Niners win the stats column, but suffer bad, bad loss

OK, I'm looking at the stat sheet, and I'm wondering to myself, "Is this the same game I watched today?"

The 49ers showed some glimpse of their new-and-improved offense in the first half. In the second half, all we saw was the Cardinals prolong one drive after another.

What about the 49ers' second-half offense? Hmm, I don't recall.

The 49ers had just one possession through the first 28 minutes of the second half of their 23-13 loss to the Cardinals. (Click on the link to read my game story.)

I really don't know what to make of this game:

--The 49ers outgained the Cardinals, 291-285, despite running 28 fewer plays. The 49ers averaged 6.6 yards per play. The Cardinals just 4.4 yards.

--The Cardinals converted just 5 of 16 third downs (31 percent). It's difficult to rip on the defensive effort after looking at those stats. (But the Cardinals did convert both of their meaningful fourth-down attempts.)

--Heck, the 49ers turned the ball over FIVE times, and they still lost by only 10 points. But five turnovers!? That's horrendous.

--The 49ers' four turnovers on offense resulted in just ZERO points. But Takeo Spikes' muffed kickoff was cashed in for a touchdown.

--The Cardinals won the time-of-possession battle 37:05 to 22:55. That's amazing, considering the 49ers held a 1:06 advantage at the end of the first half.

--In watching the game, it seemed as if the 49ers' run defense didn't do the job. But the Cardinals averaged 2.8 yards per rushing attempt. The Cardinals outgained the 49ers by 1 yard on the ground despite carrying 19 more times.

--J.T. O'Sullivan had a passer rating of 80.2. That's pretty good. But, certainly, his two fumbles have to be factored into his performance, as well.

--Bottom line: This was a game the 49ers really needed to win. They start out 0-1, and things do not get a whole lot easier through the first nine games of the season. The stats - other than those grisly turnover numbers - point to a reasonable performance. But there is no silver lining on this game for the 49ers. This was a bad loss.

--Hopefully, I'll have a few more opinions after re-watching the game.

* * *

Coach Mike Nolan didn't tip his hand, but he said he and GM Scot McCloughan will bring in a new No. 3 QB to take the spot of backup Alex Smith, who appears to be lost for the season with a small fracture in his throwing shoulder. They've discussed veterans and young players whom they can develop. When I hear some names, I'll toss them out there.

Cant find it...

This loss has me hopeful though...it was very disappointing because it was very winnable but just gotta cut back on the turnovers and we'll be fine...

Looking at the next 4 games:

Up next Seahawks dont look tough at all with all their injuries and getting handled by the Bills but the game is at their house...

Detroit Lions looked pretty weak against the Falcons...

Saints should be tough...

And then the New England game is suddenly not that scary of a game since Brady is out...

49ers sign Martin

September 10, 2008

The 49ers have signed ex-Rams quarterback Jamie Martin, an indication that Alex Smith will go on injured reserve. Martin's agent Tom Mills said he has just faxed the necessary paperwork and the deal is complete.

Martin, 38, appears to be the only quarterback the 49ers targeted. He has a long history with Mike Martz, including two stints with Rams when Martz was the head coach and one with the Redskins when Martz was the team's quarterbacks coach.

I feel the exact same way, for about 3 quarters we held the Boldin and Fitz in check so it should be much to ask to shut down the Seattle back-ups receiver's ... But I am a little worried about the Hawks D which isn't hurt right now, & that stadium isn't one of the easiest places to play in. I guess what sucks the most about losing to the Cards is we need to get as many wins early before we have to play the Cowboys, Giants, and Eagles(most of these are on the road).... But honestly what pisses me off more than any thing about last Sunday is me getting sun burned... Not quite D'Angelo Hall burned....

On the NFL: Give the 49ers' and Raiders' owners an earful

Bay Area NFL fans, you are angry, fed up, frustrated. Don't apologize. You have earned the right.

Now it's time to do something about it.

