Former Tide QB Nick Fanuzzi lands at Rice
Nick Fanuzzi, one of the nation's top dual-threat quarterbacks from the Class of 2007, has enrolled at Rice to complete a swift transfer from Alabama. He has three years of eligibility left.

Fanuzzi signed with the Tide as the No. 20-rated quarterback out of Churchill (San Antonio, Texas) in 2007, but had fallen to No. 5 on the depth chart. The 6-foot-3, 201-pounder appeared in just one game as a freshman, the season-opener against Western Carolina.

"The young man wanted to come back home," Rice coach David Bailiff told the Houston Chronicle. "Geographically we were a place that was close. If you look at his transcript, academically this was a good fit. We're thrilled he's here."

Alabama offers Joe McKnight's brother......

Alabama was strongly in the running to pick up the services of USC star Joe McKnight two years ago, and the Tide coaching staff has already gotten an early start on his younger brother who is a star in his own right by extending 6-foot, 170-pound Jonathan McKnight an early written offer.

Unlike his brother, McKnight's future is likely on the defensive side of the ball.

"I got the offer in the mail at my house last week," said McKnight who plays defensive back and returns kicks for John Curtis High School. "We had to evacuate because of the hurricane and we just got back home Thursday but it was nice to get that first offer. It means a lot for Alabama to be the first one to offer me."

McKnight camped at Alabama's second football camp of the summer and impressed onlookers with his coverage skills.

"I loved my trip to Alabama," said McKnight. "I really got a chance to see what campus life is all about. Their coaching staff was really hands-on with the players, and Coach Saban is an expert coaching defensive backs. It was a great time all around.

"Alabama is one of my top schools right now. I also like Florida, Florida State and LSU. That would be my early top four."

Unlike his highly touted brother, McKnight's future is likely on the defensive side of the ball.

"My brother is an all-purpose player who can do a little bit of everything," said McKnight. "I am more defensive minded. I guess you can say I am more physical than he was when he was my age."

"I learned a lot from my brother as he went through the recruiting process and I am going to take it all the way to my signing day before I make a decision. I am going to take my time and take my visits."

McKnight is currently in wait-and-see mode for his squad's next game against East St. John, scheduled for this Friday but still up in the air due to Hurricane Gustav and now Hurricane Ike which could hit the U.S. later this week.

Biggest recruiting weekend of the year

I would not be surprised if we locked up commitments from Steven jaquez (sp?) and Montez Robinson on Sunday or the following week.. here's the story on Robinson coming to town this weekend:

Avon, Ind.--Auburn will have the chance to impress one of the nation’s top defensive end prospects this weekend when the Tigers take on LSU in a battle of Top 10 teams as speedy Montez Robinson takes an official visit to the Plains.

A 6-4, 237-pounder with serious wheels off the corner, Robinson is rated a four-star prospect and the number 10 defensive end in the country by Scout.com.

“I can’t wait," Robinson tells Inside the Auburn Tigers. "I’m excited about it. I hope they come out with a win, but I just want to see how it is during game days. I want to see how the players react if they win or lose.”

It won’t be Robinson’s first chance to see the Tigers this year. He watched Saturday night’s 3-2 victory over Mississippi State on TV from his home in Indiana. A player who loves good defense, Robinson says he couldn’t believe the game and the play of the Auburn defense.

“It was 3-2 and I watched the whole game,” Robinson says. “It was pretty good. They played hard, real hard. For them to just put up three points they had to play hard.”

Montez Robinson is considered one of the top prospects in the Midwest this season.

With offers from all over the country, Robinson has been a wanted man since running a blistering 4.43 second 40-yard dash at a Scout.com Combine earlier this past spring. Growing up in Alabama before moving to Indiana, Robinson says he’s always had an eye on the SEC. Combine that with Auburn’s aggressiveness in recruiting Robinson early and that adds up to the Tigers having a solid chance to sign the defensive end in February.

“Auburn is at the top,” Robinson says. “I have been talking about going ahead and committing to them this weekend. I was looking at Georgia and Alabama, but my first school in the SEC was Auburn. I told my coach I wanted to go there.

“They came up here to Indiana during the school year,” Robinson adds. “Georgia came up here last year with coach (Rodney) Garner, but they only came up here because they knew Auburn had offered. Alabama offered me right after Auburn offered me.”

This season Avon is 2-2 with Robinson leading the charge on the defensive side of the ball. Coming on strong over the summer with several camp visits to help him on his technique, Robinson notes that while he has gotten better there is still plenty to work on as he finishes out his senior year.

“I feel like my technique has been fine-tuned a little more,” he says. “I’m just working on my intensity. I’m just trying to keep a high motor.”

....Good to see a kid that can see through the bullsh*t during his recruitment year.. I mean his senior year of high school

Also got Jheranie Boyd coming ... Farms and B Smith supposed to come on unofficials, Shane Gordon and the 2 I mentioned earlier

With the Tide already off to a strong start to the class of 2009 and spots filling up fast, a need still exists for a pass-rushing specialist at defensive end.

Enter South Dade (Homestead, Fla.) four-star prospect Ed Stinson, a Florida State commitment who is interested in checking out a few other programs - including the Tide.

"Coach Bobby Williams called me last week and asked me if I was interested in Alabama. I told him I was. He asked if I wanted to visit and I said yes to that also. I told him I didn't know much about Alabama other than the obvious stuff and he said that visiting would answer all my questions," Stinson said. "Coach Williams told me that Alabama needs a rush end and they would like to use me like Jason Taylor. Coach Saban coached him when he was in the NFL. Rushing the quarterback is what I do best and the sooner I can get on the field the better."

