2008 NFL Offseason Moves Thread

These are exclusive moves and not rumors. Rumors may be posted in main forums for discussion.

Panthers Release LB Dan Morgan

[pic - click to view]

Panthers released LB Dan Morgan and OG Mike Wahle.
Morgan said all the right things since the season ended, but Carolina didn't need him anymore with Jon Beason entrenched in the middle. If Morgan is healthy enough to pass a physical, he could be a nice addition for a team willing to give him a shot. He's currently recovering from Achilles surgery.

Also cut was starting OG Mike Wahle.

Jaguar's Greg Jones Becomes Highest Paid FB In NFL History

[pic - click to view]

JAGS MAKE JONES HIGHEST-PAID FULLBACK IN LEAGUE HISTORY
Posted by Mike Florio on February 13, 2008, 11:09 a.m.

[pic - click to view]

The Jacksonville Jaguars have announced that a new contract has been reached with fullback Greg Jones. An NFLPA source tells us that it’s a five-year, $17.4 million deal, which includes up to $3 million incentives. (We’ve been unable to reach agent Drew Rosenhaus to confirm these numbers.)

Per the source, Jones will receive $4.5 million in bonus money, in the form of a $2.5 million signing bonus, a $1.5 million roster bonus due on the third day of the 2008 league year, and a $500,000 roster bonus due in 2009.

In each year of the deal, Jones gets a per-game roster bonus worth a total of $50,000, and a workout bonus in the amount of $50,000.

The base salary in year one is $525,000. In 2009, it goes to $2.48 million. For 2010, the base salary is $3 million. In 2011, it’s $3.1 million. For 2012, it moves to $3.4 million.

The base deal averages $3.4 million over five years, $400,000 per year more than the six-year, $18 million deal signed last year by Ovie Mughelli, who moved from the Ravens to the Falcons.

Jones would have been eligible to reach free agency on February 29.

Kansas City Chiefs Claim OT Anthony Alabi Off Waivers

Alabi Claimed Off Waivers
Posted Feb. 13th, 2008

[pic - click to view]

Once considered by many to be a starting left tackle of the Miami Dolphins, Anthony Alabi was claimed today off of waivers by the Kansas City Chiefs. Alabi was considered to be the #1 tackle coming out of training camp for the past two seasons, however plagued by injuries and an inconsistency in coaching, Alabi never made his debut. He showed promise in back up roles through out the season.

Raiders Extend RB Fargas' Contract 3-Years

[pic - click to view]

Raiders re-signed RB Justin Fargas.

[pic - click to view]

NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports the deal is for three years and $12 million, including $6 million guaranteed.
Fargas, 28, gained 1009 yards on 222 carries (4.5 YPC) and scored four TDs in 2007. He's not a threat in the passing game and often runs too hard for his own good, but fits Oakland's zone system. Fargas now enters 2008 as the heavy favorite to start over Michael Bush.

Dolphins Release 7-Time Pro Bowler LB Zach Thomas

Dolphins Release Thomas
Posted February 14th, 2008

[pic - click to view]

The Miami Dolphins today terminated the contract of linebacker Zach Thomas.

Thomas, a fifth-round draft choice of the team in 1996, was selected to seven Pro Bowls in his 12 seasons, the most-ever by a Dolphins defensive player. He ranks fourth in club annals in starts and fifth in games played, as he opened all 168 regular season contests in which he appeared as a Dolphin. He also led the team in tackles in 10 of his 12 seasons, and reached the 100-tackle plateau in all but one season. His career totals consist of 1,866 tackles, 18.5 sacks, 17 interceptions (4 for touchdowns), 13 forced fumbles and seven fumble recoveries.

LB Channing Crowder is a likely candidate to replace Thomas.

Seahawks Claim OG Mike Wahle

[pic - click to view]

Mike Wahle, a free-agent guard most recently with the Carolina Panthers, has signed a multi-year contract with the Seahawks, the team confirmed today.

Wahle, 30, is a 10-year veteran and two-time Pro Bowler who was released mainly for salary-cap reasons on Monday by the Panthers. He traveled to Seattle to meet with the Seahawks on Tuesday, had his visit that presumably included a physical on Wednesday, and signed.

Giants Extend Punter Feagle's Contract 2-Years

Feagles signs two-year deal, stays with Super Bowl champs

[pic - click to view]

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Punter Jeff Feagles signed a two-year contract with the NFL champion New York Giants on Tuesday, a little more than a week after becoming the oldest player to play in a Super Bowl.

Feagles, who turns 42 next month, represented himself in negotiations with a.ssistant general manager Kevin Abrams.

