Not really. Labels have always taken a large chunk. Top that off with royalties to producers and others involved in the albums work (from producers to engineers to even designers in some cases) it may be more now just because some artists are making better deals with labels themselves.

The artist is the LAST person to get paid off album revenue.

But after Em got established enough to give him his own label, he most likely got a little more than average from Interscope/Universal.

Yeah that's how you know he gets money because he's making that much in years where he doesn't even release an album or tour I can only imagine how much he made when he did.

before 360 & indie deals became popular, artists used to get 1-11 points per album, depending on their popularity/deal, lets say em had a standard deal and got all 11 points...1 point = 8 cents which = 88cents an album...

however nobody knows em's deal, he might have got back end cash, he might have gone over/under budget which affects his bottom line etc...record sales are the hardest thing to judge $ off of...the indie record deals are a joke...NO ARTISTS is profiting 6-7 $ an album when albums wholesale for 7.50-9.00...

Well Dr Dre and him produced nearly everything he has ever done until now(Recovery has a good few outside producers) so he aint been losing money that way.

People might say his production isnt good but he gives his beats away for free he is definitely not in the game for the money(he obviously would of been at the start),he did the entire LTTG album for free.

With singles and album sales he has definitely made over a billion for interscope.Put it this way he has sold more on his own than Cash Money have collectively and they started earlier.

Cant remember the name of the book i read, but it was by a lawyer who worked with top artists the last 20 years, seen the trends, the changes that record labels made in contracts, that they all did simultaneously in coordination with one another in order to take more money from the artist...he said that record labels take 2 dollars off packaging of the cd alone, then the record company requires their cut, which doesnt include studio time, so take that bit out, producers percentage, any featuring artists percentage and after that plus a lil fee here and there...plus the album advance they receive for music videos and the promotion.... TOP artists, which he worked for, get a little over a dollar a record...but if ur not a top artist, ur lookin at dimes per record. the big money does come from shows, lawyers always make sure their artists have a stipulation that any recoupment necessary from the advances and fees that they make off the cd that dont add into the record companies payout for the album cannot come from shows. also, u either have to rent or purchase the equipment u use for the shows themselves.

Arrr...FIRST (even before you think about contractual sales points), you need to consider that the record label goes through a nationwide distributor. In modern times, the last figure I've seen typically that the distributor pays the label is %63...which is generally in all the cases I've brokered about $6.99 per sale - the distributor keeps the other %37 for their adminstrative/shipping work. This is why after the first release week, most labels opt to often raise their CD prices to crack-head mall prices of $15-17, so they can generate more profits.

NEXT, after the money comes back (minus what the distributor took from it) then the label pays the artist his contracted sale points total. On major labels, because of all the adminstrative work, paperwork, and legal fees, they keep ALOT of the profit themselves. I don't have a completely accurate factual points total for Eminem's contract, but in comparison...I know from 1997-2006 [from albums "In My Lifetime Vol. 1" to "Kingdom Come"] Jay-Z was making a little less than 48-cents on every CD sold. I'm pretty sure Eminem is making around this or a tad bit under. It all depends what they negoiated on his contract, but legally I know he didn't generate as much money as you are claiming.

In retrospect, remember during the fanfare of TLC's "Crazys3xyCool" album selling over 14 Million worldwide, they contractually were kinda tricked and only receiving 2-points (or 2-cents per CD sold) and all 3 ultimately went backrupt.

PS - and as Patt24 stated...the whole story about getting $8/sale at an indie is wife-tales. During the propaganda campaign Jim Jones was running during his "Ballin" fame about getting $8 per CD sold, Koch Records themselves PUBLICLY said this was false, as they (Koch, the label) is only getting back $6.99 after nationwide distribution, and taking out their own cut BEFORE Jim Jones gets anything. So Jimmy was kinda gassing up a lie during those times. Years later, artists like Xzibit & Rah Digga were both intrigued by Jimmy's "claims"...so when they went to Koch asking for their "$8-deal"...the reported offers were much-much lower (they offered Xzibit a $4/sale deal....and offered Rah Digg a $2.70/sale deal.

but yea...all of u are right, artists don't make much on cd sales...even after you recoup the advance u dont get much. But really it all depends on how much ur contract says u get per cd.....
