Mets' Santos likely starter next season

Omir Santos is the front-runner to return as the Mets' starting catcher next season, almost by default as much as performance.

The scorecard reads like this: Brian Schneider almost certainly will not be re-signed, and rookie Josh Thole still has to prove he belongs in the big leagues. The free-agent crop could include Bengie Molina, Ramon Hernandez and Yorvit Torrealba, then there is a drop-off.

"The market, there is not going to be a lot out there in terms of catcher this year," Schneider said before the Mets' 5-2 loss to Atlanta last night at Citi Field. "I wish I could have had a better year going into free agency, but I didn't. I'm not going to sit here and harp and try to find reasons why or excuses. It just happened."

Beltran looking to end career with Mets

MIAMI -- Carlos Beltran's current is contract is up after the 2011 season, but the All-Star center fielder wants to finish his career with the Mets and thinks he can still play at least six more years.

Doing the math, that sounds like Beltran wants a contract extension after proving his toughness to the Mets this month with a surprisingly successful comeback from a bone bruise in his right knee.

Beltran told The Post here before last night's 9-6 loss to the Marlins that -- while he won't personally approach GM Omar Minaya about an extension this winter -- he has made it clear to Minaya that he wants to stay beyond 2011 and will "let my agent deal with that."

It'll be tough to cut his pay, given his production over his time in Queens...but he will be older and the economy is different than when he first signed, so I would imagine it's not out of the question.

Reyes tears hamstring, making surgery highly likely

WASHINGTON - With Jose Reyes trying to return from a torn right hamstring tendon, which had kept him on the disabled list since May 26, the Mets revealed late Wednesday that the All-Star shortstop suffered a tear of the hamstring itself during a running workout on Tuesday.

Reyes had complained of discomfort in the leg and was examined Wednesday at the Hospital for Special Surgery, where an MRI showed the new injury. The Mets did not specify the severity, but even a partial tear can take eight to 10 weeks to heal, while a complete tear may require three to six months.

Question: Is Nick Evans still on the Mets?

Nick Evans, who is 25 years old and on a team with 91 losses, and who has not played in more than a week, has just 20 at bats since being added to the roster 37 days ago.

In a report for MLB.com, Jerry Manuel said of Evans and playing time:

“We are in a situation where we are somewhat forced to bring people up, probably quicker than we would have liked… and he is probably one of those guys that we probably pushed a little too early, and then when you do that it appears that his stock has fallen, but it hasn’t.”

I heard this "no limits on expanding payroll" story before...then before I knew it, Mets brass was convincing itself that Luis Castillo was worth giving another chance and balking at even a shot at Manny or any other outfielder...

well last yr when I did my minor league hot sheet I had Ike Davis Mejia Niese and Nick Evans on it 3/4 are not on the team contributing so I decided to do it again

This guy is a couple years away, but hes pretty much our #1 prospect

Wilmer Flores: Position: SS My Projected Major League Position for Him: OF

Here are his stats thru 29 games hes repeating A Ball in Savannah

Stats
AVG:
.328
HR:
5
RBI:
25
SB:
1

Hes starting to hit for good power this year after now displaying much last year. The power was never a concern since he hasn't filled out his body yet hes 6-3 and hes 175 and pretty slow footed he can be 225 easily. He has 12 doubles 2 triples and 5 home runs in 129 at bats he had 20 doubles 2 triples 3 home runs all of last year in 488 at bats so the progression is obvious.

Next guy on my list I am 100% guaranteeing he will be on the major league roster some point next year even though he is only in A+ is

Reese Havens Position: SS
My Major League Position for Him: 2B

He was injured last year and the beginning of this year so here are his stats

AVG:
.308
HR:
2
RBI:
6
SB:
0

Thru 9 games. Hes batting leadoff right now for St Lucie hes likely the replacement for Castillo and should bat #2 in our line up behind Reyes. I know Reyes is batting 3rd right now, but that won't last. Pitching is kind of thin for us right now because Niese and Mejia are in the majors right now. We will draft a pitcher in the draft though so don't expect that to last long and we have a top pick.

I'm not really a big Fernando Martinez fan and hes injured again hes been injured every season so far.

Reese Havens now has 8 home runs in 100 at bats

5 in AA he hit 2 tonight after having another 2 home run night the other night

3 from A+ he's going to try and force the Mets hand. With Tejada in AA expect Havens to get a Triple-A call soon.

BALTIMORE -- A player who is friendly with Roy Oswalt says the Astros right-hander would "definitely" accept a trade to the Mets if they remain in the playoff hunt.

But the fact Oswalt is still owed about $30 million through 2011 makes it extremely unlikely the Mets would pursue him.

The player who is friendly with Oswalt said the right-hander likes the veteran fiber of the Mets.

Much can change between now and the July 31 non-waiver trading deadline, but manager Jerry Manuel indicated he isn't campaigning for the Mets to add a starting pitcher.

Manuel pointed to the fact Nos. 4 and 5 starters, R.A. d*ckey and Hisanori Takahashi, are a combined 9-2.

"You can't get any better than that," Manuel said. "You're actually in pretty good shape. At 9-2, I don't care who you go out and get, that's going to be tough to [equal]."

Chris Carter still doesn't have the ball commemorating his first career home run, but he has the second.

The lefty slugger yesterday homered in his second start of the weekend as the Mets' designated hitter, helping his team roll to an 11-4 victory over the Orioles.

Carter's three-run homer against Kevin Millwood in the first inning gave the Mets a 5-0 lead. He also hit a three-run homer on Friday.

The Mets retrieved Carter's ball yesterday. On Friday, the fan who caught Carter's first home run rejected an offer of autographed baseballs from David Wright, Jose Reyes and Francisco Rodriguez and an autographed bat from Carter in exchange for the ball. The fan also wanted signed items from the Orioles, and the Mets declined to pursue the matter.

Carter figures to remain the DH in Cleveland, where the Mets are scheduled to face three righties.
*
John Maine threw 63 pitches in a rehab start for Double-A Binghamton at Trenton and allowed one hit over four shutout innings. Maine said he expects to throw 80-90 pitches in a rehab start on Friday before returning to the Mets.
*
Carlos Beltran had the day off in Port St. Lucie as he continues the rehab on his right knee. There is almost no possibility, according to a club source, that Beltran will begin a minor-league rehab this week.
