Sean Taylor News Updates/4 suspects detained for Taylor's murder

the other thread is for condolences

this thread will we to give news updates as they are known since this investigation has turned into murder.

NFL Player's Shooting 'Not Random,' Family Says

MIAMI -- An attorney, speaking on behalf of the family of Washington Redskins safety and former University of Miami star Sean Taylor, says the fatal shooting was not random violence.

"There are too many coincidences," said attorney Richard Sharpstein. "It's clear this house was targeted."

Sharpstein said Taylor, his girlfriend and Taylor's 18-month-old daughter were in the bedroom of Taylor's home on Old Cutler Road when the NFL player heard noises in the living room.
Sharpstein said Taylor went to investigate the noises and was carrying a machete that he keeps in the bedroom. The intruder kicked in the door and then shot twice, hitting Taylor in the leg, the attorney said. Taylor lost a significant amount of blood because the bullet hit the 24-year-old's femoral artery, Sharpstein said.

Miami-Dade police went to Taylor's home at 18050 Old Cutler Road in Palmetto Bay after receiving a call from a woman around 1:30 a.m. Investigators later identified the woman as Taylor's girlfriend, Jackie Garcia. Garcia is the niece of actor Andy Garcia.

Taylor was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center around 2 a.m., according to police.

Monday's break-in was at least the second for Taylor in less than two weeks. Taylor's home was ransacked and items were stolen Nov. 17, Sharpstein said. A kitchen knife was left on the bed, according to the police report.

Police did not give a description of the intruder because they said Garcia was in bed at the time of the shooting and didn't see the person.

Sharpstein said the telephone lines to the phone were either cut or the phone was intentionally shut off, since Garcia had to use her cell phone to call 911, but police will not confirm the information, Local 10's Rad Berky reported.

"Homicide detectives are going to look at every lead," said Miami-Dade Police Detective Alvaro Zabaleta.

In the hours after Taylor's death, police continued to search his home for evidence. Taylor's father, Pedro, removed some personal effects from his son's home, including suit bags. Miami-Dade police detectives removed door frames and also took his personal computer.

Taylor's death

Family members had been faced with grim news about his prognosis until doctors began speaking with Taylor.

"The doctor asked him to move his eyes and he responded, and he also asked him to squeeze his hands and he responded," said Pedro Taylor.

But Sharpstein said he was told Taylor never regained consciousness after being transported to the hospital and that he wasn't sure how he had squeezed the nurse's hand.

"Maybe he was trying to say goodbye or something," Sharpstein said.

By Monday night, several Redskins teammates had flown to Miami and gathered at the hospital, among them former UM players Clinton Portis and Santana Moss. Team owner Dan Snyder was also seen speaking with Taylor's relatives.

Family Issues Statement

Taylor's family issued a statement after his death Tuesday.

"It is with deep regret that a young man had to come to his end so soon," said Pedro Taylor, who is the police chief of Florida City.

Sharpstein said Pedro Taylor called him around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday to tell him the news of Sean Taylor's death.

In the statement released Tuesday, Pedro Taylor said many of his son's fans "loved him because (of) the way he played football. Many of his opponents feared him the way he approached the game. Others misunderstood him, many appreciated him and his family loved him. I can only hope and pray that Sean's life was not in vain, that it might touch others in a special way."

It feels like ESPN has an inside idea as to whats going on

I'm getting the vibe of something illegal.. somebody felt stiffed/owed/etc. and was letting Taylor know it was serious, going as far to break-in his house and lay hints, Taylor knew it was serious and was spending a lot more time at the house to protect his wife and child, the k!ller knew when he was home and went to shoot him, I'm guessing it wasn't an intentional k!ll because of the location, but he hit an artery..

Miami PD seems to be slipping on a lot of sh*t lately, first that sheriff or deputy or whoever important got shot, now this...

