Nov 10 - Albumbase Is Down; RIAA/FBI Raid a Possibility

After posting about Albumbase, a kluged-together P2P service that is currently offline, I received an email from a reader claiming that the service is ripe for an FBI raid:

"Your entry about Albumbase has only scratched the surface... it used to be owned by someone in England. IFPI [International Federation of the Phonographic Industry] raided that guy's house and found out the info of the new owner, in Seattle. Now, thru the RIAA, the FBI is on it."

Update: An FBI spokesperson responded, "I can't find anything to indicate that your rumor is anything more than a rumor," so any pressure on Tatto and/or the hosting company they use for Albumbase is most likely coming from the RIAA, not the FBI.

A SiteMedia forum discussion shows that Albumbase's creator tried to sell the service for a minimum bid of $5,000 in early 2005. The site is now owned by the Seattle/Massachusetts-based Tatto, Inc., as shown by its user agreement (now offline; cached version here).
Jonathan Lamy, communications director for the RIAA, would neither confirm nor deny the Listening Post reader's account. Tatto didn't respond to an email, and the phone number listed on its website leads to a bogus destination at the Boston University Medical Center.
Update: The original Albumbase developer tells me via email that he doesn't know why the site is down, and that he hasn't spoken to Tatto's CEO Lin Miao in over a year. However, he also wrote, "in my opinion, when a company which turns over $25m a year can't keep their servers online, it only suggests one thing."
Tatto was recently named one of BusinessWeek's Best Enterpreneurs Under 25. If US agents really are raiding their offices, BusinessWeek might want to revise its selection of finalists.

Then again, it seems unlikely that the FBI would raid an award-winning company; the labels will probably sue Tatto instead, through the RIAA, or otherwise force them to shut down, a.ssuming the authorities really are circling in. But the FBI has raided locations a.ssociated with file sharing before. In 2004, federal agents raided the homes of five people who each ran hubs on of the Neomodus Direct Connect file sharing network.
I just emailed Tatto co-founder Lin Miao at his "Chairman Maio" address, and will post an update if I hear anything further about this. For now, the site is down [although it was up again for a brief period yesterday], and Tatto isn't talking.

Update: I've contacted the Seattle police, the Seattle FBI department, the IFPI, the RIAA, and the BPI (the IP address of Albumbase's webserver puts it in Great Britain) to try to figure out what exactly is going on here.
Another Update: Earlier today, I traced Albumbase's IP address to Great Britain, but when I checked just now, it mapped to the Philippines. Hmmm....

If anything, just Itsbx.com which is ran by Beatbox Ent. in Herndon, VA, which uses Network Solutions, LLC as a service which is in Ft.McMurray, Alberta, Canada. Don't know about them taking the whole Bx down, I hope not.

It's all possible. But ain't it ironic that hip-hop needs the FBI to protect it.
