Niners optimistic Smith will return in 2009

The 49ers want quarterback Alex Smith to return to the club in 2009. Smith said he wants to return. Therefore, the only thing that will keep that from happening is the 49ers' ability to work out a contract agreement with Smith's agent, Tom Condon.

After numerous conversations over the past month with people in and around the 49ers, including Smith, all signs point to the 49ers making a concerted effort to retain Smith for at least another season. Smith is signed for two more years, but his contract calls for him to earn unrealistic base salaries of $9.625 million in 2009 and $15.05 million in 2010.

Smith and his agent know that no team in the league is going to pay him that kind of money. The 49ers will want to slash Smith's salary, to be sure. But the 49ers still have every reason to want to give Smith a chance to prove whether he is capable of being a productive NFL starter. Smith is young enough to turn his career around. He turns 25 in May.

The organization is optimistic Smith, the No. 1 overall pick of the 2005 draft, will remain with the club and build on the improvements he showed during his only full season as the starter.

As a rookie in 2005, Smith completed 50.9 percent of his passes with one touchdown and 11 interceptions. As a second-year player, Smith took every snap. He completed 58.1 percent with 16 touchdowns and 16 interceptions in 2006.

Smith started the first four games of the 2007 season but sustained a separated shoulder on the third play of the fourth game. He made an ill-advised attempt to return to action. He has not played in a regular-season game since Nov. 12, 2007, against the Seahawks.

Smith did not play in 2008 after sustained a small fracture to his right shoulder before the season opener. By that time, Smith had lost the starting job to J.T. O'Sullivan. Smith was placed on injured reserve on Sept. 10.

Smith has been throwing lightly the past couple weeks as part of his rehab, according to the 49ers. He appears to be on schedule to take part in full offseason activities.

Prior to the season, 49ers GM Scot McCloughan said Smith would not return to the 49ers if Smith did not head into 2009 as the starter. What McCloughan should have said is that Smith would not return to the 49ers under his current contract if he did not prove himself as the team's starter. McCloughan is solidly in Smith's corner. Mike Nolan might have had "the trigger" and selected Smith with the top pick, but McCloughan wanted Smith, too.

There is some uncertainty about the 49ers' QB situation. Coach Mike Singletary has declined to name Shaun Hill as the starter for 2009. He said he does not want to make that commitment because he is unsure if the 49ers will acquire a starting-caliber quarterback in the offseason - via free agency or the draft.

It seems unlikely Smith would win a quarterback competition against Hill, who has a 7-3 record as a starter. But if Smith remains on the team, he would ultimately get a chance to prove himself.

Raye is new offensive coordinator

By MATT MAIOCCO
THE PRESS DEMOCRAT

Published: Wednesday, January 28, 2009 at 7:59 p.m.
Last Modified: Wednesday, January 28, 2009 at 11:19 p.m.

Jimmy Raye, an NFL a.ssistant for the past 32 seasons, was hired Wednesday evening as the 49ers’ offensive coordinator, according to reports.
External Links:

* Matt's 49ers blog

Raye, 62, earlier in the day became the eighth candidate to interview with 49ers coach Mike Singletary, who fired Mike Martz on Dec. 30. Scott Linehan turned down the 49ers’ offer Jan. 18 to replace Mike Martz as offensive coordinator. Linehan later accepted a position with the Detroit Lions.

It is not known if others declined offers. On Tuesday, Baltimore quarterbacks coach Hue Jackson had his second interview with the club. But Raye emerged with the job, the NFL Network reported.

The 49ers also hired former Baltimore, Atlanta and San Diego quarterbacks coach Mike Johnson, Sports Illustrated reported. Johnson did not coach in the NFL last season.

Coincidentally, Raye’s first NFL job was with the 49ers — before the Bill Walsh era began. Raye coached 49ers receivers under Ken Meyer in 1977.

Raye has served as offensive coordinator for 12 seasons with six organizations: Raiders (2004-05), Washington (2001), Kansas City (1998-2000), Los Angeles Rams (1983-84, 2001), New England (1990) and Tampa Bay (1985-86).

