The is running a little story on Fallout: New Vegas which contains some new extra snippets of info on the upcoming role-playing game. From the little information given, it doesn't sound like Fallout: New Vegas will break the mold and be a drastically different game from Fallout 3, but that doesn't mean changes are not in store.

Rather than beginning with a nameless survivor in a vault, New Vegas begins with a bang. According to USA Today, it starts with your character being shot and left for dead in the middle of the desert, forever unable to complete his delivery mission. Thankfully, a robot (seen in the teaser trailer) digs you out and takes you to Doc Mitchell to be patched up. There you'll be able to customize your character in a way that sounds similar to Fallout 3.

Once ready, you'll be able to explore the area around New Vegas. The game takes place several years after the events of Fallout 3, but that storyline does not continue in New Vegas. Pete Hines, VP of Marketing for Bethesda, told USA Today, "Vegas is up and running. It is not a ghost town. It still exists and thrives. There are casinos, and you can go down onto the Strip. It will have a very different feel from that standpoint."

The area to explore is roughly the same size as what you got in Fallout 3 and Bethesda is promising that it will take hundreds of hours to explore.

Got a few tidbits from the lead designer for New Vegas, J.E. Sawyer



* New areas will open up for the player depending on your reputation

* Not all weapons have mods

* "You only buy mods from stores" - once bought you highlight the weapon you want to add it to in your inventory and apply it

* They will cost you a lot of money

* Hardcore is seperate to difficulty

* Hardcore is more of a mechanical shift as opposed to just bumping up hp - he compares it to Ninja Gaiden

* There is a dehydration meter in Hardcore mode

* Dehydration meter will have impact on the player (most likely drop in stats)

* Being out in the desert in the day, as opposed to night, will have a greater effect on your need for food and water

Got some time set aside at the end of the year? Watched Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome more than twice? Fallout New Vegas could be the game for you then. Staying true to the Fallout name, New Vegas is said to be comparable to the Washington DC wasteland in size and will “take you hundreds of hours to explore every nook and cranny” according to Pete Hines, Bethesda’s VP of Marketing and PR.

Fortunately for those who weren’t too keen on the bountiful supply of rubble and ruins found in Fallout 3; the post-apocalyptic “Vegas is up and running. It is not a ghost town. It still exists and thrives. There are casinos, and you can go down onto the Strip,” elaborates Hines.

To explore this new expanse, the player will a.ssume the role of a non vault dwelling courier “shot and left in a shallow grave in the desert, lifted of the package you were entrusted with delivering.” Never easy being a courier.

News time children! Few scraps for yall straight from the German PC Gamers mag.

* Opening sequence: Courier is executed with a headshot. (No ambush, as previously speculated)

* Character creation: Mitchell holds a mirror in front of your face "I hope I put you back together properly so you recognize yourself."

* Character creation: the G.O.A.T. is replaced with a psychoanalysis (ink blot) test.

* Weapons: picture of a hunting rifle included. Modifications include a scope, larger magazine and a 3rd for faster reload between shots.

* Weapons: picture of a normal and a unique 9mm Pistol. Shown mods: scope and magazine enlargement. One gun shown with both, so having two mods on one gun (at least pistols) has been confirmed.

* Weapons: The unique pistol has a unique skin, engravings and a picture of Virgin Mary on the grip. This could mean that every unique weapon has its own skin. It's also mentioned that unique weapons will have unique properties, not just added damage or a bigger magazine.

* Weapons: Concept art of a guy in the trenchoat from the teaser wielding a Fallout 3-style minigun (It's a little bit smaller though, but the minigun will return)

* First Quest: When you leave the Powder Ganger Quest unsolved, you'll encounter them later when they are more powerful so some choices you make during the game reveal their consequences far later.

* First Quest: You can convince Mayor Trudi to ambush the Powder Gangers with a sufficient sneak skill.

* Some NPC companions will have their own quests. The ghoul follower Raul's quest won't be the only one.

