Is there a difference between reggae and dancehall? For example, I was chillin' with a friend of mine and Gimme the light by Sean Paul was on the radio. Him, being the idiot he is was like 'Yo I love reggae." Tis not reggae, that was dancehall. Of course an argument ensued. Around here, anyone who hears a Jamaican accent on any some, a.ssume its a reggae track or a reggae remix. To me, reggae is slower, more contentiously-, politically, driven music. I.E. Just wonderin' if anyone else saw it like that. I'm quick to correct someone that tells me 'I love that reggae song, Dutty Wine.'. That's dancehall sweetheart.

What cha think?

Very true. I'm Trini, but my dad played a lotta Marley, Cliff, Tosh and them growin up and I knew that to be reggae.
Whenever we went to carnivals and whatnot, they would play the faster stuff to dance to like soca and dancehall.

THe way i see it Its all reggae - dancehall is just a branch off that same tree like how theres different styles of hip hop. You still have your traditional style reggae with the one drop style beats then you got the more harder stuff.
