Additionally, in the same piece, Cafardo adds that the Sox haven't ruled out John Lackey, and are trying to keep blockbuster windows open to explore deals for Adrian Gonzalez, Miguel Cabrera, and Halladay.
although it's really nothing but still, it's just the thought of it...(don't know if it was posted either)

if they're going after a first basemen, they should pursue Cabrera, dude is obviously a beast of a hitter and he's still quite young also, and he's been playing in the AL the past 2 to 3 years, I'll say he adjusted to the AL quite nicely, since usually NL players have a hard time translating to the AL...But of course, I'll hate to see Cabrera go to the Sox lol, one of my favorite players also, Gonzalez I wouldn't have much of a problem with though lol

The Orioles are in the mix for second baseman Dan Uggla, reports MLB.com's Joe Frisaro. Since Marlins officials were late to arrive in Indianapolis, Uggla talks with various clubs did not begin until the evening. Frisaro believes Uggla will wind up in the AL, unless the Giants get him. ESPN's Buster Olney heard last night that the Giants were not close to a deal. Frisaro notes that there aren't many clubs seriously interested in Uggla.
why would the O's want a second basemen? Brian Roberts is a top quality 2nd basemen, and they just resigned him also didn't they? It'll be a good look for the Giants offensively, although they did just trade for Sanchez last year, but I guess they'll probably move him to SS(?) if this deal ever happened

Rafael Soriano gives clearance for trade

6:31pm: Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald says the Red Sox are unlikely to be suitors for Soriano. Meanwhile, David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal Constitution says the Yankees, Astros and Orioles have interest in Soriano. Braves GM Frank Wren confirmed to O'Brien that at least one team has interest in both Soriano and Derek Lowe .
I hope it wasn't the yanks that asked for lowe, it prolly was bmore. But lets get soriano for the low-low

Acquiring him for:

— Casey Fossum, the centerpiece of so many potential Red Sox deals earlier this decade. (An article in the outstanding 2009 edition of the Maple Street Press Red Sox Annual reminded me the Sox nearly spun Fossum and Shea Hillenbrand for Bartolo Colon after the 2002 season, but Boston balked, not wanting to include their prized lefty.)

Fossum's trade value ceased to be in his one Arizona season: he went 4-15 for the '04 Diamondbacks. He certainly wasn't helped by his team, which went 51-111, but let's not sell his ineptitude short "¦ only 10 of his 27 starts were Bill James-ian "Quality Starts" (at least six innings, allowing three runs or less).

Arizona traded him to Tampa for journeyman-outfielder-to-be Jose Cruz in the '04 offseason. After three seasons of 5.64 ERA baseball, the last of which was predominantly spent as a reliever, the Devil Rays released him. Fossum made 31 relief appearances for the '08 Tigers, and earlier this month was sent to the minors by the Mets.

— Brandon Lyon, one of the faces of Boston's 2003 "closer by committee" dalliance. Lyon missed the entire 2004 season to elbow surgery and threw less than 30 innings in 2005, saving 14 games despite a 6.44 ERA in 32 appearances. (Allowing six home runs will do that.)

Lyon was a better-than-average middle reliever in 2006-07, making about 70 appearances a season after Jose Valverde beat him out for the closer's job. (He threw six scoreless innings in the '07 postseason, including three perfect against Colorado in the NLCS.) With Valverde gone to Houston for 2008, Lyon got the closer spot back, only to lose it again during the year — he had a 4.70 ERA and 26 saves, but those numbers are buoyed by a 25-inning scoreless streak that covered nine weeks.

He's landed in Detroit, which you probably knew since earlier this spring, he gave up back-to-back-to-back-to-back home runs in a game against the Red Sox. It appears unlikely he'll win the closer's job.

— Jorge De La Rosa, a Triple-A pitcher at the time of the deal who never appeared for Arizona. The D'backs sent him to Milwaukee in the eight-player deal that got them Richie s3xson, and De La Rosa made his MLB debut later that year out of the bullpen.

He's since made 20-plus starts for the Royals and Rockies, who appear like they'll use him as their No. 4 starter to begin the year. All told, he's 25-31 with a 5.55 ERA in about 400 innings. Among guys who threw as many innings as he did in 2008, only seven had a higher walk rate (4.29 per nine innings).

— Michael Goss, a Single-A throw in who fell out of organized baseball after a brief stint in Double-A that season.
Highway robbery I was just thinking the other day, I couldn't remember who we gave up outside of Fossum, but clearly it was no one who we regretted giving up

I've been a big Buchholz fan, but now is the time to just deal him and whoever for Halladay. Enough is enough with this s**t. We need and answer to the Yankees acquisitions, this is bulls**t, just man up and do the f**king trade Theo. Sign Beltre and Bay, trade lowell for f**king anything, trade for Halladay, and maybe add another bat if they have the money.

ESPN.com's Buster Olney reports the Red Sox are among the teams that have expressed interest this winter in free agent Coco Crisp.

The Red Sox likely view Crisp as a utility outfielder and would benefit from having his base-stealing skills on their bench. Crisp, 30, batted .228/.336/.378 with three home runs, 14 RBI and 13 stolen bases in 180 at-bats for the Royals in 2009 before having his season cut short by dual shoulder surgeries. The White Sox are among about a half-dozen other teams who have expressed interest.
^^Why????

Jon Heyman of SI.com writes that the Yankees are still interested in free agent John Lackey and Roy Halladay of the Blue Jays.

The Yankees won't show any mercy, even after acquiring Curtis Granderson and re-signing Andy Pettitte over the past 24 hours. According to Heyman, the Blue Jays asked for prospect catcher Miguel Montero plus Joba Chamberlain or Phil Hughes and more in exchange for Halladay. If the Red Sox won't part with Clay Buchholz or Casey Kelly for Halladay, they are unlikely to get quite that much from the bombers. With the contract handed out to Randy Wolf, John Lackey is looking better by the minute.
Joe Capozzi of the Palm Beach Post reports that the Marlins are close to sending reliever Matt Lindstrom to the Astros.

Lindstrom, 29, is arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter, so the Marlins would like to shed his potential $1.5 million salary for 2010. They are expected to receive prospects in return. Lindstrom dealt with some elbow issues in 2009, posting a 5.89 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and 39/24 K/BB ratio over 47 1/3 innings.

According to Steve Henson of Yahoo! Sports, the Yankees aren't yet satisfied with their outfield and are still in on Matt Holliday.

So much for cost-cutting. If the Yanks do land Holliday, it's safe to a.ssume either Melky Cabrera or Nick Swisher will be traded, and perhaps both. Holliday, 29, finished with a .313/.394/.515 batting line in 2009 with 24 home runs and 104 RBI. He would be an a.sset to any team. Agent Scott Boras is reaching for the stars in negotiations, though, comparing him at one point to Mark Teixeira, who inked an eight-year, $180 million contract last winter.

Rich Harden close to signing with the Rangers for 1-year, $7.5mil

Free-agent right-hander Rich Harden is close to signing a one-year contract with the Rangers, according to a major-league source.

The deal, valued at $7.5 million according to published reports, qualifies as one of the biggest surprises of the winter meetings.

and how are we disrespectful? because we traded him and want him back? did we hurt his feelings?
