After four seasons and one championship, Johnny Damon won't be returning to the New York Yankees unless he slashes his asking price.

"I'm not having any discussions on him," general manager Brian Cashman said, according to MLB.com. "His abilities exceed the money that I have."

Cashman told the Web site that his priority is finding a right-handed bat for the outfield.

Damon, a left-handed hitter, batted .282 with a career-high tying 24 home runs and 82 RBIs, but he is 36 years old.

He earned $13 million last season. After back and forth in negotiations yielded little, ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney reported that the Yankees offered Damon a one-year deal over the weekend. Now, they appear to be backing off.

"He's a valuable player that a lot of teams are talking to, I'm sure," Cashman said, according to MLB.com. "His abilities exceed my physical ability to keep my finances afloat."

The Yankees continuously lead the league in payroll, but there are indications that they aren't willing to go higher than their 2009 levels.

"I'll always try to get the budget pushed, but you're not always successful," Cashman said, according to the Web site. "The Steinbrenner family has been extremely generous for adding talent, but you can't do everything."
Priceless excuse on why NOT to sign a guy

It's a new season!! The Yankees have bought some great players this offseason and were real stickler by not going over that $200 mill mark for Damon. They're playing real small ball.

I don't want to join this argument because I don't agree with either side, the Yankees bought guys we could and probably should have (except AJ) to win last year.

But on the other side I don't see how the Sox did the same exact thing. Papi was signed as a nobody, Manny was here for 4 years from Cle, this was the making point of 04. In 07 we traded young talent for Beckett and he was the making point of the 07 run with the two mentioned. We didn't buy the biggest names all at once those two years, and some of these guys were traded for, so i'm confused on this point. Yes we spent a lot of money but it wasn't in the same fashion.

No matter what each team does they are rivals and are in it to win, nobody is going to say lets just be happy with a losing season. Both teams have gotten their a.ss kicked this decade with a high payroll and the reverse so this argument looks dumb from every angle.

This is a business, don't be mad at the owners that reinvest their money and be mad at the ones that pocket theirs. There is no salary cap, but there is shared revenue. Stop whining.

shared revenue has worked only to a certain extent, I agree it's not Steinbrenners fault that teams like the Pirates choose to suck every year and nod spend at all but $200+ million to buy a championship ring you want to act lke it's not tainted and it means as much as it meant to the phils 2 yeasr ago you're fooling yourself.

Adjust 250,000 in 1927 for inflation. It's not 250,000 anymore..nevermind that that total population of the U.S. in 1927 was about 120 million, where the current population is about 307 million...there might be a FEW more baseball fans out there buying tickets. Or how about the invention of god damn television and the revenues from that..and then add on the advertising revenues.

The point you just attempted to make was terrible and not thought out at all.

I'm pretty optimistic about Lackey.. But I don't care who spends on what, both Sox and Yankee fans know how much money was wasted and is wasted thinking like that. Can't wait for the season though

thinking like what??? The Yankees and Red Sox don't spend the same amount of money.... the Yankees are far and away the highest payroll in the league for chrissake.

And on another topic it was nice to see CC go bakc to the CC we all know here in Boston. Too much pressure on his fat a.ss the other night and now he got off to a horrible start. He's gonna hae an ERA around 4 this year mark my words.

I know Keith (A Boston fan) already said it but I will reiterate. The Yankees did not BUY anyone this offseason.

Traded for Granderson and Vazquez. Signed injury prone Nick Johnson, Marcus Thames and Randy Winn on the cheap, so who did we buy?

Truth be told, outstide of the offseason before 2009, the Yankees rarely "bought" anyone. Most of their new players came via trade. Since 2000 the biggest free-agents we had come to the team were:

Mike Mussina -2001
Jason Giambi-2002
Gary Sheffield-2004
Carl Pavano-2005

I could be missing some (I'm not counting Clemens second turn, he originally came to us in a trade first go round). Feel free to add any "big names" that I missed

I'm not going to obsess over every little signing they've made (even though you left out people and the guys you did name had ridiculous contracts as well). They already went out and bought the free agent market from last year for half a bill...but ur right the Yankees were quite frugal this offseason

they paid 20 million for Juicin Giambi so what are ut alking about? and I guess 30 million for arod doesn't count
