Klitschko-Haye looks set!

By Alexey Potapov

WBO/IBF/IBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (52-3, 46 KOs) will next f!ght against former WBC/WBA/WBO cruiserweight champion David Haye (22-1, 22 KOs). Representatives of Klitschko have informed f!ghtnews.com that Klitschko-Haye will take place on June 20th in Germany. The contract is expected to be signed in the next few days.

Previously it was planned to stage the Klitschko-Haye f!ght in London at Stamford Bridge Stadium, which is home to Chelsea Football Club.

Chris Arreola (26-0, 23 KOs), who was considered as a possible challenger for Wladimir Klitschko in a case of refusal David Haye, may end up challenging WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (37-2, 36 KOs) at Staples Center in Los Angeles. For this to take place, it’s necessary for him to win on April 11th against Jameel McCline (39-9, 23 KOs) at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas

Klitschko, Haye reach deal!

Months of negotiations have come to an end and the highly expected heavyweight f!ght is determined: IBF, WBO and IBO world champion Wladimir Klitschko will defend his titles against Briton David Haye on June 20. Bernd Bönte, Managing Director of Klitschko Management Group: “I am glad that these extremely difficult and long negotiations are over and we are able to present the f!ght that boxing fans all over the world want to see. Both Wladimir and David are known as superb punchers and a f!ght over 12 rounds will be very unlikely to happen. It is going to be an unforgettable spectacle. The venue of the f!ght will be announced soon.“

Both opponents met several times at public events before showing their rivalry. Especially the 28-year-old Haye used every possibility to attack Klitschko. Recently, he posed with Wladimir’s cut off head in an English lifestyle magazine.

Wladimir Klitschko: “I am used to being attacked by my opponents before a f!ght. But David is top of the list of crudity. He has to pay the bill for it and I promise it will be painful.“

David Haye: “Klitschko’s last opponents were cowards. I will knock him out and take his belts to my hometown London. And that is not all: I will also go and get Vitali’s belt! None of them can stop me. The new World Heavyweight Champion will soon be David Haye!“

David “The Hayemaker“ Haye was the dominating figure in the cruiserweight division of the last years holding the WBC, WBA and WBO titles. Both of his first two heavyweight f!ghts Haye won without going the full distance. Last November he stopped former world title challenger Monte Barrett in round 5. Haye’s impressive record is 22 wins (21 by KO) and one defeat only.

It is Wladimir Klitschko’s 16th world heavyweight championship f!ght. Klitschko was the first after nine years who unified heavyweight titles last year. The Olympic gold medalist of Atlanta 1996 has a record of 52 wins (46 by KO) with three defeats.

The f!ght will be broadcast worldwide. In Germany, the hosting channel will be RTL, HBO will show the f!ght in the US and Setanta covers in England.

Haye f!ghts the way a person needs to, if they are gonna beat Wlad. The only thing is, does Haye have the chin (or defense) to walk through (or past) Wlad's offense? Does he have the stamina to keep up the offense, and keep chasing Wlad?

The best example I can use is Hatton. Hatton vs. Collazo specifically. Hatton fought his f!ght, the entire match... but then, he tired out badly in the later rounds. Hatton didn't have the stamina to f!ght his f!ght for 12 rounds.

I dunno if Haye has the stamina or chin to f!ght his own f!ght either.

Klitschko Haye Tickets Going Fast!

New York, April 18—Waiting on a long line that was seemingly “a mile long,” according to Bernd Bönte, Managing Director of Klitschko Management Group, German f!ght fans purchased 30,000 tickets for the Wladimir Klitschko vs. David Haye world heavyweight champ ionship f!ght on the first day of sales today.

Wladmir will put his IBF, WBO and IBO belts on the line against the number two ranked Haye on June 20. The Schalke Stadium, a soccer venue, has a capacity of 60,000. “We are absolutely sure that the f!ght will be sold out very soon,” said Boente..

The Veltins-Arena is the home field of German Bundesliga 04 Soccer Team.

“I always wanted to f!ght in a soccer stadium in front of such a big crowd. Now, this dream comes true,” said Klitschko. “Once I attended a Schalke match myself and since then I have not forgotten these fantastic fans that supported their team constantly for 90 minutes. I am sure June 20 will be an unforgettable night for all of us.”

The f!ght will be broadcast worldwide. In Germany hosting channel will be RTL, HBO will broadcast the f!ght in the US and Setanta covers in the UK.