If you are sincerely disgusted with the state of your once-mighty franchise, be it the 49ers or the Raiders, then take action. No more blaming the beat writers and columnists for stating hard truths that you've known in your hearts for years. No more pleas to fire the owners on Internet message boards.

That is not going to happen. They are not selling.

Do something about it. Make the owners, whose teams opened the 2008 season with maddeningly predictable results, explain themselves to you.

Demand that they conduct town-hall meetings across the Bay Area and tell you, the ticket-buying, jersey-wearing fans, why your once-proud favorite franchise is an NFL embarrassment.

Demand that John, Jed and Denise York get microphones, take hard questions and give honest answers about their football product, a 49ers team filled with high draft picks and big-money free agents who consistently fail to deliver.

You don't want to hear Jed York telling you yet again why the 49ers need $136 million in redevelopment funding from Santa Clara to build a $900 million stadium. That won't fix this.

Demand that Al Davis - yes, even though he is 79 and frail - stand before you. Not Jim Otto or Amy Trask. Make Al Davis explain why he has committed nearly $200 million of the Raiders' future this season to unproductive free-agent signings. Why does he misjudge talent and character, year after year?

Davis must explain why he refuses to let his head coaches coach. Why he has almost entirely disbanded his personnel department, starting with the departures of Bruce Allen and Michael Lombardi, until now. Do you really think Mark Jackson makes a football decision?

Think about it: If Ted Kennedy, who is dealing with brain cancer, can muster the strength and conviction to stand before the Democratic National Convention and deliver a rousing speech, why can't these Bay Area owners stand before their fans?

Five seasons have passed since either the 49ers or the Raiders were contenders. Neither franchise has sniffed .500 since 2002, when both won their divisions.

Remember when we thought it was all coaches Steve Mariucci's and Bill Callahan's fault? Could we have been that naive?

The 49ers and Raiders share this: In the past decade, they have proved to be colossal organizational failures.

You can blame the coaches, or the players. But look where it starts: It's ownership's fault.

The York family failed to install a competent front office, after alienating Bill Walsh and Bill McPherson and ignoring advice on how to run the franchise from such NFL personnel experts as Ron Wolf and such wise former 49ers players as Steve Young and Ronnie Lott.

Instead, the Yorks turned over a football dynasty to a carnival barker, Terry Donahue, and a Stanford MBA with zero football background, Paraag Marathe. When it became obvious that Donahue had to go, the Yorks made an even more catastrophic mistake.

They turned over their football operation to one man, Mike Nolan, who had not been an NFL head coach and had zero front-office experience. When Nolan showed he was in over his head, the Yorks refused to fire him as head coach. Then they promoted Nolan's right-hand man and a college scout, Scot McCloughan, to general manager.

You saw the results of that expertise Sunday: No draft pick from this year cracked the 49ers' starting lineup in a 23-13 loss to Arizona.

On a good team, you expect this - draft picks are for reloading, tools for the future. On a bad team, they are for rebuilding. A team that has won 25 games in the past five seasons does not have the luxury of allowing a first-round defensive end, Kentwan Balmer, to waste away on the bench. Or watching the No. 1 pick in 2005, quarterback Alex Smith, ruined by mismanagement and injury.

As for the Raiders, you saw all you needed to see Monday night when Denver ran up 41 points on them. You saw coach Lane Kiffin - who has reminded us relentlessly on the record that he had little input on coaching or personnel decisions this past offseason - watch helplessly while his offensive line crumbled and his defense failed to blitz. Think that was his call?

Look upstairs for the answers, Raiders fans. To the owner's booth.

Candlestick Park and the Coliseum were once Houses of Dread. Now they are crumbling relics that amplify the decay of the franchises they house.

The dysfunction must stop. Sell your tickets, burn your jersey - it's time you tell the owners that you have had enough.

More important: Demand that they listen.

Smith still waiting

Alex Smith and the 49ers are still waiting to find out whether he will need more surgery on his right shoulder. D3

Official: Alex Smith placed on IR

Quarterback Alex Smith has been placed on injured reserve with a fractured right shoulder, officially ending his season, 49ers coach Mike Nolan announced this morning.

