TARANTINO wanted worse end for BRUCE LEE, BRAD PITT and f*ght choreographer objected.

When it comes to “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” one scene that is proving to be most controversial is the f*ght between Bruce Lee (Mike Moh) and Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt). Bruce Lee’s daughter and protégé have already spoken out against the film, condemning Quentin Tarantino for his portrayal of the martial arts and acting legend. In an interview with HuffPo, “Hollywood” stunt coordinator Robert Alonzo reveals Tarantino originally wrote a much longer version of the Bruce Lee f*ght scene.

In the film, Bruce Lee challenges Cliff to a three-round f*ght on the set of “The Green Hornet” after Cliff insults him by laughing when he says his fists have been registered as lethal weapons. Lee quickly wins the first round by knocking Cliff to the ground, then Cliff wins round two by launching Lee into the side of a car. Just before the two men can engage in the final round, a “Green Hornet” stunt coordinator played by Zoë Bell arrives on set to yell at the two men.

Per HuffPo, Tarantino wrote the Bruce-Cliff f*ght scene through round three and it ended with Bruce definitely losing to Cliff. Alonzo said the f*ght originally ended with Cliff making a “cheap-shot move” that puts Bruce on his butt. The scene as written rubbed both Alonzo and Pitt the wrong way, as the f*ght’s intention was to only show “the level at which Cliff was [operating]” and not to flat out depict Bruce as weaker.

“I know that Brad had expressed his concerns, and we all had concerns about Bruce losing,” Alonzo said. “Especially for me, as someone who has looked up to Bruce Lee as an icon, not only in the martial-arts realm, but in the way he approached philosophy and life, to see your idol be beaten is very disheartening. It really pulled at certain emotional strings that can incite a little anger and frustration as to how he’s portrayed.”

Alonzo admitted he had a “difficult time choreographing a f*ght where [Bruce Lee] lost.” The stunt coordinator said even Pitt vocalized his objection to the extended f*ght. “Everyone involved was like, ‘How is this going to go over?’ Brad was very much against it,” Alonzo said. “He was like, ‘It’s Bruce Lee, man!’”

Alonzo and Pitt’s pushback led Tarantino to revise the sequence, which is when the idea came to have stunt coordinators on the “Green Hornet” set interrupt the f*ght before it could go into a third round. Mike Moh previously told Birth. Movies. death. that the original f*ght scene “conflicted” him because Bruce Lee is a personal hero. Moh stressed that Tarantino reveres Bruce Lee and reminded viewers that the scene’s purpose is only to show Cliff’s strength and not to diminish Lee’s skill.

“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” is now playing in theaters nationwide.

It's obviously meaningful to his family and other fans. His daughter was offended and hurt enough to speak out so it probably would've been a serious issue to the man himself if he was still here. I feel like a huge Bruce Lee fan would understand that.

Tarantino treated him like a joke. I thought it was pretty disrespectful.

and I say that without even being a huge bruce lee fan.

The way I look at the scene is it is Tarantino putting his Id on display. In the movie, Brad Pitt's character is a representation of the "old" Hollywood getting pushed out by the new generation.

So, Pitt's character has a flashback to his previous meeting with Bruce Lee. In Pitt's character's POV, Bruce came off as arrogant and c*cky. That is one of the reasons they even f*ght. Again, this is Cliff Booth's perspective of how things went down.

So, Tarantino is using Lee to represent a new kind of action star that is coming into Hollywood to replace Booth. Booth resents that fact and has a bad memory of his interaction with Bruce. But, also sees after he thinks about again, that he can see why he was an a**hole in the situation.

Tarantino could have used a lot of different examples beside Bruce Lee. Jim Brown, Fred Williamson and other Black actors were also getting their feet into Hollywood at that time. The audience may have been left wondering who is Jim Brown and Fred Williamson. Everyone knows Bruce Lee.

Could you imagine the controversy of Brad Pitt's character going toe to toe with some Blaxploitation legends. Article after article about Tarantino trying to make Hammer and Truck Turner look like some pussies.

I may be putting more on the symbolism of the scene than even Tarantino did when he thought it up. That is why I am saying he subconsciously made Booth as equal to Bruce to satisfy a fetish for the Hollywood guys of a time period that he admire.

But, we are talking about a movie where
[spoiler - click to view]

There's a lot of untruths spread throughout the movie. It is similar to Inglorious Bastards and Hitler dying in a movie theater. Django is some other fantasy island sh*t.

I don't need the synopsis I already know what the whole movie is about and have already heard everything you've said about it maybe a dozen times now, but nothing about the mostly fictional story and characters really justifies portraying an actual real person in it that way.

None of that changes that Tarantino still took a real life person (Lee) who took his words and martial arts very seriously and turned him and those very things he's known for into a punchline and made him look like an arrogant clown. Like you said, Tarantino would've never done that to a black icon because he knew he wouldn't have gotten away with it as easy.

Then he basically admitted that it was based on his own personal REAL LIFE view of lee and tried to say he actually WAS like that and DID say those things.

Based on what ? Rumors and unsubstantiated claims ? Like the Ali quote he stood behind but the biographer came out and said was wrong ?

and how can we compare Sharon Tate's fate being changed from negative to positive to Tarantino turning Bruce Lee into a joke ? You really don't see the difference in those two things ?

The surprising thing is that Tarantino has cried and shown sensitivity over WAY smaller things when it comes to himself and what people have "done" to him.

I’m really surprised at Tarantino. As much as it seemed that he was a fan of Asian cinema and his films being heavily influenced by the genre that he would seemingly go to such lengths to disrespect a straight up legend like the great Bruce Lee.

He could've easily used Chuck Norris if that's the case.

Or even just created a character to get whooped.

But to make cliff out to be someone who can casually beat Bruce Lee, yet have his hands full with a few untrained crazed teenagers is laughable at best.

This is by far QT's worst movie

I grew up watching Brice Lee movies and it's not a Tarantino movie I don't like. That being said, Bruce Lee got done dirty in the movie.

Maybe Tarantino was trying to show us how Asian Americans in the 60s would get treated by Hollywood in movies with damn near an all White cast? Either way I can't see Tarantino portraying Elvis, Steve McQueen, or John Wayne in the same way he did Lee.

He usually rewrites history to take out the tyrannical or evil doers who didn't really get dealt with.
