Fallout: New Vegas Collector's Edition revealed

May 11, 2010 (Rockville, MD) – Bethesda Softworks®, a ZeniMax® Media company, today announced the Fallout®: New Vegas™ collector’s edition (CE) for Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, and Games for Windows. The limited collector’s edition is available in North America for pre-order now through participating retailers.

In addition to including the highly anticipated game, this premium version of Fallout: New Vegas also includes the game-inspired items below:

♠ “Lucky 7” poker chips. Each of the seven poker chips was designed to represent chips from the major casinos found on the New Vegas strip and throughout the Mojave Wasteland.

♠ A fully customized Fallout: New Vegas deck of cards. Each card in the pack has been uniquely illustrated to depict characters and factions found within the game. Use the cards to play poker, blackjack or Caravan, an original card game that was created by Obsidian especially for New Vegas!

♠ A recreation of the game’s highly coveted “Lucky 38” platinum chip.

♠ A hardcover graphic novel “All Roads”, that tells the story of some of the characters and events that lead up to Fallout: New Vegas. “All Roads” was written by Chris Avellone, the game’s creative director, and created in conjunction with Dark Horse Comics.

♠ ‘The Making of Fallout: New Vegas’ DVD. This documentary DVD will contain exclusive video content, including interviews with the developers in which they take you from concept to creation and discuss topics such as story, setting, legacy of the Fallout franchise and more.

“We’re offering this very cool collector’s edition to give fans the opportunity to own some of the items that they’ll discover while playing Fallout: New Vegas,” said Pete Hines, vice president of PR and marketing. “We are also expanding their experience with the game by including a top-notch graphic novel worthy of the Fallout name and a DVD that gives them a behind-the-scenes look at how the game was created.”

I started Fallout 3 on 360 and then lost the save file because I had to give the hard drive back(was a borrowed 360)

I started it on PC but uninstalled it. I may still have the save file. The PC version was the best one too imo. After that I might cop New vegas on ps3 when it come out.

We recently got our first major look at Fallout: New Vegas, where Bethesda and Obsidian made it abundantly clear that this is no mere expansion to IGN's 2008 Game of the Year. In case you're the type of person who likes things in list format -- or if you're just looking for a bit more about this upcoming RPG -- we've compiled a set of reasons why this is one game you should be excited for. We are, after all, and don't you want to be like us?

It's Massive
Fallout: New Vegas is promised to be as large as Fallout 3, both in terms of the number of gameplay hours it offers and the size of the world to explore. That means well over 100 hours of apocalyptic wandering are on tap, and it doesn't end with the close of the main story. You're free to keep laying waste to the wasteland and working towards that level 30 experience cap even after the big show has finished. IGN's first demo of the game lasted over an hour…and we didn't even get to see downtown New Vegas.

Back to the Future
Obsidian Entertainment, the development studio working on Fallout: New Vegas, has a history with the franchise. Stay with us, this gets a little confusing.

Black Isle Studios developed the first two Fallout games, which were published by Interplay. When Interplay went belly-up, Black Isle was disbanded. Several members of the team, including its founder, went on to create Obsidian Entertainment. Meanwhile, Bethesda purchased the Fallout license and revived the series with Fallout 3. The original Fallout creators, now at Obsidian, were handed development back for Fallout: New Vegas.

What does that mean for you? Not all that much unless you're a long-term fan of the franchise. If you are, hold on to your hat. You can expect lots of subtle references to past games through everything from returning weapons and enemies down to classic music themes heard once more.

Sin City
Wandering around Washington DC was fun in Fallout 3. The location offered some great fodder for jokes, given its political history and all. New Vegas is an even better location for Fallout, especially when you consider the dark humor and alternate reality the series is based in.

Consider Las Vegas in the 1950s and '60s, the time period from which Fallout projects itself into the atomic age. Mobsters ruled the downtown Strip. The Rat Pack was the hottest act on earth. Gambling was still a classy thing to do. Now imagine all of that with robots and guns. In Fallout: New Vegas, the Hoover Dam is still providing energy and downtown Vegas is still largely intact. There's a whole lot of room for morbid humor here.

Mod Nation
This one's a simple change, but a big one. In Fallout 3, there were a series of weapons that you could craft by finding the correct parts and blueprints. That was the extent of the tweaks you could make to your arsenal. For New Vegas, Obsidian is adding an entire weapon and ammo modification system. Most weapons in the game will have at least one mod that can be found or purchased, and then slapped on for added firepower.

