Weights - how many sets is too much?
 

 
for a main muscle group like chest or back - how many sets is too much?

right now for chest, i do 4 different exercises with 3-4 sets for each one. so im doing about 14-15 sets for one muscle group.
is this over doing it and hurting me overall? should i be doing less sets?

nah man i cant lift heavy.. so should i be doing this many sets though? if not, what should my max # of sets be for a body part?

try seven. im doing this strength training program that has seven phases. each phase has two weeks. it started off 4x4. im on my last phase w one more week to go and i am doing 7x7. my arms are completely dead. of course this much sets is limited on one body group per workout. so ive been doing full body for about two weeks and i cant complain, results are good.

so you think 7 is the most sets you should do for a body part?

see i aways figured for chest or back that you should do at least 3 diff exercises, which means at least 9 sets total. 7 sets just seems like too little, but im no expert... ?

just read this on the internet and it makes sense:

10-12 sets large muscle groups (back, chest etc)
6-9 sets small muscle groups (biceps, etc)

Training volume will vary greatly based on intensity of training and on the size of the muscle group. Large muscle groups like the back can handle 12 sets or sometimes even more. If you think about it, "Back" isn’t just one muscle like the bicep. The back is a group of muscles including the latissimus dorsi, rhomboids, teres minor and major, trapezius and spinal erectors. Because of the mass of muscles involved, you can do more sets without overtraining. A small muscle group like biceps is much more easily overtrained. 12-15 sets is just complete overkill for smaller muscles. If you’re doing that many sets, you’re probably not training hard enough (because if you were training hard enough, you’d be "smoked" by 8 or 9 sets.)

well look,,, using my strength training as an example... lets say when i just started i was doing 4x4 bench press at 205 lbs. where im at now is 7x7 at the same weight. it doesnt sound like much progress but by the third to fourth set im burned out already just cause the extra reps. by the seventh set,, that muscle group is burnt out. i like trying new things out and this workout routine im doing has been beneficial to me.

there are several ways you can go about this. for me, since im doing full body atleast 3-4 times a week, it makes sense to burnout that body part daily. im always sore.

I've been going low volume the past year or so. 6 sets max: 3 exercises, 2 sets each.

Thats for my major body parts like chest and back.. and thats all I do for the day.