Klitschko, who hails from Kiev, Ukraine and f!ghts out of Germany, has a ring record of 52-3, with 46 victories coming by way of knockout. Haye, who is a native of London, England, has a 22-1 record with 21 KO’s.

by James Slater - Today, on Setanta Sports, footage was shown of heavyweight title challenger David Haye being put through his paces in his Cyprus training camp as he gets himself in top shape for his June date with IBF and WBO king Wladimir Klitschko. Looking fantastic, Haye was seen slamming a hammer into a huge tractor tyre and he was also seen preparing himself on how to deal with "Dr Steel Hammer's" long left jab.

Smiling as he did do, Haye worked out with the aid of a long poll with a glove on the end - slipping and blocking the over the top replica of Klitschko's telephone poll of a left hand. Haye may have been having some fun as the cameras rolled, but he has been going about his training in a deadly serious manner.

Speaking to Setanta Sports News, "The Hayemaker" acknowledged that he must be at his absolute best on June 20th, better than he's ever been in fact..

"I'm just going to go out there and be the best I can be," Haye said. "I can't focus on what he's going to do, he always does what he does. He's a very defensive f!ghter. He's 6'7," he's eighteen stone. He's a big guy. He looks like Ivan Drago from Rocky IV. He looks the part. He shapes up the part.

"He hasn't got the heart I've got. I've been telling people since the age of three I'm going to be the heavyweight champion of the world and here's my chance. This is it. This is the big one."

Haye may have been having a little fun with the mock Klitschko jab, but in all seriousness the former cruiserweight champ admits the weapon is one to feel concerned about.

"His advantages are arm length and his height," Haye said. "I can't afford to stand on the outside of his punches getting jabbed in the face like a lot of his opponents do. So I've got to f!ght a little bit more like Mike Tyson in this f!ght. [Normally] I've got a Lennox Lewis style with the long jab and the right hand. I'm the small guy now.

"I'm the small man in the f!ght. I've got to work twice as hard. I've got to get twice as close. I've got to be twice as good as I've ever been."

The Million dollar question, of whether or not Haye CAN get past the defending champion's left jab, will be answered in less than a month's time!

Emanuel Steward: “Wladimir Klitschko would knock Haye out within four rounds”

by Geoffrey Ciani - This past week’s edition of On the Ropes Boxing Radio featured an exclusive interview with Hall of Fame trainer Emanuel Steward who is best known for his work with Tommy Hearns and Lennox Lewis. Steward also currently trains reigning unified heavyweight champion of the world Wladimir Klitschko who recently stopped “Fast” Eddie Chambers by twelfth round knockout. Emanuel spoke about a variety of topics, including Wladimir’s performance against Chambers, a potential f!ght between Wladimir and David Haye, and the upcoming mega f!ght between Shane Mosley and Floyd Mayweather Junior. Here are some excerpts from that interview:

On his a.ssessment of how he rates Klitschko’s performance against Chambers:
“I give him a B. It was a B. It was a good performance. It could have been better because of what his ability is compared to what he did, but it was still good. He went out and did what he was asked to do and he got the knockout. Chambers isn’t the easiest guy to f!ght, either. He spends his time mostly about, like 80% on the defensive mental mode—covering up, running away, hands over his head. It was very difficult to f!ght guys like that especially when you have a guy like Wladimir who’s a really technical, super intelligent, thinking f!ghter himself. So I had to do what I had to do the last two rounds to just try to push him out of his regular mode and he got really upset and all emotional and anxiety and then he went out and performed, but it was something I had to do. That’s my job as a trainer—to do what I have to do to get my f!ghter to get the best performance and I appreciate the fact that he did respond and he went and did what he was supposed to do..”

His views on Klitschko going forward:
“I think based on this performance here and his own conversations with me in the recent days that he realizes that he is actually too reluctant, too intelligent, too technical—that I think you’re going to see a much more aggressive f!ghter in Wladimir. If this man actually would just operate with close to 80%—he’s only operating with about 60%—he would be the most devastating heavyweight in the history of boxing because I’ve worked with him. Never, ever, ever have I been involved with a f!ghter who has so much one punch punching power. Even guys that knock somebody out—they get them hurt, they knock them down, they get them groggy—Wladimir is the only f!ghter I’ve ever worked with that everything can be normal like a big party—everybody is having champagne, on the floors, in the tuxedos, with the music—and the lights go off completely at one time. I mean it’s not like a gradual dimmer switch. I never saw anyone who knocked out people in a gym when they block punches and he did that about three weeks ago with a sparring partner—two weeks ago, prior to the f!ght. With a sparring partner he threw a left hook, the sparring partner blocked the punch and with twenty ounce gloves he was still knocked out. He has unbelievable one punch punching power and that’s why maybe he doesn’t put combinations together because he punches so effectively and with so much power with one punch, but his handicap and problem is he feints too much. He wants everything to be perfect—perfect balance, perfect this, and the last round he was a little overly aggressive, got out of position a few times, but to go three minutes with a guy with his power is like a lifetime because even if he just grazes you with a punch, you’re going to be hurt.”