While Stinson remains committed to the Seminoles, a few SEC schools have sparked his interest.

"I'm a soft commitment to FSU. I'm going to take some visits and see who I like the best and that's where I'll end up. Right now I don't know where that will be but I want to explore my options, take visits and then figure it out," Stinson said. "I'm definitely interested in Alabama and LSU. I don't know a lot about them but I want to learn more. I've seen them on television and think I could fit in well at either.

"I'm planning on taking some of my visits during the year. I haven't set up anything definite at this point but I will go to FSU, LSU and Alabama officially at some point."

Stinson's senior year has been slowed by injuries to this point, but it appears that the 6-foot-4, 227-pounder is back on track.

"This weekend was my first game. I was injured and missed the first game. I played well but I missed some plays that I should have made. I was too jacked up, too excited to be back on the field. But I settled down as the game went on," Stinson said. "I haven't set any goals for the season. I just want to be healthy and play hard and get better every week. I'm going to focus on my senior year right now."

Stinson is the 12th-ranked weakside defensive end nationally per Rivals.

Petey Smith Names New Leader Premium Story
Jamiel Smith

By Andrew Bone
Asst. Regional Manager
Posted Sep 18, 2008

Petey Smith, Scout.com four-star middle linebacker from Seffner-Armwood, (Fla.), has a new school on top of the leader board and has scheduled three official visits. He reports the latest news.

"Our season is going really good," said Petey Smith. "Right now we are 2-0. In our first game I had a couple of big hits, 10 tackles and a sack. The second game I had 11 tackles."

"This week we play at Brandon. They are not considered a powerhouse, but we have to look at every game as a big game. Anybody can win on any given weekend."

Smith reports the hard work in the off-season has been beneficial.

"The biggest thing I think I have improved is my weight," he explained. "I wasn’t the same playing speed last year as my 10th grade year. My quickness and agility are a lot better. My tackling and reading is good. I am reading much more."

Smith took an unofficial visit to Auburn for the Tigers' home opener against Louisiana-Monroe and will return to the Plains this weekend for the LSU game. His brother, Eric Smith, is a freshman running back for Auburn and in the starting rotation.

"The visit went real well," he stated. "It was the first game of the season. A lot of people were there. People were screaming my name. It was awesome. I like all their facilities and players. They have a real good team bond."

Smith scheduled an official visit Wednesday night and knows of other dates as well.

"I just got off the phone with Nick Saban," he said. "It was real good to talk to him. He was telling me a lot of stuff about their program and the defense. He talked about what they would expect of me in the 3-4 defense."

"He has won everywhere he has been. It is only a matter of time until they win a national championship. It would be great to play under someone with NFL experience. He has the upper hand there. He can get people to look at you. I am going to take an official visit to Alabama the weekend of the Iron Bowl."

"I believe I am going to visit Auburn for the Georgia game and Louisville on October 18. I will probably visit Tennessee as well."

"My dad's alma mater is Louisville. They have been good the last few years--starting to build the team back up. I like their defense.”

“I have a good relationship with coach [Stan] Drayton. He was the one recruiting me when he was at Florida. He is a down-to-earth person. Tennessee has a real stellar defense and one of the loudest stadiums in the country."

One school has picked up their recruitment of the four-star prospect, and a new leader has emerged as a result of their efforts.

"Right now I would say Alabama is recruiting me harder than anyone," Smith explained. "I would say they are my leader right now. I have been watching them play this year. I see myself fitting in their 3-4 defense. They have a huge nose guard [Terrence Cody] who could really help me out."

New names continue to surface on the Alabama 2009 recruiting board, and the newest name happens to be a one-time heavy Auburn lean whose brother plays on the plains. Hard-hitting middle linebacker Petey Smith, 6-foot, 230 pounds, appeared destined to follow his brother Eric Smith to the Tide's in-state rival.

After a recent push by Alabama, however, Auburn appears to have some competition.

"Alabama has come on real strong for me lately and I like what they have to say," said the Seffner-Armwood star. "They have been recruiting me for awhile but just recently have they come on pretty strong. I talked with Coach Saban yesterday and he just encouraged me to watch as many Alabama games as I can this fall and get a feel for what they do on defense.

"That is one of the main reasons I like Alabama right now. I see myself fitting into their scheme very well. I like the 3-4 defense and they want me in the middle controlling the action between the tackles. I also like the facilities and coaching staff a whole lot."

With the sudden interest in Alabama, has Auburn fallen off the board for Smith?

"Auburn is still very much in it for me," said Smith. "It isn't really that Auburn is slipping as much as it is I really like what Alabama has to say right now. You could say that Alabama is a little ahead of Auburn right now. They are my top two schools.

"My brother just told me to make the best decision for me. He isn't trying to pressure me or talk me into doing the same thing he did. What is good for him may not be good for me."

For now, Smith is concentrating on continuing a big senior season is which he has already piled up 22 tackles in two games.

"I will probably take an official visit to Alabama when they play Auburn in the Iron Bowl," said Smith. "I am not planning an early decision. It will definitely be after the season."

Smith holds offers from Tennessee, North Carolina, Alabama, Auburn, Ohio State, Clemson and Florida among others.

yeah miller is dumb as fu*king rocks, prep school looks like the main option for him.

i'm still hoping for a minor miracle tho, that kid is too fu*king good to leave south florida
Me too, dude needs to be a cane. The sad thing is dude just dont care, if his grades were somewhat decent (borderline mediocre) he would be a cane right now. Florida is recruiting him hard right now but unless a miracle happens (and if that happens he will be a cane) he would not be able to get in.

Even without Miller, the 09 class will be real nice, the only spot I am worried about is OL.

The 2010 class will be epic!
