a contract after '03 and when they offered Bernie Williams when he became a free agent. Our guys don't want to play for the Sox no matter the price.

Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein said Tuesday that he would be comfortable with Jarrod Saltalamacchia as the team's primary catcher next season.

"We'll probably have a more experienced guy than him on the roster as well, but I think we're comfortable with him in a role anywhere from backup to job share to everyday guy, depending on how the rest of the club shapes up," said Epstein. Saltalamacchia's role next season won't have much clarity until Victor Martinez makes a decision in free agency. The Red Sox were interested in John Buck, but they were not willing to go beyond what the Marlins have reportedly offered. That's probably a good thing.

In all likelihood, if they stick with Saltalamacchia as the main guy, they'll bring Tek back as the back up for one more year and let him retire a Red Sox after the season. Possibly then bring back Beltre and let Youk stay at first, or make a serious run at Adrian Gonzalez and move Youk to 3rd.

Sources: Tigers, RHP Benoit agree to deal

The Detroit Tigers have agreed to a three-year, $16.5 million contract with right-hander Joaquin Benoit, major-league sources told FOXSports.com.

Benoit, 33, is one of the more intriguing arms in a deep class of relief pitchers. Signed to a minor-league deal just as spring training began, Benoit had one of the best seasons of any setup man this year, compiling a 1.34 ERA and 25 holds in 63 appearances. Benoit showed improved stuff, coming off surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff.

By losing Benoit to the Tigers, the Tampa Bay Rays will receive a sandwich-round pick in the 2011 amateur draft. But the pick does not come at the expense of the Tigers. Rather, it is a new selection added to that round of the draft.

According to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com, the Red Sox are on the "back burner" in trade talks for Justin Upton.

Another unspecified team made a strong push on Wednesday, according to Rosenthal, and roughly 15 teams have already expressed their interest. An official from another club told Rosenthal that the D-Backs want to "win" the trade and want four top prospects in exchange for Upton. The Diamondbacks have discussed three-team and possibly four-team trades, but if the Red Sox were to trade only their own players, they would likely have to part with some combination of Daniel Bard, top prospect right-hander Casey Kelly and outfielders Jacoby Ellsbury and Ryan Kalish. As of Wednesday night, Rosenthal reports that there was "little momentum" for a trade.
give Ellsbury, not Kelly or Bard. I like Kalish too...Ellsbury and Pap for Upton and a reliever. Upton isnt that good that he requires a s**t ton of players

Ells doesn't have the value he carried into the 09 season. Bard would be stupid to trade. Paps makes too much and will be a FA. Kalish ehh.

Diamondbacks acquired 1B Juan Miranda from the Yankees for RHP Scott Allen.
It looks like Miranda had a fan in Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers. The Cuban defector wasn't going to get a shot at regular playing time in the Bronx, but he could actually play in Arizona if they don't end up with a first baseman in free agency. Miranda has a .253/.330/.458 batting line to go along with four homers and 14 RBI over 83 major league at-bats.

Sources: Jays have interest in Upton

The Blue Jays, a team deep in high-end pitching prospects, have expressed strong interest in trading for Diamondbacks right fielder Justin Upton, major-league sources say.

The Jays, after winning 85 games and finishing fourth in the highly competitive AL East last season, are showing a renewed aggressiveness this offseason.

Upton, 23, would be a more logical fit than second baseman Dan Uggla, whom the Jays tried to acquire from the Marlins earlier in the week.

While Uggla stood to earn $10 million-plus in arbitration and then become a free agent, Upton is under contract through 2015 and guaranteed $49.5 million over those five seasons.

Astros acquire SS Barmes from Rockies

Clint Barmes is looking forward to returning to his favorite position after being traded from the Colorado Rockies to the Houston Astros for pitcher Felipe Paulino on Thursday.

Barmes has played mostly second base with the Rockies in recent years, but was the starting shortstop for a month this year while Troy Tulowitzki was injured.

Barmes talked with Astros manager Ed Wade and manager Brad Mills after the deal and was told he'd be mostly playing shortstop.

Lol teams don't wanna pay non-superstars superstar money that they think they're worth. Werth's production could go down the s**tter like Bay. Upton is more intriguing but idk about giving up 6 young players for him.

The Yankees have hired Larry Rothschild as their pitching coach.

Rothschild, who has been the Cubs pitching coach from 2002-10, gets a three-year contract. He was also pitching coach of the 1997 World Series Champion Marlins and was the first manager in Tampa Bay (Devil) Rays history. Rothschild's main task will be to try to resurrect the career of A.J. Burnett, who tanked this past season in his second year with the team.
AJ needs to get it together, no more Posada catching him anyway.

The Red Sox are undecided regarding whether they will submit a bid for the rights to negotiate with Japanese infielder Tsuyoshi Nishioka.

The Japanese Pacific League batting champ has drawn interest from the Twins, Orioles and Mariners. If the Sox do decide to put in a bid, they'll likely have to find a trade partner for Marco Scutaro. The team reportedly has reservations on bidding for Nishioka because they believe Jose Iglesias will be ready to take over at shortstop by 2012.
Haven't they learned they're lesson about Japanese imports

Giants agree to deal with Huff

The San Francisco Giants have agreed to a two-year, $22 million contract with free-agent first baseman Aubrey Huff.

Huff receives $10 million in each of the next two seasons under the deal, and the Giants have a $10 million club option for 2013 with a $2 million buyout.

''He was an integral part in the team's success last season, not only with his outstanding play in the field, but also providing a great clubhouse presence,'' general manager Brian Sabean said in a statement.

Huff led the world champions in home runs (26) and RBIs (86) this year while batting .290. While he spent time in both outfield corners, first base was his position for a majority of the team’s games.

Why Yankees will offer J. Vazquez arbitration

The Yankees plan to offer salary arbitration to free-agent right-hander Javier Vazquez, but not because they want to retain him.

Vazquez, a Type B free agent, has agreed to reject the Yankees' offer, enabling the team to collect a supplemental draft pick between the first and second rounds when he signs with another team, major-league sources say.

Teams frequently make such gentlemen's agreements with Type B free agents. No harm is done to the signing team, which does not lose a pick for signing a Type B player.
