Secret JJ Abrams Film To Be Unveiled With Trailer Before Iron Man 2
Much of the world has received Iron Man 2 already (I’ve seen it with a paying crowd, and rather liked it), but the USA and Canada do not. Almost as though compensation for the wait, however, it seems that the film’s prints are coming to North American cinemas with a special in-the-can bonus.
Pretty much recreating the surprise of when Cloverfield burst from the shadows with a mysterious trailer before Transformers, it looks as though a new secret project from JJ Abrams is going to be officially unveiled this Thursday, when Iron Man 2 takes its first bow at midnight screenings.
This is curious enough. There are, however, some other small, teasing details to discuss and they’ve gotten me even more interested.
Note that all of this comes from Drew McWeeny at

Hit Fix who, if I read the situation right, was actually considering not posting the story and keeping the trailer secret (see:

Twitter). Has he done the wrong thing? Has he undercut the magic a little?
I don’t think so. He certainly hasn’t got any info to share on what is actually in the trailer, or even a hint of what the film might be about. Drew has only given the hype and anticipation a kick-start. Then again, I would say that - look what I do for a living.
Okay, maybe there are some tiny hints of what the film might be about. There’s a title for one thing: Super 8. This might be, I’m thinking, just a code title, though I a.ssumed the same about Cloverfield. And there’s some suggestion of rumours (which rumours? where?) that the film is somehow a Cloverfield sequel.
One theory would be that the film is a Cloverfield prequel - Super 8 home movies being a precursor to the video we a.ssociate with the first film. I think that theory is likely wrong, but you never know.
I also wonder if Super 8 is the same thing as 500 Rads, a previously reported secret Abrams project…? Very possibly, I think. How many mystery boxes can one man be prepping?
The story goes that Abrams directed the teaser but isn’t directing the film. Who is? And why didn’t they direct the teaser?
So, there we go - more questions than answers and I’m sure there’s more of both to come (and in similar proportions) when the trailer gets unspooled for the first time this Thursday PM.

Exclusive: JJ Abrams’ Super 8 Teaser Trailer Description Revealed
We’ve told you that the super secret movie trailer for JJ Abrams next film Super 8 was attached to Iron Man 2. I have just received a reliable report from someone who has seen the trailer. I am 100% sure that this report is legit.
Here are some spoiler free details:
I can confirm that it is not a Cloverfield sequel or prequel.
It is written and directed by JJ Abrams.
Yes, produced by Steven Spielberg and Amblin Entertainment (not Dreamworks).
And it takes place in the late 1979.
We have a full description after the jump. But before you read that, let me urge you not to — if you’re seeing Iron Man 2 in the movie theater, why not just wait.
I know it’s hard, but reading the description won’t be anywhere as much fun as watching the trailer the way it was supposed to be enjoyed — on the big screen, with a big crowd. But for those of you who just have to know right now, I have included the long/detailed description after the jump.
Again, this is your last chance to turn back.
You don’t have to read the description…
Are you sure?
Here is the teaser trailer description from our source:
The trailer lasts about one minute and a half.
It begins with the Green MPAA screen, followed by the Paramount Pictures logo. No Bad Robot at the header.
A train rushes by the screen. We notice that it has lots of cargo.
Text comes on the screen: “In 1979, The U.S. Air Force Closed A Section of AREA 51.”
We see the railroad crossing light blinking and ringing as the camera pans up we see some sort of light moving in the background. What is it? A UFO?
More Text: “All The Materials Were To Be Transported To A Secure Facility In Ohio.”
No, it appears to be the headlights of a yellow 1970’s truck, which skids in a 180 degree motion, and suddenly pulls onto the tracks.
Point of view of the truck heading into the light.
Black screen and white text: “From Producer Steve Spielberg”
We see the truck explode as it hits the train.
Then… the cargo train is heading towards the car explosion - BAM. It is wrecked, thrown from the tracks like a wild snake. The flaming metal body flipping towards the camera. Cars flying through the air. It is INTENSE.
Another black screen and the text: “And Director JJ Abrams”
The camera really slowly moves in on the wrecked pieces of the train, most of which is now just scrap metal. At least one car remains intact.
Black screen, white test: “Next Summer”
We see some sparks.
Black screen, white text: “It Arrives”
We pull up on one of the train cars with a US Airforce logo. The wheel on the door begins to spin out of control as we pull in closer. The wall of the door begins to bend like some huge force is punching it from the inside.
Cut to one second of a close up of an 8mm camera lens.
Cut to black. White text: “Super 8″
The credits at the end were pretty bare.
Paramount Pictures Presents, An Amblin Entertainment/Bad Robot Production

Written and Directed by JJ Abrams
And the bottom featured the Amblin Entertainment, Bad Robot and Paramount Pictures Logo.
It definitely feels like a late 1970’s Spielberg film, think Close Encounters of a Third Kind. I’m excited to see what the actual movie is about.
If it is anything like a Spielberg film from that era, it will probably be set in the suburbs and focus on a middle class family who somehow gets stuck in the middle of this alien situation. I love Close Encounters, ET and the old Amblin films. Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci have been saying that they’re trying to make “Amblin” movies, but have not even come close. I hope that JJ Abrams is able to deliver something closer to those movies. I have faith, and from what I’ve heard — this trailer is dead on.

The trailer was shot independently of the film a month ago, and the special effects were done under the cover of Abrams new NBC series Undercovers.
Variety says the film will begin principal photography in Fall 2010.
The film’s actual budget is in the range of $45 million-$50 million.
It will be shot traditionally, and not through a handheld Super 8 Camera ala Cloverfield.
It will be released in Summer 2011.
HeatVision says that actual movie has something to do with “the possibility that a group of kids in 1979 are playing around making movies with their Super 8 cameras (as Abrams and Spielberg did as kids) and accidentally capture something … sinister, on film.” This certainly gels with Vulture’s original theory on the trailer.