If you find a gun at the beginning of the game that you love, you won't have to ditch it so quickly in favor of something better. Just look for a new clip or a scope and you've got yourself a brand new death bringer.

And if that doesn't make you happy, perhaps the tweaked combat will. New Vegas let's you aim down the sights during real-time combat and adds new VATS options for melee weapons.

Hardcore Mode
There's a funny argument against Fallout 3 that goes something like this: Once you reach the level cap the game is too easy. Or, as I like to put it, once you have created a badass character he's too much of a badass. Well, for all of you people that were simply too good at Fallout 3, meet Hardcore Mode.

This new level of difficulty being added for Fallout: New Vegas is for anybody that loves a challenge. It may as well be called Realism Mode. Everything has weight, even ammunition. You'll have to eat food and drink water regularly to stay alive. Stimpacks won't heal instantly, so you won't be able to spam them in the midst of a f!ght. And if you break a bone, you'll need a doctor and some bed rest to heal it.

Sounds rather punishing to me, but I'm sure there will be some folks out there that will accept the challenge.

Scans/info from German Gamestar's June preview

New information (a few spoilers):
- The NCR has lost contact to the west and is underserved due to the f!ghts with Caesar's Legion.
- Caesar's Legion dominates New Vegas.
- The NCR was f!ghting hard against the Brotherhood of Steel for Hoover Dam. The NCR has won this battle, barely.
- The NCR troops at McCarren Airport lost the contact to Hoover Dam as well.
- The main task of the courier was to deliver a package to Primm. By now we should know how that turned out...
- The small and big weapons skills are merged into one skill simply called 'Weapons'.
- Explosive weapons like Missile Launchers and Fatmans are now in the skill category 'Explosives'.
- Repcon, a former rocket factory, is supposedly inhabited by ghouls. Explosions can be heard from there from time to time...
- Craig Boone, the ex NCR sniper holed up in Novac, will attack the player, if he sides with Caesar's Legion. If you decide to do so, you'll end up with a bullet in your head if you wander too close to his nest.
- The orbital laser weapon Archimedes 2 can only be used once a day. As mentioned before... this thing kicks serious a.ss.
- New creature: Cacadores, they look kind of like bloatflies with shiny / colourful wings. Not much else is said about them.
- Something like Bobbleheads will be in New Vegas as well and it will boost players stats. What it will be exactly isn't known yet.

Who: Fallout:New Vegas Lead Designer

Fallout: New Vegas lead Josh Sawyer has answered some fan questions concerning the topics of reputation systems and video games as art. Check em out:

Q: Every Obsidian game has some kind of Reputation or Influence system. What makes that heavily abstracted, numerical system preferable to, say, tracking specific statements or actions that can have a more concrete effect on a relationship?

A: I don't think these sorts of systems need to be used for every character and group. In some cases, the number of inputs is so small, and their impact so large, that using quest variables makes more sense. Abstracted, finely granular systems make the most sense when the player has a lot of ways to influence a character's or group's opinions. If a character speaks to you often, or if you have many opportunities to perform actions that can influence the character's opinion in small ways, using a reputation/influence score is easier, more flexible, and generally less of a headache.

Q: Do you think that the view of video games as low art, or not art at all, might stem from the fact that despite being mass-produced, their media value is entirely Cult as opposed to traditional art which is non-mass produced with high exhibition value?

A: When a person classifies something as art (or not art) of any grade, the reasons are arbitrary. I don't find any value in speculating on the source of those reasons or attempting to argue against them.

Ultimately, I would rather spend my time making something new that a another person may or may not consider art than argue with them about why they definitely should consider what I've made before to be art.

Q: Connecting to the reputation/influence question, Obsidian's games always had a visible feedback, e.g. the '+1 reputation with x*x' pop-up in Alpha Protocol. Some would argue that this breaks immersion, what's your opinion about it?

A: People have different expectations of feedback clarity/immersion. Because character/faction influence often builds over time and cannot show immediate results, letting the player know when small increments are being made is a way for the game to indicate that yes, something changed based on what you just did.

Health bars can also break immersion, but being able to see health bars helps the player make tactical decisions. Some players would rather see the health bars and lose the immersion. Others would rather lose the health bars and retain the immersion.

Because I believe that game play should be the primary focus of a game, I will always push for more clarity/certainty if the mechanics of the game are inscrutable to the player.

Go and ask Josh a . (he really does answer 98% of them asked)
