The Knicks spent nearly all day and night with Grant Hill on Monday, ending it with a
contract offer.

The New York Post is reporting that the offer is for one-year and is worth a portion of the
club's mid-level exception.

"We think we have a chance, but you never know," a team source said of landing the
free-agent forward.

Hill has been linked to the Suns and Celtics as well.

"You want to have players who've had a lot of success before so they can show the other
players how to do it," Knicks president Donnie Walsh told The Post. "That's the kind of
player we want to bring in."
The Knicks could look to get a point guard out of a sign-and-trade for forward David Lee.

Lee is a restricted free agent and only the Trail Blazers can afford to sign him outright.
However, Portland doesn't appear willing to give him $10 million to serve as LaMarcus Aldridge's
backup.

The Blazers also believe that the Knicks would match a lower offer.

Portland is interested in a sign-and-trade and has discussed scenarios with agent Mark
Bartelstein. The proposed deals have included Steve Blake and Travis Outlaw.
According to an executive whose team is interested in David Lee, Lee's agent Mark
Bartelstein is seeking $12 million per season for his client.

The Knicks have yet to make a formal offer but hope to re-sign the forward to a deal
averaging between $7 million and $8 million per season.

"So many people are throwing so much stuff out there, it's not something I would ever talk
about publicly," Bartelstein said about negotiations.

Howard Beck of the New York Times described Bartelstein as sounding frustrated that a deal
was not done yet.

"It's a shame David's not done yet. The Knicks have the ability to get him signed. The other
teams don't, because they don’t know if the Knicks will match or not, or go through a
sign-and-trade," Bartelstein said.

The Knicks may not be interested in being part of a sign-and-trade deal for Lee unless they
receive a significant talent back.
The Knicks are in the driver's seat with David Lee. Only Portland is far enough under the cap
to sign Lee and is hesitant to offer him $10 million a year. Walsh can match any offer. Agent
Mark Bartelstein is talking to several teams about sign-and-trades, but the Knicks aren't that
interested. "We haven't gotten to a workable place," Walsh said. "We wanted to see if an offer
was coming in and I don't know if there will be." Robinson could be in the same boat despite
drawing interest from the Lakers, Magic, Bulls, Trail Blazers and Kings. -- NY Post
The Knicks offered free-agent forward Grant Hill two contract options during a meeting in New
York earlier this week.

According to sources, the Knicks offered Hill the option of a one-year, $5 million deal or a
three-year, $10 million deal.

Hill said last week that he wants to be "fairly compensated" after finishing a two-year, $3.8
million contract with the Suns.

The Knicks became aggressive in their pursuit of Hill once Jason Kidd came off the market.
yea Lee's agent is crazy, but he's just doing his job.

its simple negotiation, he sets the bar at 12 mil and negotiates down to the original 10 that Lee wanted.

Walsh has played his cards so right to this point. Drafting Hill and trading for Darko gave the Knicks the upper hand in negotiations. Not to mention the patience being displayed in letting the market dictate Lee's true value.

i think Lee will be retained for about 8 mil or so

In addition to the announcement of the 2009-10 salary cap, NBA teams received tentative
projections from the league office warning that the cap is estimated to drop to somewhere
between $50.4 million and $53.6 million for the 2010-11 season.

The official league memorandum, obtained by ESPN.com, forecasts a dip in basketball-related
income in the 2009-10 season of 2.5 percent to 5 percent, which threatens to take the
2010-11 cap down some $5 million to $8 million from last season's $58.7 million salary
cap.
good luck with your 12-10 mill Mr. Lee
these salary cap implications obviously effect the Knicks plan for 2 Max-FA's in 2010. but how much exactly will it effect?

here's a post from one of the most respected and intelligent posters on the Knicks RealGM Boards...hes an expert on the salary cap.

Good news and bad news. A double-edged sword I'd say.

If the salary cap drops to $50.4 million, the possibility of signing two max free agents almost becomes a fantasy (unless Walsh gets rid of both Curry and Jeffries for expiring contracts) but if the salary cap drops to $50.4 million then the luxury tax threshold drops to $61.2 million and that's where Dolan will be an a.sset. Free agents know we won't hesitate to pay the tax to build a winner. Even if they have the possibility to sign two max contracts, no team will do it because it means they will pay the tax for the next 5 or 6 years.

If the salary cap drops below $55 million and Lebron resigns with the Cavs for 6 years, his max contract would look like this :
2010-2011 : $16,568,908
2011-2012 : $18,308,643
2012-2013 : $20,048,370
2013-2014 : $21,788,113
2014-2015 : $23,527,849
2015-2016 : $25,267,584
-------------------------------
TOTAL : $125,509,475

Now let's look at the possibility to sign two max contracts, you only have to multiply by 2 :
2010-2011 : $33,137,815
2011-2012 : $36,617,286
2012-2013 : $40,096,756
2013-2014 : $43,576,227
2014-2015 : $47,055,698

By year 3, two max contracts would eat $40 million of your cap so you'd have to fill the rest of your roster with minimum players if you don't want to pay the tax. No way the Cavs can offer two max contracts. Not to mention they have several free agents other than Lebron toresign in 2010. And Varejao already decided to opt out.

If the luxury tax drops to $61.2 million then no team will offer two max contracts because of the uncertainty of the future, they know they may not afford to pay two max contracts in year 2, 3 or 4.

Basically only the Knicks can offer two max contracts and remain competitive because Dolan will accept to pay the tax (even if we're $20 million over the threshold), we will still use the MLE in the future, we will still extend the contracts of our rookies, etc. We don't have to worry about the luxury tax if we sign two max free agents.
For any other team, signing two max contracts would be a pretty dangerous proposition and they couldn't sustain it.

As I said it's a double edged sword. On one hand it kinda forces Walsh to trim more payroll if he wants to sign two max contracts but on another hand the fact that we're willing to pay the tax could be a great a.sset and we could be the only team willing to sign two max free agents in 2010.

About the luxury tax dropping, even if we can't land two max free agents, some teams (maybe the Hornets with Chris Paul) may look to trade their best players for immediate cap relief and young players/picks. We could send them a trade exception and Wilson Chandler/Jordan Hill for example. Or we could take some of their bad contracts then we would not give picks/youth in return.

Our salary cap flexibility in 2010 will be an a.sset no matter what happens. There will be lots of opportunities out there.