His views on Wladimir’s punching power:
“What makes him really special also is he has so much power in the late rounds. A lot of guys, great punchers like (Mike) Tyson, they were great in the early rounds but very seldom in the late rounds. Wladimir has knocked out guys like he did with Chris Byrd, and (Ray) Austin, and Eliseo Castillo—he knocked those guys out early because he threw a punch early, an early power punch. And then he’s had the power to go out after being down three times with Sam Peter and he had him out on his feet in the twelfth round of a very grueling f!ght with one single punch, a left hook. Then he knocked out Thompson. With Tony Thompson he ran across the ring and threw one straight right hand in the eleventh round and just walked away, and Thompson went down totally finished. Now he knocks out this guy in the twelfth round with ten or twelve seconds left with one punch. To have a f!ghter that has that kind of devastating one punch clean knockout power is so much stress on the opponent because you’re never safe.”

On a potential f!ght between Klitschko and David Haye:
“I would love to see that f!ght because David Haye and Wladimir Klitschko are the only two heavyweights that have explosive power—speed and one punch punching power. If they ever f!ght, because I don’t know if David wants the f!ght. He became a big name only by bragging about what he would do the Klitschkos, and drawing cartoon characters and cutting off heads and putting them on t-shirts—but he has never fought a quality heavyweight or did anything. He became a big celebrity just by talking about what he would do to a Klitschko and then he ran away from both f!ghts. Nevertheless, he still is a very hot guy to f!ght as far as I’m concerned, and I still like the idea of him and Wladimir because they both have tremendous explosive punching power and speed.”

On whether he believes people are counting out Shane Mosley in his May 1 showdown with Floyd Mayweather Junior:
“Oh definitely. I have Mosley and Mayweather a dead even f!ght. The one good thing is that Shane is, first of all, to me is the first really live physical match-up f!ght that I think that really that Floyd has fought in about five or six years. I mean I looked at (Arturo) Gatti—I’m not trying to knock Gatti—Gatti was a good f!ght when he fought another brawler or another guy on his level who was exciting, but anytime he stepped up and fought class boxers he always lost because he could never deal with intelligent f!ghters. Oscar, you know, f!ghts with Floyd and I cannot believe how he fought such a f!ght not using his talent, but nevertheless, people forget it was a split decision because Oscar was still just tall enough to use the jab in the early part and that bothered Floyd because Floyd’s defense of just rolling his shoulders and bending back is okay if you got small guys, but guys who have long enough arms to reach over and hit him he had to really f!ght with them and that was only a split decision. Shane matches up with him in size as a full welterweight and also Shane has good speed—maybe not as fast as Floyd but there’s not that much of a disparity. I think the intensity and the challenge that Shane brings into this f!ght is going to make Floyd Mayweather show his greatness or he could totally be dominated and look very inferior. He won’t be anywhere in between, he’ll go to one extreme or the other and I think that Shane may be the dark horse so to say in this whole situation because he could easily be a big threat and possibly beat Floyd and (Manny) Pacquiao. Shane is an old school f!ghter who f!ghts with a lot of intensity, has speed, has shown a good chin and he’s going to be very well prepared. I just think that this is going to be maybe one of the best f!ghts in a long time but I think this is the f!ght that will make Floyd Mayweather show his greatness or show his weakness—because he won’t be in between. He must f!ght in this f!ght.”

On how he would go about training Mosley if he were Mosley’s trainer in his f!ght with Mayweather:
“Well I think he’s got a very good trainer working with him now in Naseem Richardson and he will need to jab and apply a lot of pressure but not necessarily when Floyd bends back, beating all along his elbows and the ribs throwing a lot of wasted punches which Oscar did. The biggest thing that will be a problem for Floyd is the jab—pressure, jab, pressure, jab, and once you get inside, then you throw punches because Shane is just big enough where his arms are long enough and he’s tall enough where he would have a problem avoiding Shane’s punches by just rolling his shoulder and sticking his head back to the ropes. But the thing that goes for Floyd is Floyd has good hand speed but he also has good foot speed, too, and Shane is really not known for his footwork. Floyd can move around, stop on a dime, punch in and out, catlike reflexes—maybe not throw the volume of punches that Shane throws, but he’s a very, very accurate pinpoint puncher and he has ability to move and change directions a lot. A slight edge would go to Mayweather because of the foot speed and the pinpoint accurate punches, but I think that Shane will, even though Floyd may have that advantage over him in those areas, I think Shane is still fast enough and has enough intensity and anger in him that he’s still going to force Mayweather to bring him out of his comfort zone and make him really have to sit there and show his greatness, and if he does—maybe what he’s been saying is, he’s one of the greatest welterweight f!ghter of all time even though he won’t f!ght a welterweight. So this is the first time he’s really f!ghting a really world class welterweight f!ghter.”

