Treadmill: Incline vs Flat

how does running on the treadmill at an incline hit your legs differently then running at no incline?

and which would you recommend

always incline... running on a treadmill is bad for your kness, incline takes the pressure off and is more difficult...
how is running on a treadmill worse then running on pavement,
or are you comparing it to like a court or track?

anyways how much incline would you recommend if it matters

I just do flat...I honestly don't think it matters as much but incline will burn more calories and work your legs out even more.

Yea, that guys is full of it. I just think running in general is bad for your knees though, treadmill, pavement, or whatever. Your better off riding a bike

Running is bad for your joints plain and simple but its one of the best ways to burn calories. Some say to run on an incline because it helps reduce shin splints. If you do suffer serious pain from running on the street or treadmill i would think of getting some stability shoes or good cushioning like the Nike Peagus or Eqaulon or Asics 2120 or 2130 or 2140 which are great for runners who over pronate. And switch it up too, dont just run the street, or the treadmil, run on grass or sand or a track involve all surfaces it will give your joints a break from hard surfaces.

Run on an incline. Your whole goal on a treadmill is to make it as close to outside running as possible. If say you run a 7:00 min mile on the treadmill to your body the effort equals about a 7:30 mile on the road. Here's what an article I read a while said on the correlation btw incline and effort.

Treadmill Pace Flat 1% 2% 3%
5:00 5:21 506 453 441
6:00 6:26 608 552 537
7:00 7:30 709 650 633
8:00 8:34 811 749 729
9:00 9:39 912 848 825
10:00 10:43 1013 946 922
11:00 11:47 1115 1045 1018
12:00 12:52 1216 1144 1114

The 1,2,3% are the incline like g-zus said. And the numbers underneath them is the actual time it takes you to run a mile. So if you're running a 5 minute mile on the treadmill it's not a real 5:00 min mile.

I usually run on a 1.5% incline. Flat seems to hit a little more on the joints and burns less calories. More than 2.5% makes it hard to keep running for a long time.

As for treadmills being bad for your knees, more recent ones have good suspension systems that cushion impact nicely. The ones at my gym are pretty comfortable, forgot the brand though...I also run outside sometimes during summer. Right now it's 0 degrees F out there so i'll stick to the treadmill...

I do interval training on running machine.

So for 25 mins I run at 1.5 incline on interval periods of 9.0 and 13.0 and then for 5 mins I run on 9.0 incline so I just mix it up.

the thing is that running on pavement is bad for your knees it is called high impact work out, running on a treadmill inclined or not is considered med impact workout. things like the elipitical or swim are consider low impact work out