He worked the past three seasons as New York Jets running backs coach, but was not going to be retained on new coach Rex Ryan’s staff.

49ers release Keith Lewis, Banta-Cain

The 49ers today cut ties with safety Keith Lewis and linebacker Tully Banta-Cain. Lewis, who played at Valley High School in Sacramento, originally was a sixth-round pick out of Oregon in 2004. He started nine games in 2006 but mostly was considered a special teams standout who specialized in blocked punts.

Banta-Cain, meanwhile, was a free-agent acquisition in 2007. He did not provide the pass-rush ability the 49ers expected that season and he had to agree to a sizeable pay cut to remain with San Francisco in 2008. Both Lewis and Banta-Cain play positions the 49ers hope to upgrade this offseason. The team also made a waiver claim for former Buccaneers and Browns quarterback Bruce Gradkowski, but he was awarded instead to the Raiders who finished 2008 with a worse record.

STATE OF THE FRANCHISE
ON 49ERS.COM

its about a hour and a half and ima go with it and take notes

-Jed York, new president of the team, first to speak, address getting back to playing football in January, creating 49ers hall of fame where fans vote for who is in, addresses stadium concerns ie difficulty leaving the stadium, says main goal is to get back into playoffs

-next to speak andy dolich, pays tribute to joe starkey the old announcer, (by the way dolich is a comedian lol), says their job is to create revenue and have to best possible talent, talks about making the candlestick experience better, new adjustments to stadium and customer service

-scott mccloughan, says the team going in right direction, team is gonna have losses this offseason but there is going to be more gains, talking about how singletary is so crucial to the success, offense = simple and to the point, free agency - not gonna build thru free agency but we will add pieces, important to have the draft success, top 6-7 in cap space but not gonna spend it all on two guys...more resignings, 4-6 hopeful additions in free agency and 9 thru the draft, wants to get tradition back, says that OL, S, WR, QB are the main positions in free agency looking for...not in the draft, go for the best player in the draft not for position, alex smith having positive talks but gonna do whats best for the franchise

-mike singletary easily the best introduction, talks about the niner history, this dude is so passionate and is making me cry talking about how he has a vision rather than a dream...says he didnt come to motivate lol yeah right, lists important qualities of winners 1. work ethic 2. respect, challenges the fans to be there from the beginning of this new regime and trust them

All four answering questions: jed york says we have to have coownership of the stadium and cant finance it by ourselves, singletary wants a qb competition and thats why he wont say shaun hill is the starter because he wants the best player there, coach thinks manny lawson will be unleashed this year, seems like jed york really wants to move to santa clara, dolich said we are sevral years from a new stadium, lol guy asks how we can turn moral victories into real victories and singletary paused then said "i know you dont know me very well...im not a moral victory guy!" lol quote of the night, coach wants to play hard a.ss defense and run smash mouth football and that we are gonna get leads play defense and hold those leads, fan questioned raye's hiring as off. coord, singletary said that it seemed martz would do things but not be excited about them but raye really believes in what singletary believes and matches what direction he goes in, mccloughan said prolly not gonna get a big name qb and shot down any idea of matt cassel, gonna go after more role players, minor upgrades now while they decide if new stadium or renovation like soldier field and lambeau, coach says we are gonna be a defense that is physical with an F, mccloughan says singletary keeps sh*t simple and will make drafting without mistakes easier, "should we change our uniforms? stay tuned," dont be surprised if you see championship colors back in the future

ended with a video..."DONT TELL ME SHOW ME"

Niners uniform change is coming this season

The 49ers today announced that there will, in fact, be a uniform change for the 2009 season.

The concept of throwback-style uniforms has been discussed for several seasons. The new design will be on display at the 49ers draft day event on April 25, the club announced.

Club chief operating officer Andy Dolich foreshadowed today's announcement at the state-of-the-franchise event last night in San Mateo when he said, "Stay tuned," after being asked if the 49ers might go back to the team's classic uniform design that was changed in 1996.

