Cash wanted to bring back Matsui, but balked when Matsui wanted to also play in the field. That was the Angels selling point to Matsui, they can contend and give him the opportunity he coveted.

Johnson a.ssumes Matsui's role as "professional hitter". He hit lefties just as well as Matsui and is comfortable coming off the bench in a NL ball park or when the DH is rotated to a player that needs a day off.

I said Johnson a.ssumes Matsui's ROLE for a reason...he's not his replacement. If anything, he's Damon's replacement in the 2 slot while Granderson replaces Matsui's production in the power slots. It's a simple role reversal between our '09 OF/DH and our '10 OF/DH.

Now, I can agree with you that there were others out there like Cust, Blalock and even Johnny Gomes who could provide decent numbers while also being able to play in the field on a 1-year deal. But none of those players would be able to replicate the roles of Damon/Matsui in the lineup with Granderson as Johnson would.

You may think Granderson could have been slotted as our #2 hitter and that we should go after a power guy for the middle of the order...but to me, Grandy k's too much and has good power with a swing that is tailor made for the New Yankee Stadium.

In essence...

Defensively we upgraded with Granderson over Damon.

Offensively we a.ssumed the roles of Damon (Johnson) and Matsui (Granderson).

So in fact, we did upgrade defensively...while getting younger...and inexpensive. Why do you believe otherwise?

I dont see the negativity with nick at dh. Hes a professional hitter, sprays the ball to all fields and will greatly benefit not fielding and playing 81 games at nys. Lets see what he can do before we call him injury prone, aj pitches 30 plus games and he was labeled injury prone in years past.

Now I see where you stand. And its an understandable opinion. But I don't know where joe is right now when he wants to create the yankee lineup, but I more so believe granderson is gonna be #2 and johnson is gonna hit towards either after posada or swisher, cuz cano is not a switch hitter so its gonna be switch, left, switch, left.

And you can't say nick is goin to have a surplus year, cuz that lineup isn't gonna be as fearful after posada hitting. Cano and swisher swings at everything, melky or brett ehhhh nothin huge.

Defensively, yeah they've gotten better and I know why matsui wasn't resigned. But you gotta replace a bat like damon or matsui with that DH spot. That's just how I see it.

But again, we'll see.

Now Ken Davidoff of Newsday tweets "Hear that #Yankees have "two or three" serious trade talks for starting pitcher - A. Harang isn't one of them." FoxSports.com's Ken Rosenthal adds via Twitter "Source: Yankees in "active negotiations" for a starting pitcher. Not Harang. Trying to find out who."
Could this be related to what David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution wrote in the comments section of his blog earlier this evening?

"Got a call from a NY writer today wanting to know if I’d heard anything heating up between Yankees and Braves…. Apparently Yankees have hinted at doing “something big” soon. Don’t know if that means pitching".
If it's not about Tommy Hanson or Jair Jurrjens then Cashman is wasting his time. f**k Derek Lowe and Javier Vazquez.

Maybe Lowe, Javier Vazquez is being looked at. I doubt Javy is gonna come back.

Lowe could possibly work but the Braves would have to eat half of the 45MM left on his contract.

Damn stunna lol, u posted that right when I was in the process of posting, its all good.

I think the yankees bout to get lowe for an outfielder and cash. It just makes sense cuz the braves want a bat. And the yanks have outfielders.

Twitter.com/Bloggingbombers

Mark Feinsand, the yankees writer for the daily news

He also said the mystery pitcher the yanks want isn't zambrano as well.

Hotstove.mlb.com says the yanks will get a pitcher before January 1st...

Lol and to think Morrow was drafted right before Tim Lincecum. Traded for an injury prone reliever.

Wasn't Morrow like their Ace before King Felix? Lol.

Well Morrow is injury prone and you can never have too much bullpen. I think the M's win, even tho they got an injury prone pitcher back lol, hopefully the prospect the M's also get isn't injury prone.

The Yankees signed catcher Mike Rivera to a minor league contract, tweets Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports. Rivera had been non-tendered by the Brewers on the December 12th deadline.

Rivera, 33, hit .228/.326/.342 in 132 plate appearances this year as Jason Kendall's backup. He caught 271 innings.
Meh...Just let Cervelli backup Posada, get these scrubs out of here. Probably just be this year's version of Kevin Cash, Triple A insurance.