Just so people know when they originally broke into the house they tried to open the safe and the knife they found was a kitchen knife from I believe Taylors kitchen. Maybe they used it to pry open a draw. It wasn't like it was some big a.ss knife left on the bed. (Which makes me think that wasn't even a message as people are making it out to be.)

Also from the reports I read/heard.. He heard a noise in his living room got up with his knife and shut and tried to lock the bedroom door.. Someone kicked it/or slammed it open and shot twice. Since his arrest in 05 it was illegal for him to have a gun

Taylor's father to k!ller: `Turn yourself in'
Posted on Tue, Nov. 27, 2007
Digg del.icio.us AIM reprint print email
BY REBECCA DELLAGLORIA AND OSCAR CORRAL

Dressed in black and clutching her 18-month-old baby, Jackie Garcia paid a tearful visit Tuesday to the family of her slain boyfriend, football star Sean Taylor.

Garcia, 24, pulled up to Taylor's father's house in the Fairway Estates subdivision near Richmond Heights around 3 p.m. in a black Mercedes.

With her brown hair held in a ponytail with a black band, Garcia carried her baby girl, also named Jackie, into the house. She was accompanied by her sister, and another man who appeared to be her father. The baby, wearing a pink bow in her hair and pink sneakers, was asleep in her mother's arms.

She declined to speak to reporters, leaving the task to Taylor's father, Pedro Taylor.

He described the relationship between Garcia and his son as close, and ``a bond that can't be broken.''

He then talked about his son's death. ``Whatever took place between He and God at the time, He [God] had it all in control. I'm at peace with God, and God, he makes no mistakes.''

He said he was not angry at the person who k!lled his son. ``You know who you are if you did it, turn yourself in. Vengeance is not mine, it's God's. He holds that in his hands.''

At one point during her hour and a half visit at Taylor's house, Garcia and her sister came out with tears in their eyes to greet well-wishers. She left when Taylor spoke to the media, her baby bundled in a black blanket.

Taylor said his son had grasped fatherhood ''with opens arms,'' and it was part of his evolution from childhood to adulthood. Asked if Sean ever disappointed him, Taylor said he always tried to guide his son.

''We all have high expectations, but we all understand that everyone has to travel the road and there are going to be some mishaps,'' he said. ``But guess what? That's what we're here for to steer them in the right direction.''

He said he didn't have details about the shooting, but said it may be a case where his son startled a robber. He spoke about his son in the present tense.

''Sean's not a bad guy,'' Taylor said. ``Everybody thinks Sean has enemies. Sean doesn't have enemies. Sean is an isolated person who keeps to himself.''

Family will receive $600K insurance benefit
Pasquarelli

Updated: November 27, 2007

The family of slain Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor will receive a number of benefits, including a $600,000 life insurance policy, under terms of the league's collective bargaining agreement with its players.

But according to NFL senior vice president of public relations Greg Aiello, the league has "no specific salary-cap rules" governing a player's death. And the NFL is still determining, Aiello said in an e-mail, the exact ramifications that Taylor's passing early Tuesday morning will have on his contract and on the Redskins' future salary cap.

Aiello said that Taylor's sister was named as the beneficiary of his life insurance policy.

Among the several other benefits available to his family: dependent medical insurance through the first game of 2008 through the "active player policy," and then five further years of coverage under the "continuing veteran policy"; $100,000 in a health reimbursement account for dependent health care after the expiration of the "continued veteran" coverage; $103,560 in a 401(k) plan; and a widow/children's death benefit that pays $9,000 per month for the first 48 months, then $3,600 per month until the child is 19 years old (or 23 years old if in college).

Taylor, 24, was not married, but he and his girlfriend had a 1-year-old daughter.

As is believed to have been the case with the Denver Broncos in the wake of the murder of cornerback Darrent Williams on Jan. 1, the Redskins are not likely to realize much salary cap relief this season or in future years.