On which f!ght he believes fans would enjoy more—Mosley vs. Pacquiao or Mayweather vs.Pacquiao:
“Mosley-Pacquiao or Mayweather-Pacquiao? Mosley-Pacquiao, Mosley-Pacquiao, Mosley-Pacquiao. I mean you know that Shane is going to bring it to you, I mean that’s him. There’s no way he’s going to run from anybody or try to be technical and if things get rough he’s still going to f!ght. Even in his losses to basically Winky Wright, who he had no business f!ghting because he was physically way too big, and Vernon Forrest, which was a tall rangy type guy and I know he lost to (Miguel) Cotto but I won’t even go into this because that was a close f!ght—but still, there’s no way you’re going to get anything but pure explosive excitement with Pacquiao and Mosley. But the f!ght based on the hype, the interest, and the hunger of the fans is still Mayweather and Pacquiao, but the true, true really explosive f!ght that the true f!ght fans would look forward to would be with Shane Mosley and Pacquiao. But still, the media and the press and everybody is going to make the f!ght if it’s possible with Pacquiao and Mayweather because of the anticipation and the marquee value and all of the hype—but the pure, pure f!ght is with Shane Mosley.”

His views on the upcoming f!ght between David Haye and John Ruiz:
“I pick David to win because everything is going in his direction now with the speed and youth, but if I was a betting person I would have it like 6:5 that’s all, or 7:5. I don’t know how odds go because I never bet on a f!ght but I see it as that type of f!ght. It’s his home town, his area, his crowd—the momentum and movement and everything is with him, but still, Ruiz is a solid f!ghter, he’s a real heavyweight not a super heavyweight, he has a good chin and I don’t know that David has all of the gifted movements and the great coordination like Roy Jones had to stay for twelve rounds and move and not get hit, because the biggest problem I have with him is just his chin. When he got knocked down by Monte Barrett I said, ‘Oh my God’. So that’s the situation. A lot of people believe that he is going to go out and just blow Ruiz away, and maybe he will—I wish that that would happen—but I have him a slight favorite and that’s about it.”

On how he sees a f!ght between Wladimir Klitschko and David Haye going should it happen:
“Well Wladimir would knock him out within four rounds because this is one of the few guys who Wladimir has a lot of animosity I guess and anger and he would be extremely aggressive very much like he was with Chris Byrd in their second f!ght, but I think until it happens—the knockout or whatever, which I think will happen within four rounds—it would be a very explosive exciting f!ght. You got two guys who are known for explosive punching power, great speed, and both of them reputedly got weak chins so it would be a great excitement f!ght. But I think that Wladimir’s size and a strong left jab would be too much in addition to the fact that Wladimir has that tremendous short punching power with both the left hand and the right hand. I think that would be a little too much for David to overcome, but in the meantime, he has the ability to knockout Wladimir if he can catch him, too, because he does punch hard and he does punch fast and he does punch freely. As soon as he gets into range he will let his punches go. He doesn’t hesitate, so it’s a f!ght as a fan I would love to see.”

Klitschko: "I Will Enjoy Giving David Haye a Pizza Face"

By Mark Vester & Thomas Schlabe

WBO/IBF/IBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko is hoping to get his hands on WBA champ David Haye, who defends his title on April 3 against mandatory challenger John Ruiz. Klitschko hopes Haye is able to pull through so the two of them can unify the title belts. He is tired of f!ghting with Haye through the press and wants to get down to business in the ring.

"Let's finish the talk. It's just getting dumb. I think it's disrespectful to fans. I think the fans of Great Britain want to see this f!ght. Let's make this f!ght," Klitschko said to BoxingScene.com.

