The Truth About Wilt Chamberlain & The 1962 Season

This isn't mine, just sort of put some of the things in lamens terms.

When looking back & analyzing NBA records the conversation will always start with the 1962 NBA season.

Here's just some of what took place during that "magical" season:

- Wilt Chamberlain averaged 50 points a game (Including his famous 100 point game).
- Oscar Robertson averaged a triple-double for the entire season.
- Walt Bellamy averaged 32 points & 19 rebounds.
- Bill Russell finished second to Wilt Chamberlain with 23.6 rebounds a game.

The shot clock had been invented just 8 years before, inevitably making the game much faster & increasing the scoring (The NBA was suffering through very low scoring & boaring games).

The NBA saw an influx of superior talent in the late 50's & early 60's, players like Wilt Chamberlain, Elgin Baylor, Jerry West, Oscar Robertson, Walt Bellamy, etc.
Forcing out the pre-shot clock era players (George Mikan, etc), guys who couldn't keep up with the new breed of athletes in a much faster paced game.

So now during the '62 season the NBA has tons & tons of talent (In their prime no less) & only 9 teams.
Imagine the NBA today with only 9 teams, every team would be stacked with multiple All-Stars.

Here's how the talent broke down that season:

- Boston Celtics (6 Hall-of-Famers)
- Philadelphia Warriors (3 Hall-of-Famers & 1 more that made an All-Star team)
- Syracuse Nationals (2 Hall-of-Famers & 3 more that made an All-Star team)
- New York Knicks (0 Hall-of-Famers, but 4 guys that made an All-Star team - 3 of them multiple times)
- Los Angeles Lakers (2 Hall-of-Famers, 4 more that made an All-Star team)
- Cincinnati Royals (2 Hall-of-Famers, 3 more that made an All-Star team)
- Detroit Pistons (1 Hall-of-Famer, 4 more that made an All-Star team)
- St. Louis Hawks (4 Hall-of-Famers, 1 more that made an All-Star team)
- Chicago Packers (1 Hall-of-Famer) - By far the worst team in the NBA that season.

Many of these teams also had multiple collegiate All-Americans that I didn't even list.

Now imagine a Mike D'Antoni Phoenix Suns team on speed, that was the NBA in the early 60's.
The Celtics averaged 124.5 points, 119.5 field goal attemps & 33.5 free throw attempts per game.
To put those ridiculous numbers in perspective compare that to the 2009 Los Angeles Lakers: 106.9 points, 85.1 field goal attempts & 25.4 free throw attempts per game.

In 1962 NBA teams averaged 118.8 points per game on 42.6% shooting, teams averaged 99.9 points per game on 45.7% shooting during the 07-08 season (I couldn't find stats for last season).

Now let's look at Wilts #'s, Wilt averaged 40 FIELD GOAL ATTEMPTS & 17 FREE THROW ATTEMPS PER GAME!!
40 years later Shaq & Kobe combined to have around same amount of attempts.

Here's a few HUGE reasons why Wilt had such a monster season & a 100 point game.

- Horrible conditioning among players made for horrible defense, the worst in NBA history.
- Lack of athletic big men to challenge Wilt (Think of Dwight Howard playing a season in the WNBA).
- Offensive goaltending was legal at the time (Meaning Wilt could (And he did many times) touch, tip, dunk the ball while it was still on the rim (Think FIBA rules).
- Something people often fail to mention about Wilt's 100 point game is that his team intentionally fouled the Knicks (The only team in the league with 0 Hall-of-Famers) despite being up double digits to get the ball back for Wilt to score & they also called timeouts late in the game despite being up 20+.

Yeah, Wilts 100 is not the greatest scoring performance of all time. He offensive goaltended and he was 7'1". Just think how easy it was to go up and grab the ball and put it in the rim with how tall he was and the other players height and and skill.

He shot 63 FG attempts! With 32 FT Attempts! That means he put the ball up around 70-80 times. Thats almost 2 shots per minute for 1 single player. 63 FG attempts hasnt even been close to touched in a game.

What I dont understand is how these teams put up so many shots and scored so many points. The defense either must had been non existent or the numbers are fake. During that game, Wilts team attempted 115 FG and shot 52 FT attempts. So roughly thats around 140 shots (when getting a shooting foul, it doesnt count as a FG attmpt). Thats about 3 shots per minute, for each team. And with Wilts team shooting 63/115 for the game, that puts the team FG pct at 54%. Thats a rediculous shooting pct for a team who shoots that many times a game. The defense must have been non existent, thus making Wilts numbers (and 100 point game) not as impressive as it looks.

I made a post about this a while back...

That 1962 season was a huge statistical anomaly when put up against other seasons. The pace played was incredibly high and that resulted in a lot of players getting inflated numbers.

Probably not even 80 or 90... Wilts other career high before he got the 100 was 78 which his team played 3 Overtimes that game.

And nobody is knocking what Wilt or any of these other greats achieved.

But when you put things into historical perspective you really have to weigh all the facts.

There really wasn't any defense at all being played back then, the NBA was desperate to gain popularity (Meaning more offense) & back then there was only one coach that handled everything.
Red Auerbach was the head coach, the a.ssistant coach, the scout, the team dentist, etc.
Teams didn't game plan for other teams or players back then.

This is off topic, but I read that Red Auerbach used to light up a victory cigar while sitting on the bench with time still left on the clock.

It's a damn shame we don't have more video evidence from that era.