The 49ers signed Jamie Martin to take Smith's spot on the team's 53-man roster.

Smith finished last season on injured reserve to have surgery to repair a separated shoulder. He appeared to be healthy through training camp, but he experienced intense pain his his shoulder after throwing a deep pass in practice Friday.

The 49ers and Smith originally described the fracture as a non-contact injury. But Smith said Monday that it is highly unlikely this kind of fracture to the coracoid process could have occurred through the act of throwing passes.

Smith did not suit up for Sunday's season-opener against the Cardinals. Nolan said he had no other details, such as whether Smith was going to have surgery.

Smith will receive all of his $2.3 million base salary for this season while on injured reserve. In four seasons with the team, he will have made $31.325 million as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2005 draft.

* * *
Martin and Mike Martz worked together when Martz was an offensive a.ssistant with the Rams in 1993 and quarterbacks coach in 1994. The two also were together in Washington in 1997 when Martz was quarterbacks coach with the Redskins. Martin and Martz were reunited with St. Louis in 2001 when Martz was the head coach of the Rams.

* * *

When I asked Nolan about comments from GM Scot McCloughan last week, in which he said Smith would not return in '09 if he were not the proven No. 1 quarterback, Nolan said, "I'm not going to answer any hypothetical questions about where it's going to be in the future. We'll cross that bridge when we get there," Nolan said. "My focus right now is on Seattle."

* * *

Nolan said the team would sign a defensive lineman to the practice squad to take the spot vacated when Louis Holmes was released.

Jennings, Spencer out for this week's game
The 49ers expect to be without RT Jonas Jennings (shoulder) and CB Shawntae Spencer for Sunday's game with the Lions, coach Mike Nolan said.

Veteran Barry Sims is slated to start in place of Jennings. Nolan declined to disclose the extent or nature of Jennings' injury. He said he did not believe Jennings would require surgery.

When asked whom will be the No. 3 corner with Spencer out, Nolan answered, "I'd rather not divulge that from a game-plan standpoint."

S Dashon Goldson (knee) and CB Donald Strickland (knee) are expected to play this week. Goldson left the Seattle game in the first half with an injury, while Strickland did not suit up.

* * *

Nolan said the Lions offer a similar challenge with their wideouts that the 49ers faced in Week 1 vs. the Cardinals. He said both Calvin Johnson and Roy Williams are "explosive and competitive."

The 49ers did a good job against Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald in the opener, holding them to a combined 11 catches for 113 yards.

But Nolan was also careful not to ignore the contributions of Shaun McDonald and Mike Furrey, two other receivers Mike Martz speaks highly of.

Other things Nolan had to say:

--The 49ers' offensive line did OK, but they can do better against the Seahawks. He said he didn't want to put all eight sacks on the line. "It's not where it belongs," Nolan said.

--Nolan said the hits on QB J.T. O'Sullivan does not bother him as long as the sacks are gentle. He said most of the sacks were "gentle," but O'Sullivan did absorb a couple big hits. One was at the end of a running play, in which S Brian Russell hit JTO as he was sliding.

"That's uncalled for, there," Nolan said.

--When asked if Goldson's hit on Seattle WR Logan Payne (Payne is out for the season with a torn knee ligament) was a dirty play, Nolan defended Goldson.

"No, he was breaking on the ball," Nolan said. He added that if Goldson had tried to hit Payne high, he might have missed him altogether. "He had zero malicious intent."

--Nolan didn't exactly impart great insight when asked what the 49ers' run defense can do better. His answer: "tackle."

--When asked about the defensive line play against the run, Nolan said, "I think they're doing all right. We can play better."

--Nolan said Manny Lawson's return from last year's torn knee ligament had nothing to do with the fact that he did not play one defensive snap against Seattle. Nolan maintained that the five-DB scheme gave the 49ers the best chance to be successful against the 'Hawks.
