leg extensions activate the quads in an uneven manner and cause alignment issues that can cause knee problems..... in short dont do them too often/at all


if you wanna strengthen your "knees" you have to stabilize/strengthen the muscles around the knee because there is no way you will improve the ligaments or internal structures........ that being said, you should work your way up from basic body weight exericses (step ups, squats, reverse lunge, hamstring plank etc....) and make sure you use good form... you should start small and build a solid foundation b4 you start hitting heavier exercises like weighted squats and deads

but anyway, do leg extentions at a 45 degree angle. most people do them at 90 degree angles and it puts too much strain on your knee cap eventally one day they will crack and you cant walk straight anymore. if youre on a leg extention machine go half way up and come back down DO NOT GO ALL THE WAY UP. when you go halfway you can use more weight and it will be less strain on your knees without all the jerking when you lift your legs all the way up straight. the highest i would reccommend you lift your legs up is 60 angle.