* Radar: A new yellow bar will represent your followers on the radar. Looks like they're going to make AI followers a lot more useful.

* "Caps" are mentioned as currency, not poker chips as was rumored.

* Hint that weapon modifications can be found in the wastes, my guess is you get a few basic upgrades when you first visit the gunsmith and need to find the rest.

* Some statements hint that the NCR and the Brotherhood of Steel somehow work together - you easily gain access to Helios 1 by having a good reputation with NCR and BOS

* Game world will be as big as the one from Fallout 3. :dancingcool:

* Chris Avellone on game development: "We are currently working on the dialogues and places. The rest looks pretty good for now."

Don't worry about that, the only semi-preserved towns will be The Strip and The Hoover Dam as far as we know. Nevada wasn't hit by the bombs and what was destroyed in the war was rebuilt in the 200 years that followed, so it's not just a magically intact world.

The desert, however, won't be so pretty or have access to electricity like the city does (unless you change that), so we're still in a post apocalyptia.

Got the scans from the German PC Games preview, it's pretty much the same stuff as the US preview for those of you that don't speak German, but there are some new screenshots as well:

Got some more details from next month's PC Games mag, working on getting scans, expect them in the next few days.


* The box on the first page of the preview names Bethesda as both the publisher and the developer, while the article text itself gives due credit to Obsidian and discusses the devs' work on Fallout, Fallout 2 and Van Buren.

* New California Rangers wear modified LAPD riot armor. The character in the trenchcoat from the teaser trailer has been confirmed as an NCR ranger. (can't wait to jack that armor!)

* Gun modifications will increase damage, ammo capacity, accuracy, rate of fire and more.
You will get these done by a gunsmith named Chet who owns a store in Goodsprings.


* The player can now have up to three companions in their party. :dancingcool:

* With Raul the ghoul in your party, you'll start to pick up clues that he's more than just a simple mechanic... (they didn't touch on this much, but what I've gathered from the last few previews is that the followers are going to have much deeper backstories and a larger involvement in the game.)

* deathclaws and Radscorpions are back, can't say I'm surprised... those Radscorpions are a pain in the a.ss though...

* The golf club's special VATS attack Fore! is an attack on the head, not groin, as mentioned in the last preview.

* NCR is described as large and powerful but bureaucratic.

* Chris Avellone: "It's a very amusing location design-wise. Vegas is like a whole city-wide amusement park. We can play on different themes, different styles. It's fun for the artists, it's fun for the designers... I don't know how much fun it's going to be for the programmers"



* Interview with J.E. Sawyer: "The Karma system is mostly the same as in Fallout 3, but checked less often. Mostly we rely on reputation, because that's what people know. Karma is just a general indicator of how much of a sonofab**ch you are.

If you murder people in secret, your reputation doesn't go down because no on knows you did anything, so you can maintain a good reputation but your karma has tanked really heavily.

Karma does influence some things, but reputation is usually what most people in the world base their opinions of you on."




* Interview with Chris Avellone: "We recognized that one of the strengths of Fallout 3 was that so much of the game revolved everything around Washington, D.C. That's your signature city. And to be honest, adventuring in post-apocalyptic D.C. is interesting. You're like, OK, I get it. I know what D.C. is like in the real world, I'd like to see what it's like in the real world when mutants are running around in the streets.

So, if we have a western version of Fallout 3, what's a key signature city that people will immediately get when they hear the title. And also, what's interesting to us?

So individually, Vegas came up for a number of people without a community discussion about it. That kept coming up. So we said, OK, if within this small sample group that city keeps coming up, and we understand why, that's the city to use."

The Hardcore Mode sounds really sick! This will probably be the only game I'm looking forward too. I want to know more about the soundtrack because I love the music vibe in Fallout 3.

My guess is it'll be pretty much the same. Expect 40's/50's music, with some Ratpack, Sinatra, and a bit of western twangalang thrown in there.