Hard to believe 49ers can stand in way of Warner-Cardinals union

At least this 49ers quarterback scenario makes a heck of a lot more sense than the Michael Vick speculation of a couple weeks ago.

But is there really any chance the 49ers will sign free-agent quarterback Kurt Warner away from the Cardinals?

It would be a popular move (I'm pretty sure) among the fan base if the 49ers could attract Warner. But, obviously, it seems highly unlikely.

There are two questions that need to be asked: 1) Can the 49ers afford Warner? The answer is yes. The 49ers would have plenty of cap room to enable them a big-money free-agent signing; 2) Can the Cardinals afford to lose Warner? The answer is no.

That's why I see almost no possible way the Cardinals botch this contract negotiation so bad that Warner feels compelled to leave town.

Warner will turn 38 before the start of next season. He just led the Cardinals to the Super Bowl, he is beloved in Arizona and he has a great group of wideouts on an offense that is passing-oriented.

Why would he want to start over with a new team . . . for an offense that wants to be a power-running team . . . and with a largely unproven set of wide receivers?

After talking to several people on this subject in the past 90 minutes after ESPN.com reported the story, the thoughts range from the 49ers having a "legitimate shot" to the whole issue being "a lot of fluff" and the 49ers are not all that interested.

In either case, I think we'll know quickly. Warner is getting antsy. He wants something done quickly. I have to believe the Cardinals and Warner will come to some kind of resolution within the next couple days.

^^^brandon jones....i don't like this signing. He is fast and a good blocker but that's it.We don'thave a qb to throw the deep ball to him so that takes his speed away...the only plus is he can help our run game.If we can sign TE curtis from dallas we can really do some damage in the run game with davis, norris, curtis, and jones blocking.Would make up for a suck a.ss line but our pass game would still be bad

kinda lost a little respect for kurt...as much as he and his agent said he wouldn't go visit with another team just to up the offer and that's not his moral it's obvious that's what he was doin. Why visit the niner the biggest division rival and you know we offered him what he wanted

Roman given permission to seek trade

The 49ers envision safety Mark Roman as a backup in 2009, so they have given him permission to seek a trade, his agent confirmed.

"That's why coach (Mike) Singletary is going to be such a great coach," said agent Albert Elias, who represents Roman. "He is so honest with his players, and that's all Mark could ask for. Coach Singletary told him he thought his role was going to be as a safety on nickel and dime situations. So he'd play all third downs, but he probably wouldn't be a starter."

The nugget was first reported by The Sporting News.

The 49ers said they were not going to release Roman, but they extended the courtesy of allowing him to seek a trade, Elias said. Roman is in the final year of his contract and is scheduled to earn $900,000 in base salary in 2009.

The 49ers have penciled in Dashon Goldson to be the starting free safety next season. Roman, a nine-year veteran, has started 48 consecutive games since arriving with the 49ers as a free agent in the summer of 2006.

"Mark wants to stay in San Francisco, but he also wants to be a starter," Elias said. "If he has to be in a limited role, he'll do that. We appreciate the 49ers giving Mark an opportunity to find a starting job."

The 49ers gave Roman's agent permission Tuesday to seek a trade. The process has just started. If he can't find a trade, Roman is expected to return to the 49ers as a backup.

Niners add free-agent defensive end Evans

The 49ers have agreed to terms with free-agent defensive end Demetric Evans, formerly of the Washington Redskins. It is a two-year deal worth $3.8 million.

Evans visited the 49ers on Tuesday. He returned home to the East Coast to weigh the 49ers' offer against returning to the Redskins.

Evans (6-foot-4, 287 pounds) started 11 games for the Redskins last season at left defensive end. He is known for being solid against the run and can get some push with his pass rush. Evans had a career-high 3.5 sacks last season. Evans, who has seven years of NFL experience, turns 30 in September.

Of course, the 49ers did not get Evans for his pass-rush skills. In the team's 3-4 scheme, the pass rush is expected to come from the outside linebackers.

The 49ers did not make much of an attempt to re-sign defensive lineman Ronald Fields, who signed a two-year deal with the Broncos on Monday. Evans gives the 49ers six defensive linemen who figure to make the 49ers' 53-man roster.