Feagles declined to say how much money he would earn, but he made $1 million last year in the final year of a five-year deal.

"I'm just very, very happy to have a chance to come back and play for the defending world champions," Feagles said in a telephone interview with The a.ssociated Press. "It feels great."

Falcons Release QB Byron Leftwich & TE Alge Crumpler

Falcons released Byron Leftwich.

[pic - click to view]

He was due $3.65 million, and the Falcons weren't willing to pay it after Leftwich's poor showing next season. The former top-ten pick's stock has taken a drastic hit the last year, but he can help an NFL team with a full offseason to prepare - if can ever stay healthy. Since he'll come cheaply, don't be surprised if teams like Miami, Minnesota, and Baltimore show interest.

Falcons Released TE Alge Crumpler

[pic - click to view]

Falcons released seven players Friday, including four-time Pro Bowl TE Alge Crumpler.
Atlanta saves $1.3 million by cutting Crumpler, but his prorated signing bonuses will be on the books for two more years. Crumpler, 30, immediately becomes the top tight end on the free agent market. He'd be worthwhile pickup for a team like the Vikings, Bills, Dolphins, Seahawks, or Buccaneers.

Also Released were LT Wayne Gandy, DT Rod Coleman, CB Lewis Sanders, WR Jamin Elliott & LB Marcus Wilkins.

Bears Release WR Muhammad After 3 Seasons

Chicago Bears Released Veteran WR Muhammad

[pic - click to view]

The Chicago Bears released veteran wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad on Monday, NFL Network's Adam Schefter is reporting.

Muhammed finished the 2007 season, his third with the Bears and 12th in the NFL, with 40 catches for 570 yards and three touchdowns. He played his first nine years with the Carolina Panthers.

The Bears also signed defensive end Alex Brown to a two-year contract extension on Monday. Brown had two years left on his existing contract.
Bears Released Starting RT Fred Miller

[pic - click to view]

Miller was a solid pass protector during Chicago's 2006 Super Bowl run, but his play fell off considerably last season. At 35, he won't be viewed as a starter by other teams and may retire. John St. Clair is next on the depth chart at right tackle, but the Bears will look to upgrade in free agency and the draft.

Niners Waive Veteran LB Derek Smith

Niners waive Derek Smith

[pic - click to view]

The 49ers waived veteran linebacker Derek Smith today, the team announced.

As reported last week, the 49ers felt they could no longer pay Smith his full scheduled salary for 2008 because his role had evolved into that of a one-down player. The club wanted him to retire or take a dramatic pay cut.

He was scheduled to earn $3.28 million in base salary. With the move, the 49ers create an additional $3.28 million in salary-cap space.

"Decisions like this are a difficult part of a great business," 49ers coach Mike Nolan said in a statement. "Derek has been an important member of the 49ers, and you don't make these kinds of decisions without battling the emotion that is natural when you are dealing with a player that has done so much for your organization.

"We made the decision because we have quality linebackers who we think are the future of the 49ers. Derek was a model professional during his seven seasons with the 49ers, and he influenced a lot of the younger players with his work ethic."

Smith, 33, was one of the best free-agent pickups in club history. His seasons with the 49ers were exemplary, as he conducted himself in a professional manner and was a positive influence in the locker room.

Vikings released FS Dwight Smith.

Vikings Release Starting, Yet Troubled Safety Dwight Smith

[pic - click to view]

February 20th, 2008 – 3:32 PM by Judd Zulgad

The Vikings released Dwight Smith this afternoon. Smith, 29, was a starter at free safety, but had off-the-field issues and occasional disagreements with the team’s coaches.

“We were just going in a different direction,” coach Brad Childress said. “I don’t want to cast any aspersions.”

Childress said releasing Smith at this time would give him time to prepare for free agency, which begins on Feb. 29.

Vikings safeties Tank Williams and Mike Doss are set to become unrestricted free agents, making the safety spot a very vulnerable one for the team.

Packers Cut Former Starter TE Franks

[pic - click to view]

Packers Release Veteran TE Bubba Franks

[pic - click to view]

Green Bay -- The Packers just made official the news that Corey Williams had been slapped with the franchise tag and they also announced the release of tight end Bubba Franks.

The Franks move isn't totally surprising given his drop-off in play and recent injury problems, but there was no reason financially that they had to make the move. Franks' salary cap number jumped from $2.4 million last year to $4.5 million this year, but the Packers have around $18 million in salary cap money after the move to franchise Williams.

Franks is also due a $500,000 roster bonus, which the Packers obviously didn't want to pay. His $3 million base salary would not have come due until the season began.
