He may have an on again, off again relationship with the mic, retiring from music more times than fans can keep up with, but Jay-Z has always been a business, man.

According to the New York Post's Page 6 the former Def Jam president is out to capitalize on his label, shopping the Carter Music Group around for a home, but he may have over shot this one.

The music mogul is asking "way too much," for the imprint, an insider told Page 6. "He wants a label to give him $100 million for the Carter Music Group and provide for overhead, development and digital investment. It's crazy. He wants the labels to basically be his venture capital fund - but unlike a venture cap, they won't get 50 percent. This is not the '90s anymore."

As SOHH previously reported, Jay-Z stepped down from his post at Def Jam over a money dispute in December of last year when he and Island Def Jam chief L.A. Reid couldn't come to a salary agreement.

When news of Jay starting his own label first hit, it was said that it would be under Warner Music Group. According to Def Jam, the company was never interested in housing the Carter Music Group anyway.

"Starting a record label from scratch is very difficult. If Warner Music wants to do it, better them than us," a Def Jam exec said last month.

But Jay's new venture remains without a home.

As SOHH previously reported, Hov may also be in talks with Apple Inc. There has been ongoing speculation on a possible union between the hip-hop mogul and the tech giant for the purpose of a new label.

i agree but just b/c someone turns you down doesnt mean you stop trying

not always, contrary to popular belief it is possible to get something for nothing
ex: Diddy giving the LOX their publishing back
them boys had to put up a f!ght to get that sh*t form diddy .. they put time money blood sweat and tears in gettin that sh*t legal battles payin for radio time just to air diddy out all them diss cuts the frustration they put up with the money they lost by not having there publishing rights so you cant say they got it back for free yea it was no money exchanged in the transaction itself but money was putfourth to get it

whoever said that American Gangster went platinum with no promotion is fu*king retarded......

The fu*kING MOVIE was promoting the ALBUM as well...had Jay all up on the Soundtrack...

All everybody heard for like 2 months before the fu*kin movie was how Jay was inspired by it n made an album...

then the movie dropped and all u heard about EVERYWHERE was his album...

by the time the album did drop, the hype was fu*king REDICULOUS...

like more hype than the fu*king BLACK ALBUM had when it dropped...

then people heard the single, and a lot decided to wait till the album leaked...then when it leaked, most people decided it was garbage, minus maybe 4-5 songs...they thru those songs on their ipod or cd...and didnt purchase the album.......only the HARDCORE Jay fans bought the album...

it just so happens Jay has enough HARDCORE fans to go platinum every damn time...

A digital record label w/ Apple is going to change the face of the entire Music Industry. I hope he moves forward w/ that idea, bc CURRENT records sales show they we are in a Digital Era...can't do the same sh*t you did in the 90's.
Yeah, if he gets with Apple and they come to an agreement and get to work and do what they are capable of, those two are going to make serious money and change how music is sold. People don't go into the stores and buy CDs, they download

correction. people aren't buying into that bs they labeling as hiphop no more. they just download that. r&b is doin' just fine. why would anybody continue to support an artist who only talks about how much money they got? would you(the artist) have that much money if they didn't support you(cd's, concerts, etc)?the consumer has finally figured out the hustle....hustling them.

at these broke idiots saying a guy with over a half billion dollars was a failure as an exec. You do realize that he's been an exec since Reasonable Doubt right? You don't make it to over 1/2 billion from just being a rapper. Anyway you dumb fu*ks know nothing about business. You got idiots on here saying "why don't he front his own $100 million?" That's gotta be the dumbest sh*t I've heard on here.

Tierra Marie Flop. Need I say more. Mental Note: Just because Jay-Z appears as a feature on a single doesnt necessarily mean it will equate to record sales.
Rihanna An interesting replacement who has proven to be mediocre in record sales but a darling to the camera.
Young Jeezy Jay-Z did not sign Young Jeezy to Def Jam, credit for this megastar belongs to the former helms at Def Jam, Lyor Cohen and Kevin Liles.
Ne-Yo Ne-Yo was already signed to Def Jam records prior to Jay-Z becoming president.
Megan Rochelle Although she is incredibly talented, Jay-Z has proved that his ability to develop a female R&B pop artist who can actually sing is not strong.
Chrisette Michelle Another fabulously talented vocalist whose timing was impeccably off given the fact that the buzz she obtained through appearing on Jay-Zs album and her release of her solo album were not in sync.
Nas Although this was the biggest news to hit Hip-Hop at the moment, Nas signing to Def Jam was brilliant on Jay-Zs part, however, spending 20 million to market yourself, and only 2 million dollars on marketing the most anticipated comeback album next to your own doesnt fair well.
you need to get your facts str8 b/c Jay didnt sign Nas. and i wish people stop saying that.

LA reid apporached Nas about a joint venture.