Taylor had a base salary of $1.125 million for 2007 and essentially had collected 12 weeks' worth of that, or $794,117. Washington will not be charged for the balance against its cap. His base salaries for the remaining years of the contract, which was signed when he was a first-round pick in the 2004 draft, were $865,000 (2008), $1.105 million (2009) and $1.345 million (2010). There were offseason workout bonuses of $150,000 each in 2008-09, and $39,715 for 2010.

The Redskins technically are not liable for those base salaries or for the workout bonuses.

Aiello said that the remaining prorated amounts from signing or option bonuses already paid to Taylor will "accelerate" into Washington's salary cap for 2008. According to NFL Players a.ssociation documents, the prorated amounts for future seasons are $1.175 million each for 2008-09 and $128,000 for 2010. That would bring Taylor's salary-cap charge for 2008 to about $2.48 million.

Taylor's scheduled salary-cap charge for 2008 had been $2.19 million. So it appears that the recalculated salary-cap charge for 2008, because of the "accelerated" prorations, could be slightly higher than the initial one.

League officials still are determining what, if any, bonuses or incentives Taylor might have qualified for this season.

As the fifth overall player chosen in 2004, and one of only nine safeties to have been selected among the top 10 players in any draft over the past 20 years, Taylor signed a seven-year contract with a base value of about $18 million and a maximum worth of $40 million. He received an initial signing bonus of $7.2 million and then subsequent option bonuses of $4.475 million in 2005 and $640,000 in 2006.

Taylor and his girlfriend were startled awake by noises in his sprawling home in Palmetto Bay. Taylor told Garcia to get under the covers while he grabbed a machete that he kept for protection underneath his bed, Sharpstein said.

As she cuddled with their infant, Garcia did not hear any voices but said ''she heard a lot of noise that she related to more than one person. There seemed to be a lot of commotion.'' Sharpstein said the door swung open and Taylor was shot down -- the gunman never stepped into the room.

The armed intruder fired at least one shot. Taylor tumbled back into the bedroom, fatally wounded in the groin, Sharpstein said.

The gunman fled immediately after firing.

''Nothing was stolen. They shot at him and fled,'' Sharpstein said.

He said Garcia called 911 on a cellphone. Sharpstein had said Monday that the house phone line had been cut, but on Tuesday clarified it, saying the house phone was not working, but the lines had not been cut.

Taylor was not supposed to be home. He had come back to Palmetto Bay, while the Redskins played in Tampa, to see an orthopedic surgeon for a second opinion on his injured knee, Sharpstein said.

''My instincts tell me this was not a murder or a hit. It was certainly not professionally done in that two random shots were fired. One his leg. The other hit the wall,'' Sharpstein said.

Spoke to Richard Sharpstein, Sean's lawyer and de facto family spokesperson at this point. He cleared a few things up.
Sean did have an alarm system on his home, Sharpstein said, but it was not engaged that night. Sharpstein said he spoke to Jackle, Sean's girlfriend, about that evening and she said that here sister had been staying with them and coming and going from the house, so Sharpstein said that may have been why the alarm was not on at that time. Sharpstein said that Jackie had difficulty getting a dial tone and struggled to make the 911 call then "scurried to get her cellphone," and made the call from that.
However, Sharpstein said he could not say for certain whether the intruders had actually cut the phone lines at the house, as some have reported, and Sharpstein said the police were investigating that aspect of the case.
Sharpstein said that at the time the person or persons entered the house, making a noise in the living room that startled Sean and his wife, Sean's baby was in her crib. However, as they heard the clutter Sean reached for the machete under his bed - he is prohibited from having a firearm from his prior felony weapons charge - his girlfriend grabbed the baby from the crib and put her in bed with her (I believe Jackie was attempting to shield her from whatever was to come, but my last conversation with Richard was cut short and I could not get that 100 percent verified).
Jackie, Sean and the baby were the only three people in the house at the time of the murder. Sharpstein said the intruder/intruders kicked in the door, immediately fired two shots into the bedroom - one of which struck Sean, ultimately k!lling him - the retreated without ever entering the bedroom.
