Those insiders were obviously retarded. They probably overestimated Drake's marketability and popularity with female fans and thought that could overcome the fact that nobody sells CD's at the level that GRODT did. Plus, at the time of GRODT, MP3 players STILL were a bit novelty (the ipod hadn't hit it's stride yet) so CD's were the way to go.

Plus, nothing against Drake, but 50 had worldwide appeal. I haven't really heard too much about Drake outside of N. America, which isn't unusual. Wayne isn't that popular outside of the U.S. and Jay-Z's only recently acquired a loyal international fanbase. For some reason, international audiences love Eminem and 50 though.
Agreed

In todays music genre it isnt about record sells anymore, its about single sells, as long as he has a hot single he will be fine.

LMAO, this b**ch has theeee worst arguements for everything ive ever saw. Yall just need to quit feeding her your comments and maybe shell go away. U MAD? she doesnt have a valid point for anything. Out of some of the greatest debut albums ever, Em did 400k+ with SSLP (tech not his first but his coming out), Ye did 400+ with College dropout, 50 did 600+ with GRODT, all these debut albums sold around 500k... like Drakes

Today is a down economy PLUS everyone downloads albums, only true fans or uptight families with parents that dont let their kids download music and s**t actually BUY albums... think about the last album you bought??? mine? G-Unit B4M... which was like 03 or some s**t... ever since then ive downloaded everything, why waste 10+ dollars when u can get CDQ anywhere online for free just waste that 10 on some blank cds and u got 20 CDs for 10 bucks...

Drake doin 400k as a debut album is as good as eveyrone elses debuts in a poor internet driven economy, WIN. No I dont like Drake, frankly J. COle is way better, I cant take a W away from the man... WIN WIN WIN for 400k on a debut nowadays. Jay DID do 400k with BP3 first week sales... WIN

f**k her and let her live in her own little world... she prob gunna say some dumb s**t about this too like wantin sources or something rediculous, google it b**ch i wont be back in this topic because this was already a big enough waste of my time

Only person i can think of that had the media in there pocket for a debut like Drake is 50 cent and he sold 800k+ two weeks in a row

Eminems buzz didnt get huge til his next album because people would of been very skeptical of a white rapper after what had went before and Dre was not the powerhouse he had been in the industry at the time either

Drake has been in the public eye a while and has had an ep on the charts(which was technically his debut)

So you want to acknowledge buzz but you don't want to acknowledge the availability of bootlegs or the economy right?

All them factors were there when people made there a.ssumptions and i dont think analysts would of predicted him to be doing 4ish times less than Eminem(they a.ssumed he would outsell everyone infact),remember the year was supposed to be his to lose according to Complex magazine

Sales might be at rock bottom but it is possible to sell good numbers ESPECIALLY with the media in your pocket, look what the crappy Carter 3 sold because of the overhype it received

Eminem put out Relapse and it did solid but didnt set the world alight(because it wasnt for everyone) but with Recovery people are more willing to reach for there wallets

rappers aren't selling less cause of the economy. rappers are selling less cause rap music is garbage these days. all songs sound the same, no lyrical content, it's all about how hard the beat bangs. f**kin trash. all these clowns would never have even been mentioned back in the 90's cause they would have all flopped hard.

It was expected to cruise to platinum though

People can say other rappers would love to be going plat but the fact is this album under achieved and it had all the producers, features and media backing he could of wished for.

^As a matter of interest what sized venues does he play at?

for a new artist struggling or not he's still doing great numbers. Most establish 10+ yrs. artist cant even do it. and for him to have lost majority of his hype for releasing the album so late and still selling good is great IMO
