2011 MVP Power Rankings (NBA)

Certain NBA sticklers discount the significance of the league’s Most Valuable Player award even in the thick of basketball season. The games in June are the ones that matter, they’ll cry in touting the superiority of the Finals MVP trophy.

Here at The Race we respectfully disagree, because a prize sought by as many as 450 candidates across six months seems more desirable than one that, one way or another, will be handed out to one of 24 contestants after two weeks of work.

It would be one thing if the Finals MVP were occasionally held back, shelved, and only presented in those years when someone truly achieved greatness in the championship round. Now that really would honor Bill Russell, the Boston Celtics icon after whom the award is named. But the trophy is bestowed every June, no exceptions, and – since in all but one case it’s gone to a player from the winning team – the pool of eligibles is really just 12 guys deep. Any shallower and it would be like the “Best Dad” trophy your kids got you on Father’s Day. Sweet and all but, uh, who else exactly was in the running?

Besides, if you really must know, members of The Race committee need something to justify their existence. A gig that can be stretched to a half year always is better in an economy like this than one that begins and ends in a span of 14 days.

As a matter of fact, a gig that can begin three months earlier – at least with this Summer Edition one-off – is even better. But there is a legitimate reason, too, to check in on the top finishers from last season’s Race: Given the amount of player movement in the NBA this offseason, the balance of power and the intra-team dynamics have shifted in enough precincts to alter the MVP pecking order before the first ball gets rolled out at training camp. The committee felt it was worth weighing in on those shifts, however slight or dramatic. (Therefore, the committee will be expensing its big lunch tab at Morton’s over which this installment was discussed.)

The aforementioned sticklers might want to avert those rolling eyes. But for the rest of you, here is the MVP Race, Summer Edition:

1. Kobe Bryant
2. Kevin Durant
3. Dwight Howard
4. Dirk Nowitzki
5. LeBron James
6. Deron Williams
7. Carlos Boozer
8. Amare Stoudemire
9. Carmelo Anthony
10. Steve Nash

Jockeying by players sets stage for MVP race - NBA - Yahoo! Sports
right now, i think kobe will get it. lebron & wade f**ked themselves out of it, durant will be the choice for emo people who don't want kobe to have it, dirk, nash and dwight won't be taken seriously, and unless boozer/williams/amare turn into white canadians overnight, the media won't allow them to turn the corner that fast, no matter how well they play image

List lost credibility when they have Boozer instead of Rose at 7..

If Boozer is our leading scorer, or is the best player on our team, we wont be making the playoffs and he damn sure wouldn't be top 10 in MVP voting.. Rose infact would have to decline for all that too happen..

Thats true, but when the season rolls around this idiot journalist will see.. But regardless, its weird how he says he expects Rose to have a D.Wade type year but yet puts Boozer in his top 10? Thats kinda odd.

thats where you're wrong..if he makes chicago more than an 8 seed, which i think he will, then he will get more credit than rose...

rose is good but he hasn't had his breakout year yet because of his jumpshot but if he finds that (which he says he did) then yea, rose should be above booz..for now, boozer will be considered the guy that helped the team elevate into a legitimate contender..

i see kobe and durant battling it out..

bron and wade will be up there as well bc one of them is obviously be the leader of that team that should have the most wins in the conference..

s3xy pick: Amare

he won't win it but I really feel with d'antoni at the helm, the knicks will be contending for the 8 spot.

Nobody on Miami could possibly win that unless 2 of the big 3 get hurt and the other carries them into the postseason

not sure why people are hating on boozer like he didn't average 20 and 11 on 56% his first full year back from injury. i wouldn't say he's top 5 for mvp but most def deserves to be mentioned especially since the bulls are a top 4 team in the east now with him

For one Boozer has never carried a team in his entire career. He's been second fiddle his whole career and the same s**t will happen when he's on the Bulls.. This team will go through Rose first and foremost like it always has.. I watch the Bulls 82 games a year, and listen to all the coaching interviews and plans.. I can tell you right now, the Bulls will only go as far as Rose takes them.. And if Boozer has a career year.. Then Roses a.ssist numbers will go through the roof, and Rose isn't averaging less than 20ppg..

Just because this idiot says "Bulls fans are expecting MVP considerations from Boozer" shows just how out of touch this guy is with the Bulls fan base.. We are expecting a good post presence nobody said anything about MVP from this guy or otherwise he would have been paid like an MVP performer.

The fact that he expect Rose to be Wade like and put Boozer on the list is hilarious too me.. Is he saying Boozer is better than Wade? or even close for that matter?