Klitschko doesn't believe Haye's excuses for withdrawing from their f!ght that was scheduled last year. Haye said he suffered an back injury during training but then the British champion withdrew from a scheduled f!ght with Wladimir's older brother Vitali Klitschko. Haye didn't like the contract terms in the Vitali f!ght but Wladimir says the contract terms were the same for both f!ghts. Wladimir is angry with all of the postponements and wants to batter Haye in the ring by giving him a pizza face.

"Why didn't he f!ght Vitali? The conditions were the same. I'm very upset about many things. Maybe there was a back injury and maybe there wasn't but there are things that make me suspicious. If I get him in the ring, I told you guys already that I will enjoy the process. He says I do a 'jab, jab, grab.' Well, he's going to eat a lot of jabs. He's going to get a pizza face first, and then I'm going to take him out in the late rounds. I will enjoy the process," Klitschko said.

Wladimir Klitschko-David Haye is Heading To Germany

[pic - click to view]

By Ruslan Chikov

According to reports in the Russian press, the unification between heavyweight champions Wladimir Klitschko and David Haye is probably going to take place in Germany rather than England.

Klitschko's trainer Emanuel Steward has been talking about a September f!ght date. Golzka reports the f!ght is being discussed for the month of November. Last weekend in Las Vegas, Klitschko's adviser Shelly Finkel and Haye's co-promoter Golden Boy Promotions had positive discussions with American cable network HBO. The proposed f!ght date will have to work for HBO, German network RTL and the cable network carrying the event in England.

According to a report in Golzka, negotiations are going very well to make the heavyweight unification f!ght between champions Wladimir Klitschko and David Haye. Golzka reports that during the Mayweather-Mosley weekend in Las Vegas, Klitschko's adviser Shelly Finkel and Haye's co-promoter Golden Boy Promotions spoke with cable network HBO about the financial details of the f!ght and the scheduling. The talks were reported to have gone very well and the negotiations will continue to move forward.

Klitschko's trainer Emanuel Steward believes the f!ght may happen in September. The date will depend on the availability of a venue and the cable networks. The venue date has to work for three cable networks, located in the United States, Germany and England.

Klitschko Says There is No Reason David Haye Can't f!ght

By Ruslan Chikov

The champion of the WBO/IBF/IBO, Wladimir Klitschko says there is no justification for David Haye to avoid their f!ght. In an interview with Today, Klitschko said the f!ght would happen in the fall, between September to November and there will be a rematch clause in the contract. The f!ght appears to be taking place in Germany, but Klitschko does not rule out the chance of f!ghting in England.

The f!ght will lead Klitschko on the road to f!ght IBF mandatory contender Alexander Povetkin. The IBF has given Klitschko additional time to make a unification f!ght with Haye, the WBA champion.

"The IBF has given us still some time to complete negotiations. A purse bid [for Alexander] can only be ordered once the situation with Haye is finished. We have a couple of weeks to negotiate with him and either we'll agree or we won't agree," Klitschko said.

"Unifying the titles is always a priority for any of the boxing organizations. It is written in their rules. They gave me the green light, and Haye got the green light. Haye has permission to make a voluntary defense. This time there is nothing to prevent Haye from f!ghting me."

The IBF has agreed to allow Klitschko-Haye with the winner to face official challenger Alexander Povetkin (19-0, 14 KOs). Team Povetkin will hold a press conference tomorrow in Moscow.

Haye Wants Vitali, Wladimir-Povetkin as Deadline Nears

By Ruslan Chikov

Only a few days before the IBF's deadline of May 17 to make a unification f!ght between champion Wladimir Klitschko and WBA champion David Haye of England. The IBF gave the f!ghters until May 17 to make a deal or else Klitschko has to f!ght mandatory Alexander Povetkin or face being stripped if he refuses.

Haye's co-promoter Chris Meyer of Sauerland Event spoke with Russian reporter Alexander Pavlovu of SportBox and said he didn't think the deal would get done by the deadline and Haye was more interested in f!ghting older brother Vitali Klitschko, the WBC champion, who defends against Albert Sosnowksi of Poland on May 29.

"I have this gut-feeling [a deal won't get done]. David just fought John Ruiz on April 3 and wants to take a rest and wants more time to devote to his family. He is also more interested in making a f!ght with the older Klitschko brothers," Meyer said.

"A f!ght with Vitali could lead to a further unification against the winner of Wladimir and Alexander Povetkin. I don't think Haye and Klitschko will agree by May 17, the deadline set by the IBF to end negotiations."

The likely scenario would be good result for Sauerland Event because they promote both Haye and Povetkin - and as a result they would satisfy both of their f!ghters by getting each of them a good payday with a Klitschko brother.
