I never liked Space Odyssey, Clockwork Orange
You mean 2 of the top directed movies in cinema (the fact that he has 2 is amazing)

I can see not liking the story but visually this is why I watch movies, if someone asked me that I picture a film like these 2. :agreement6:

Seventh Seal, Strawberries, and Virgin Spring are awesome no doubt about it, but you are comparing Sweden's best to one of Earths best, I agree with dude above and we never do but there is too much Hitchcock classics to even debate with you over this.

The title is about the past 30 years, if you want to turn off subject I can list several directors from or outside US that are better than Bergman last 90 years.

Actually I will

Alfred Hitchcock
Kurosawa (no explanation needed if you watch film, tell me he isn't personal and I gotta list of films waiting)
Fritz Lang
Federico Fellini
Roman Polanski

I would stick Bergman in there as a possible 5th but you are stretching his skills.
We have disagreed several times about several things... So this is no suprise.

I guess everyone who agrees with me and who's opinions I've provided are stretching his ability, and you're the one who's really got it all figured out.

Bergman was a writer, Hitch wasn't you idiot. Hitch was a director so personal themes can't be used as a measuring stick. Psycho was done in low budget as a homage to 50's B horror and in turn created the slasher genre.

Hitchcock is one of a kind, from 1925 to 1976 the man helped support the golden age of cinema.
And this has nothing to do with anything... You are simply stating your opinion here.

You made the blindly stupid and arrogant statement that Bergman himself would admit that Hitchcock was much better than him, just because that's the way you feel...

I provided you with a quote from Bergman himself proving you wrong.

And as far as not being able to make personal films because you aren't a writer... Um, Scorsese didn't actually write "Taxi Driver", "The Last Temptation Of Christ" ect., yet was very personally connected to these films... Speilberg isn't a writer, but you can't say that things like "E.T." and "Schindler's List" aren't incredibly personal to him.

So that rationale is empty.

Clint Eastwood could arguably be the best director of this decade (2000-2009):

Mystic River
Million Dollar Baby
Letters From Iwo Jima
Flags of Our Fathers
Changeling
Gran Torino
Invictus

he also had two decent movies in Space Cowboy and Blood Work.

no you didn't.. you're just trying to justify leaving Stanley Kubrick off of the list. I'm sorry to tell you but absolutely nothing can justify that. Nothing. This thread is invalid. Delete this thread now

Naw I don't think you got me correct, Bergman is a top director and I got all the respect for him, I give you props on mentioning his name which is rare on a site like this but he isn't better than Hitch, you honestly think I can't list opinions that would agree on my part?

All im doing is sparking a light movie debate, nothing serious man.

You have that backwards, I meant Hitch would admit it. No need to get upset over a light debate kid, trust me I have seen as many Bergman films as I need and I keep a nice collection, nothing blind or ignorant here.

There isn't any argument you have made in favor of Bergman > Hitch so leave that other bulls**t out of here, Schindler was personal to Spielberg but why does this matter? Is Spielberg better than Hitch, Kubrick and others because of this?

@ smoke, I'm not gonna reply again because you keep going in different directions...

First it's: "Hitchcock would take a big s**t on Bergman and he would admit that."

So either you are being the arrogant d*ck, or you are presenting Hitchcock as being one, if what you are now saying you meant is true... Which I don't believe.

Then it's you can't judge a filmmaker by whether none of their films have personal themes, because some Directors aren't writers... So I gave you serveral examples of Great Director's making personal films that they did not write...

And all of this leads back to the fact that there are like Two people in here attacking my opinion on Bergman and calling it "Absurd", even after I have supplied numerous other people that hold a similar opinion... So if there are other people who think the same as me, many of whom are very accomplised Director's in their own right, then how come my view point is being attacked?... How come it's "You are stretching his ability"?

Uh no, I'm not... You just don't happen to see it the way I do.

The simple fact that you listed "The Seventh Seal", "Wild Strawberries" and "The Virgin Spring" as being "awesome", without a single mention of "Winter Light", "Persona" and "Cries and Whispers", whom many as well as Bergman himself consider to be his Three greatest cinematic achievements... This tells me that we just don't see eye to eye when it comes to film.

So there really is no point in continuing this debate... Because everytime you bring up a point, I counter that, and you just go in a whole other direction.

It's deaded.

Nope joking he's alright but I guess since the TS could put M Night on there he could've put Oliver Stone. This thread is hilarious though . It has a lot of "opinions" clashing.

I don't consider Kubrick among the best of the LAST 30 YEARS because he's only released 3 films since 1979.

The Shining has been, and will always be, an undisputed work of genius to me.

Full Metal Jacket... eh... it's cool.

Eyes Wide Shut straight up sucks. Sorry Kubrick purists, but that is not a good movie at all.

He might not have double digit amount of movies made but every movie he has done so far in his career has been excellent.

Following
Memento
Insomnia
Batman Begins
The Prestige
The Dark Knight

all of those are great movies, while some other directors on the list may have lots of movies directed most arent great only a handful of them are.