At the scouting combine, 49ers general manager Scot McCloughan said the draft is thin at defensive line. So the 49ers are not expecting to get much - if any - defensive-line help in the draft.

Teams that play a 3-4 defense, such as the 49ers, generally keep six defensive linemen on their final roster. With today's signing, the 49ers might already have their six men: Evans, Justin Smith, Isaac Sopoaga, Aubrayo Franklin, Kentwan Balmer and Ray McDonald.

* * *

Evans becomes the sixth player the 49ers have added since the opening of the free-agent signing period on Thursday night. They re-signed linebacker Takeo Spikes and return specialist Allen Rossum, in addition to adding receiver Brandon Jones (Titans), fullback Moran Norris (Lions) and quarterback Damon Huard (Chiefs) to their roster.

Marvel Smith to pay 49ers a visit

The 49ers currently have a hole at right tackle, and they're wondering whether Marvel Smith is the man to fill it. The long-time Steelers tackle is scheduled to meet with the 49ers tomorrow, a team official confirmed today. Smith is from the Bay Area having played high school ball at Skyline High School in Oakland. He went to Arizona State and was a second-round pick by the Steelers in the 2000 draft. Smith has two Super Bowl rings and he went to the Pro Bowl in 2004.

As the 2008 season ended, the 49ers identified tackle as one of the positions they hoped to improve this offseason. So, far, however, they haven't added any new tackles to their ranks. Jonas Jennings, who began 2008 as the starting right tackle, will be released later this offseason. Barry Sims, 34, and Adam Snyder, 27, also started games at right tackle, but neither is viewed as the future starter. The team also could turn to the draft for help. However, both of the tackles that are most likely to be available at pick No. 10 - Alabama's Andre Smith and Ole Miss's Michael Oher - come with question marks.

At 6-5, 325 pounds, Marvel Smith is just the kind of big body the 49ers want on the right side and he has experience at both right and left tackle. But he's not perfect. Smith will be 31 when the season begins and he has missed 15 games due to injury in the last two seasons. Smith had lower back surgery in December 2007. He returned from that procedure this past season but re-injured his back on Oct. 5 and was later placed on injured reserve. In other words, Smith's physical tomorrow at Stanford Hospital will be tremendously important.

49ers talks with Marvel Smith heat up

Talks are heating up between the 49ers and free-agent offensive tackle Marvel Smith, as both sides are getting more excited about the possibilities of a contract agreement.

Smith visited the 49ers last week and underwent a medical examination. Smith (6-foot-5, 321 pounds) has played in just 17 games the past two seasons because of a lower-back problem. The examination did not reveal any surprises, according to a source close to the situation.

The 49ers want Smith, and it appears Smith wants to return to the Bay Area to play for the 49eres. Stay tuned, something could happen in the next couple days. He would be penciled in as the team's starting right tackle, a spot at which he started his first three NFL seasons with the Steelers. Smith was selected to the AFC Pro Bowl team at left tackle in 2005.

Joe Staley, a two-year vet coming off his first season at left tackle, looks pretty solid. But the 49ers need help at right tackles. The club started three different players there in 2008: Jonas Jennings, Barry Sims and Adam Snyder. Jennings has been told he does not fit into the team's future, while, the 49ers believe Sims and Snyder are better-suited as backups.

Smith, who turns 31 during training camp, is an Oakland native who attended Skyline High. He was the No. 38 overall pick in the 2000 draft from Arizona State.

* * *

The 49ers signed guard Tony Wragge to a one-year contract extension through the 2010 season. It is the second time in seven months Wragge has signed a one-year extension. He received a $175,000 signing bonus in July to extend his contract through 2009. Now, the club has added another year.

Wragge gives the 49ers some good insurance. Wragge started the first 10 games of the season at right guard - and did a commendable job -- before rookie Chilo Rachal supplanted him. Wragge could find himself back in the team's starting lineup in the future, depending what happens with David Baas, whose current contract is set to expire after the upcoming season.
