David Lennon of New York Newsday reports that the Mets will submit offers to free agents Jason Bay and Bengie Molina.

Don't all line up for season tickets at once, people. It looks like the Mets prefer Bay over Matt Holliday, at least for now, probably because he'll come with a cheaper price tag. It's clear Holliday is the superior player. As for Molina, the Mets are expected to offer him a two-year deal, even if they are only bidding against themselves.
Daniel Barbarisi and Joe McDonald of the Providence Journal reports that a trade that would send third baseman Mike Lowell to the Rangers is "roughly 75 percent done."

It's inching along, anyway. There's still a number of issues at play before a deal is finalized, including Red Sox ownership signing off on the deal, medicals and an approval from major league baseball, since up to $9 million could change hands. The Red Sox are expected to acquire catcher Max Ramirez in return and pursue Adrian Beltre to play third base.
Cubs officials say they are "close" to trading outfielder Milton Bradley, with all indications saying he'll be headed to the Rays, reports Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

Could it finally happen? We've heard reports of "imminent" and "close" involving Bradley before, only to have them fall through. That said, Tampa has made the most sense all along. It's been rumored that Pat Burrell would head to Chicago to complete the trade, but Nightengale doesn't name who the Cubs would receive in return. What he does say is that the Cubs would look to sign Mike Cameron or Marlon Byrd once they shed Bradley.

LOL poor Tampa Bay. Unless Milton shuts up and puts up Texas numbers, this is a horrible trade just because he's a chemistry k!ller.

Did Tampa trade for Soriano from the Braves today? I heard some rumors, since the Braves were stunned he accepted arbitration.

yeah, trade got done today

FOXSports.com reports that reliever Rafael Soriano will sign a one-year deal with the Rays for $7 million or "slightly above."
The deal will be made official after an exchange of medical records. Owner Stuart Sternberg recently said that there's "no $7 million closer showing up," but it's funny what the winter meetings can do to a team's plans. They'll get a good one in Soriano, who posted a 2.97 ERA and 1.06 WHIP in 77 appearances in 2009. The Braves will likely acquire reliever Jesse Chavez in return.

SI.com's Jon Heyman reports arbitration-eligible reliever Rafael Soriano has been traded to the Rays.
The deal is pending a physical, which probably won't go down until Thursday or morning or afternoon. It's not yet clear who the Braves are getting in return, though right-hander Jesse Chavez's name has been thrown around. Soriano should contend for the ninth-inning job in Tampa Bay. He had a 2.97 ERA, a 1.06 WHIP and a 102/27 K/BB ratio in 75 2/3 innings this past year.

Jon Heyman of SI.com reports that the Mets offered free agent outfielder Jason Bay a four-year contract worth roughly $65 million.

Bay turned down a similar contract from the Red Sox before hitting free agency, so the Mets would likely need to kick in another year to get a deal done. Interestingly, Heyman writes that the Mets didn't want to get into "protracted talks" for Matt Holliday, who could make up to $100 million this winter. The Mets are confident that Bay's pull-hitting style will translate to Citi Field, so it looks like they've finally made their preference known. Stay tuned.

yeah, tampa traded for Soriano and tampa gave ATL the P Jesse Chavez, the dude that was in the Iwamora deal.

Soriano played it smart, he knew he wasnt gonna get a big deal cuz he's a type A free agent and if a team would've signed him, they would give up a draft pick, so he accept arbitration, and the GM cant trade arbitrated players before June 15th, unless that player gives consent. Once Soriano signed, he gave clearance and now he's a ray as the closer, he'll prolly be getting an extension before or during the season, depends on how he plays...

Sources: Yankees talking to Damon

The New York Yankees have begun contract negotiations with free agent outfielder Johnny Damon, major league sources tell ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney.

Damon

If the Yankees are unable to re-sign Damon, they are likely to look at free agents Mark DeRosa and Mike Cameron as options for their outfield, sources said.

Damon made $13 million in the final season of a four-year, $52 million deal he signed after leaving the Boston Red Sox in free agency.

New York's acquisition of center fielder Curtis Granderson from Detroit, as part of a seven-player, three-team swap that included Arizona, was finalized Wednesday.

"I don't think it affects what I can still do. Either they come out and pursue me or they don't," Damon told the New York Post. "I still know how to play baseball and will make any team better."

Damon was New York's primary left fielder in 2009 and averaged 144 games in the last four years. He hit .282 with a career-high-tying 24 home runs, 82 RBIs and 107 runs scored as the Yankees won their first World Series since 2000.

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that free agent outfielder Jason Bay has rejected the Red Sox latest contract offer and is prepared to "move on."

"We don't agree with their evaluation of the player," said Bay's agent Joe Urbon. "Frankly, we have other offers on table that are of greater interest to Jason." No word on if this was a new proposal, or the same four-year, $60 million offer previously reported. According to various reports, the Mets recently tendered a four-year, $63 million contract offer to Bay, but it is believed he is seeking an additional year.
